Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: the Clone Wars
“Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars by Mohammed Shakibnia A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy (Honors Scholar) Presented June 1st, 2020 Commencement June 2021 1 2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Mohammed Shakibnia for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate Arts in Political Science and Philosophy presented on June 1, 2020. Title: “Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Joseph Orosco This project explores how science fiction can be used to examine social justice issues in our contemporary world. I will explore two case studies from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series through a framework of race, empire, and orientalism. Walidah Imarisha’s notion of “visionary fiction” is utilized as a lens to explore how speculative fiction can serve as a tool to understand critical real world issues, and how The Clone Wars allows audiences to envision more just futures. These case studies surround the oppression faced by alien communities in The Clone Wars and are connected to issues of empire and racial inequality experienced by Muslims and Black people in the United States. The first case study uses Edward Said’s Orientalism as a framework to discuss the roots of Islamophobia, empire, the “clash of civilizations”. I connect Said’s work to the treatment of the Talz, an indigenous alien race in The Clone Wars, who face settler-colonial violence and ethnic cleansing from the Pantorans, a group represented by the Republic. -

From Sidious to Nixon: the Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam
From Sidious to Nixon: The Parallels Between Star Wars and Vietnam A Senior Project presented to the Faculty of the History Department California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Liberal Arts By Brennan Simpson March, 2021 © 2021 Brennan Simpson 1 In the case of a film franchise that features twelve movies, five television series, and various other forms of media by the time this paper was written, many people may be surprised to hear that Star Wars was actually inspired by one of the most questionable moments in American history. However, the time period in which Star Wars creator George Lucas first wrote what became this world’s ‘‘first step into a larger world’’ actually greatly reflected what ended up on the big screen. Even though the Star Wars movies take place ‘‘a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away….,’’ it has been publicly stated in interviews that Lucas based both Star Wars media on the Vietnam War and their main villain, Darth Sidious, on former U.S. President Richard Nixon. Though there have been a few scholarly works since the first Star Wars movie was released in theaters in 1977 that have attempted to explore these parallels, none of them has directly explored how Lucas’s long-standing views on the Vietnam War affected certain key moments of the first six Star Wars movies. This thesis explores George Lucas’ antiwar activism before creating Star Wars to demonstrate how remarkably similar the films and related media of this franchise truly are to both various aspects of the Vietnam War and Richard Nixon’s rise to power. -
The Mandalorian'
ILM Used 'Fortnite' Tech to Make Virtual Sets for 'The Mandalorian' https://www.wired.com/story/fortnite-mandalorian-filmmaking-tech/?bx... Angela Watercutter George Lucas was dreaming of a Star Wars live-action TV show long before The Mandalorian got off the ground. One of his collaborators at Industrial Light & Magic, Richard Bluff, remembers Lucas talking about it as far back as 2008. There was just one problem: Going to a galaxy far, far away on a TV budget was nearly impossible. “At the time, he felt he was limited in regards to how he was able to tell the story based upon the vast number of locations and worlds we would need to go to for the small screen,” says Bluff, a visual effects supervisor. “But the audience simply wouldn’t accept a Star Wars without them.” A decade-plus later, things have changed. For one, Disney bought Lucasfilm—and everything that came with it, including ILM. It also put out a lot more Star Wars movies, let Jon Favreau remake The Lion King in virtual reality, and launched a streaming service, Disney+, where any potential live-action series could live forever. So, when Favreau started working on The Mandalorian in early 2018, the possibility that he could make a TV series without sending a whole crew to Jordan—like J.J. Abrams just did for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker—was far more feasible. “Through his experience on Jungle Book and The Lion King," Bluff says, "he felt very strongly that there had been breakthroughs in game-engine technology that were the key to solving this problem." Indeed. -

Star Wars Rebels and the Last Jedi
Unbound: A Journal of Digital Scholarship Realizing Resistance: An Interdisciplinary Conference on Star Wars, Episodes VII, VIII & IX Issue 1, No. 1, Fall 2019 FORCED CREATURES Zooësis in Star Wars Rebels and The Last Jedi Spencer D. C. Keralis Keywords: Star Wars Rebels, Porgs, Critical Animal Studies Non-sentient animals have appeared in the Star Wars universe in roles both integral and decorative since A New Hope premiered in 1977. From beasts of burden like the dewbacks and banthas of Tatooine and the Gungans’ kaadu, to monsters like the wampa, rathtar, and dianoga; to the myriad of critters large and small that inhabit interstellar environments, animals are as much a part of the fabric of the Star Wars tapestry as the various non-human sentient species. In some cases, these creatures are mainly exotic window dressing, but in other instances, these animals are used instrumentally to advance larger narratives. To frame my examination of the use of animals in Star Wars, I borrow performance studies scholar Una Chaudhuri’s useful neologism “zooësis.” Coined by Chaudhuri to articulate “the way culture makes art and meaning with the figure and body of the animal,” encompasses the feelings that animals inspire, and so the affect of animals is an important part of understanding the place of the animal in the Star Wars universe (1). Ezra Bridger’s interaction with animals to explore the Force and to aid the Rebellion in Star Wars Rebels offers one example of how animals are instrumentalized, and Ezra’s affective response to “the figure and body” of these creatures – affection, awe, revulsion, or horror – are fairly straightforward. -

February Chatter (2021)
in this issue >>> By: Mike Till February has many reasons to feel self-concious. First, it is the most commonly mispronounced month of the year. Many people still forget about that first “r” in February. Let’s give this month some respect and emphasize that “r” shall we. Second, it is the shortest month of the year with 28 days. Every four years we give February another day and guess what… it’s still the shortest month. Kind of like when my Mom puts on high heels. She may gain a few inches… but she is still the shortest one in the family. Finally, February is the month of Valentine’s Day. Not saying that Valentine’s Day is bad, just hated by millions of singles who have to put up with the lovey-dovey, extreme PDA couple in the booth next to them at The Olive Garden. All they wanted was some soft, buttery, warm breadsticks! There is one glorious plus side to February. It is the month when Poor Farmer’s Schedule of Events is released. Every February Poor Farmer’s campers get their first look at all the great times they are going to have for the rest of the year. You get to see when the Flea Market dates are, BINGO events, the Annual Cruise-in, The Golf Cart Rodeo, Grandparent’s Weekend, Halloween, and much, much more. Did you know Mike is hosting a Golf Outing in April? Well… you do now. Click on the link below to transport yourself directly to the Poor Farmer’s RV 2021 Schedule of Events.
