Readers’ Advisory Committee AUGUST 2020 Staff Picks Digital and Print Edition Go to www.lib.de.us to find out how! FICTION SEVEN LIES BY ELIZABETH KAY (PICKED BY SP) Growing up, Jane and Marnie shared everything. They knew the other’s deepest secrets. But when Marnie falls in love, things begin to change. Because Jane has a secret: she loathes Marnie’s wealthy, priggish husband. So when Marnie asks if she likes him, Jane tells her first lie. After all, even best friends keep some things to themselves. If she had been honest, then perhaps her best friend’s husband might still be alive today… For, of course, it’s not the last lie. In fact, it’s only the beginning… Seven Lies is Jane’s confession of the truth—her truth. Compelling, sophisticated, chilling, it’s a seductive, hypnotic page-turner about the tangled, toxic friendships between women, the dark underbelly of obsession and what we stand to lose in the name of love. (352 pgs) THE SILENCE BY SUSAN ALLOTT (PICKED BY SLS) It is 1997, and Isla Green is awakened by a call in the middle of the night: her father phoning from Sydney. Thirty years ago, in the summer of 1967, the Green's next-door neighbor Mandy disappeared. At the time, it was thought she fled a broken marriage and gone to start a new life; but now Mandy's family is trying to reconnect, and there is no trace of her. Isla's father Joe was allegedly the last person to see her alive, and now he's under suspicion of murder.

A CLUSTER OF PRECIOUS MEMORIES A bud the Gardener gave us, A cluster of precious memories A pure and lovely child. Sprayed with a million tears He gave it to our keeping Wishing God had spared you If only for a few more years. To cherish undefiled; You left a special memory And just as it was opening And a sorrow too great to hold, To the glory of the day, To us who loved and lost you Down came the Heavenly Father Your memory will never grow old. Thanks for the years we had, And took our bud away. Thanks for the memories we shared. We only prayed that when you left us That you knew how much we cared. 1 2 AFTERGLOW A Heart of Gold I’d like the memory of me A heart of gold stopped beating to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow Working hands at rest of smiles when life is done. God broke our hearts to prove to us I’d like to leave an echo He only takes the best whispering softly down the ways, Leaves and flowers may wither Of happy times and laughing times The golden sun may set and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve But the hearts that loved you dearly to dry before too long, Are the ones that won’t forget. And cherish those very special memories to which I belong. 4 3 ALL IS WELL A LIFE – WELL LIVED Death is nothing at all, I have only slipped away into the next room.

  • Theroad for Safer Senior Drivers
PAVING the ROAD for Safer Senior Drivers Letter From the Governor Fellow Delawarean, We want you safely driving as long as possible. That’s why our Senior Driving Task Force, a great group of partners of state and private agencies, worked together and designed this guide. As the number of older drivers across the United States increases, Delaware boasts the fastest growing older population in the country. Studies tell us that experienced older drivers are less likely to speed or drink-and-drive and more likely to wear safety belts, but also are more likely to be hurt in a crash. This guide provides helpful information and some steps you can take to ensure you are comfortable and in control behind the wheel. We want to keep you safe and mobile for as long as possible on Delaware’s roads – and all roads. Delaware does more for senior drivers and this is one part of our effort to pave the road for you. • Drama Recommended Monologues
Bachelor of Creative Arts (Drama) Recommended Monologues 1 AUDITION PIECES – FEMALE THREE SISTERS by Anton Chekhov IRINA: Tell me, why is it I’m so happy today? Just as if I were sailing along in a boat with big white sails, and above me the wide, blue sky and in the sky great white birds floating around? You know, when I woke up this morning, and after I’d got up and washed, I suddenly felt as if everything in the world had become clear to me, and I knew the way I ought to live. I know it all now, my dear Ivan Romanych. Man must work by the sweat of his brow whatever his class, and that should make up the whole meaning and purpose of his life and happiness and contentment. Oh, how good it must be to be a workman, getting up with the sun and breaking stones by the roadside – or a shepherd – or a school-master teaching the children – or an engine-driver on the railway. Good Heavens! It’s better to be a mere ox or horse, and work, than the sort of young woman who wakes up at twelve, and drinks her coffee in bed, and then takes two hours dressing…How dreadful! You know how you long for a cool drink in hot weather? Well, that’s the way I long for work. And if I don’t get up early from now on and really work, you can refuse to be friends with me any more, Ivan Romanych. 2 HONOUR BY JOANNA MURRAY-SMITH SOPHIE: I wish—I wish I was more… Like you.

  • Q:How Did You Get Involved with Music? How Did It First Start for You?
Q:How did you get involved with music? How did it first start for you? A:Usually like anyone else, I listened to music on the radio. After some time I found some stuff that I liked most and that was around 1983..85, when producers just started to make special 12 inch mixes of normal radio play version of a song. So I thought that’s quite interesting. Later in the ‘80s, some bands were coming up with special, different sounds, like S-Express, Bomb The Bass, Inner City and stuff like that. This was stuff that I started with. After one or two years more, around 1990 I started buying some underground "club" records, but that was when the party scene over here first started. I went to some of these parties and the clubs and I tried to find out what kind of music they were playing, because the music was very different from what you heard in the daytime. I tried to find the records, it took some time, but finally I was able to find them and after a few years time, I started DJing with this "backstock". Q: How did you start producing? A: First I was a record collector for some years, then I thought `there are many common things in a lot of these records... ´. So they must have mostly similar equipment. I was interested more the backgrounds, trying to get some of this equipment. But at the time in ’93 or ’94 it was very difficult to get, even in Germany because it was totally sold out early ‘80s stuff, like the Roland machines, and analog synths, and the people who owned it didn’t want to sell it.

Sociology Study, December 2015, Vol. 5, No. 12, 920‐930 D doi: 10.17265/2159‐5526/2015.12.003 DAVID PUBLISHING Simple but Dominant: How to Reshine Depeche Mode on Album Covers After 80’s Cinla Sekera Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze the album covers of English band Depeche Mode after 80’s according to the principles of graphic design. Established in 1980, the musical style of the band was turned from synth‐pop to new wave, from new wave to electronic, dance, and alternative‐rock in decades, but their message stayed as it was: A non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. As a graphic design product, album covers are pre‐print design solutions of two dimensional surfaces. Graphic design, as a design field, has its own elements and principles. Visual elements and typography are the two components which should unite with the help of the six main principles which are: unity/harmony; balance; hierarchy; scale/proportion; dominance/emphasis; and similarity and contrast. All album covers of Depeche Mode after 80’s were designed in a simple but dominant way in order to form a unique style. On every album cover, there are huge color, size, tone, and location contrasts which concluded in simple domination; domination of a non‐hypocritical, humanist, and decent manner against what is wrong and in love sincerely. Keywords Graphic design, album cover, design principles, dominance, Depeche Mode Design is the formal and functional features graphic design are line, shape, color, value, texture, determination process, made before the production of and space.
