„MEHMED-PAŠA SOKOLOVIĆ () AND THE SOKOLOVIĆ FAMILY THROUGHOUT HISTORY“

Sarajevo, October 14-16 2016

Oriental Institute in Sarajevo, University of Sarajevo

On the occassion of the 510th anniversary of the Sokollu Mehmed Pasha's birth, the Oriental Institute in Sarajevo at the University of Sarajevo hosts an International academic conference on the theme of ''Mehmed-paša Sokolović (Sokollu Mehmed Pasha) and the Sokolović family throughout history'', which will take place in Sarajevo on the 14-16th October 2016.

Mehmed Pasha, one of the most important grand of the , as well as several other members of this Bosnian family, greatly contributed to the civil and political life in both Bosnia and, more generally, in the Ottoman domains in 16th and 17th centuries. The Sokolović family occupies a prominent place in the collective memory of the Balkan nations, and traces of their activities are still extant.

These are likely to shed valuable light on their careers, as well as on their private lives.

In an effort to reconstruct the life of Sokollu Mehmed Pasha in his capacity as Grand , as well as the details of his private life, this conference welcomes papers on the themes of Mehmed Pasha as a statesman and a diplomat; his relationship with three ; the structure of his household and the structure and establishment of his family network and its webs of patronage. In fulfilment of the ambitions of Mehmed Pasha, and with the additional aim of contributing to the development of the Ottoman Empire, the Sokolović family acted in a coordinated manner to enhance their collective power. They functioned as viziers, seraskers, beylerbeys, sanjakbeys, diplomats, and also as
