The Charismatic Leadership and Cultural Legacy of Stan Lee
REINVENTING THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO: THE CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL LEGACY OF STAN LEE Hazel Homer-Wambeam Junior Individual Documentary Process Paper: 499 Words !1 “A different house of worship A different color skin A piece of land that’s coveted And the drums of war begin.” -Stan Lee, 1970 THESIS As the comic book industry was collapsing during the 1950s and 60s, Stan Lee utilized his charismatic leadership style to reinvent and revive the superhero phenomenon. By leading the industry into the “Marvel Age,” Lee has left a multilayered legacy. Examples of this include raising awareness of social issues, shaping contemporary pop-culture, teaching literacy, giving people hope and self-confidence in the face of adversity, and leaving behind a multibillion dollar industry that employs thousands of people. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary. -

The Tim Ferriss Show Transcripts Episode 71: Jon Favreau Show notes and links at tim.blog/podcast Tim Ferriss: Hello ladies and gents. This is Tim Ferriss, and welcome to another episode of the Tim Ferriss show, where I deconstruct world-class performers to figure out what makes them tick, and moreover, what are the tools, tricks, tactics, routines, books, whatever, secret snacks that you can replicate – that you can actually use in your daily life or in your career, or in your personal endeavors and your journey into life itself. Wow, that was profound. Anyway, my guest for this episode is just a tremendous, tremendous man. He is an actor, writer, director, and producer. His name is Jon Favreau. I’ve been hugely impressed by Jon, and we’ve had an opportunity to spend some time together. He is a man of many talents. He burst onto the acting scene with his role in Rudy. Then he established himself as a writer with the iconic cult hit Swingers, in which he starred, and many of you have seen it. We have a lot of stories about Swingers, which I was surprised by, and I had done a lot of homework. Then Favreau made his feature film directorial debut with Made, which he also wrote and produced. His other directing credits include Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Cowboys and Aliens, Elf, and that was a real turning point for him. So he did get into that, and I did not know that he was involved with Elf before I really dug into it. -

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau arrived together in a black Audi R8 Spyder*. Normally, Audi’s Technical Development team conceals their secret prototypes with a special adhesive foil with a camouflaged pattern of black and white swirls. However, this time Audi Design developed a new camouflage foil with a Spider-Man design specifically for the appearance on the red carpet at the world premiere of ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’. The traditional swirl design has been modified to incorporate spider webs on the vehicle doors and within the signature rings. Even before its official world premiere, the first glimpses of the Audi A8’s can be seen on the big screen in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ – viewers can see parts of the front and side designs in the film. In addition, moviegoers also get to see Audi AI Traffic Jam Pilot in action when Happy Hogan drives Peter Parker and momentarily removing his hands from the wheel. -

Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: the Clone Wars
“Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars by Mohammed Shakibnia A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Arts in Political Science and Philosophy (Honors Scholar) Presented June 1st, 2020 Commencement June 2021 1 2 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Mohammed Shakibnia for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate Arts in Political Science and Philosophy presented on June 1, 2020. Title: “Wars Do Not Make One Great”: Race, Empire, and Orientalism in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Joseph Orosco This project explores how science fiction can be used to examine social justice issues in our contemporary world. I will explore two case studies from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series through a framework of race, empire, and orientalism. Walidah Imarisha’s notion of “visionary fiction” is utilized as a lens to explore how speculative fiction can serve as a tool to understand critical real world issues, and how The Clone Wars allows audiences to envision more just futures. These case studies surround the oppression faced by alien communities in The Clone Wars and are connected to issues of empire and racial inequality experienced by Muslims and Black people in the United States. The first case study uses Edward Said’s Orientalism as a framework to discuss the roots of Islamophobia, empire, the “clash of civilizations”. I connect Said’s work to the treatment of the Talz, an indigenous alien race in The Clone Wars, who face settler-colonial violence and ethnic cleansing from the Pantorans, a group represented by the Republic.
