2 NOV. 19, 2019 NINERTIMES NBC Charlotte investigation revealed that hundreds of classroom doors couldn’t lock during April 30 shooting NEWS Lockdown kits will be added to every classroom by the end of fall 2019 semester by Margaret Rawlings Staff Writer

When a gunman opened fire in a UNC Charlotte classroom on April 30, panicked students and faculty couldn’t lock hundreds of doors during those crucial chaotic moments when protection could have meant life or death. An NBC Charlotte investigation found that half of the doors on campus are not made to lock from the inside. They also discovered some of the doors that do have interior locks do not work properly. “The lights are out. The doors don’t lock, but we do have them blockaded,” said a 911 caller on April 30. UNC Charlotte is in the midst of a six-month external review looking for ways to improve upon what most consider to be a response to an otherwise terrible day on campus. The doors, however, remain one of the loan security lapses. In the meantime, administrators are putting together lockdown kits to make sure that every door is secure and that people are safe in the short term. “Two simple devices: A Wedge-It and a cut First responders at the scene of April 30 shooting, photo by Chris Crews piece of fire hose,” Associate Vice Chancellor for Safety and Security John Bogdan told WCNC. in 2018 from Tiffany Parker, a kindergarten to one, she said. Why is it low-funded schools which are located and assigned to lower income areas, difficult for the residents in one of America’s fastest growing cities to break have fewer opportunities and the National Institutes of Health found that, out of the cycle of poverty? “a low family income during childhood negatively relates to the development The Equality of Opportunity Project report finds five aspects that correlate of positive mental health in youth.” Observing the hit on the last factor to with an increase in economic mobility: a low racial segregation rate, low an increase in economic mobility, we see that a discouragement in morale income inequality in the region to begin with, better public-school systems, through low-income, lack of opportunity, instability in family life and greater collective social capital and consistency in family stability. generational marginalization all lead to a repetitive cycle in low economic Although the city of Charlotte takes pride in its diversity, it is one of the mobility here in the city of Charlotte. most segregated cities in North Carolina. The generational wealth and This leads us to the final question: In this current climate, can the city of Charlotte do anything about these economic and opportunistic inequalities? And if so, why hasn’t anything been done yet? There are groups within the city who are doing their best to address or positively contribute to overcoming this broad economic mobility problem all while the city of Charlotte has been staying silent. In 2017, the CEO of Bank America, Brian Moynihan, called upon the city council of Charlotte to start taking action on its economic mobility issues. And this is coming from a business, who initiated a “No Poor People” policy. They removed their free checking account option with lower-income customers, requiring them to keep more money in their account to avoid a monthly fee of twelve dollars. The city council has been trying to get together many businesses, non-profits and volunteers in the area to think of ways to combat this issue, but it seems to be that the only way Charlotte can directly combat this problem is when they find a way to integrate different income levels in the community. Raj Chetty’s conclusion from the Equality of Opportunity Project report states that “when low-income families live in mixed-income neighborhoods, the potential for upward economic mobility improves dramatically.” Unfortunately, this is not a Marshall Park in Uptown Charlotte, photo by Meredith Murray conversation most upper-class residents want to have.
