Introduction This report describes results from Save the Children Finland’s (SCF) international work in the period 2008 to 2010 in Africa and Asia. It also constitutes the for- mal report to the Unit for Non-Governmental Organi- zations of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland (MFA) under the partnership agreement. Cooperat- ing with 36 local partners and 6 local administration partners in Africa and Asia, SCF reached approximately 750,000 children in 2010. During this year, nearly 64,000 children benefited directly from SCF’s basic education programmes. More than 125,000 children exposed to violence or exploitation received protection and care. The total expenditure for the SCF International Pro- grammes was over 17 million euros, of which 10.6 mil- lion euros were received from the Ministry for Foreign Photo: Tessa Rintala Affairs of Finland. Participation of children them- selves on matters that affect their lives is a key principle of SCF’s approach. SCF has supported several initia- tives to increase children’s engagement in child protec- tion issues. Investment in water, sanitation and hygiene contributes to the protection, health and development of children. Although emergencies was not selected one of the key focus areas of SCF programme in 2008-2010, the in- creasing number and complexity of human disasters globally and Save the Children International’s (SCI) new initiative “All Members Cooperating in Emergencies” (ACE), with the increasing focus on strengthening Save the Children’s ability to meet humanitarian needs glob- ally, encouraged us get more involved in emergency work. To make a real- ity of our vision for children and our ambitious goals for 2010-2015, SCI needs to become more efficient and better able to deliver results for children. In the future all Save the Children international programmes are coordinated through a single, shared international programmes structure, which will line manage seven regional and over 90 country offices globally. The international programming structure has been developed to improve our ability to provide quality programmes, while supporting Member organisations in many aspects of their work. It will empower Coun- try Directors, moving decision-making to the field and regional level. It will also make Save the Children more efficient, and thus able to reach more children. All member organisations, including SCF, will continue direct contact with the field in areas such as proposal development, programme design, grants management, technical assistance, reporting, monitoring, reviewing and advocacy. Save the Children plans to have the new international programme structure in place by 2013. Photo: SCF Save the Children Finland – International programmes 2008 – 2010 5 2. Strategic Objectives 2.1.
