Ryan Associate Professor of Spanish Linguistics Department of Hispanic Studies University of Northern Colorado USA Abstract In the literature on gender systems, anaphoric pronouns are commonly given the proverbial backseat to nouns and even nominal modifiers such as adjectives; however, as this paper will point out, in the case of Old English, the pronominal system played a major role in the development of the gender system that we employ today.
