Clem's York Primer by Richard B Clem’s York Primer By Richard B."Clem" Clement October Update The Primer is a composite of the personal experiences and views of several attendees and is designed to enrich Eastern Division, TCA’s York Week Experience. The Eastern Division, TCA, Newsletter is the official document for the York Meet. The Primer is not sponsored by any organization; business or company nor does it sell, endorse or promote a particular product. If you have a question about an activity or event listed herein, please contact the listed sponsor. Events off the York Fairgrounds or the NTTM site are not TCA sponsored. This version negates all previous versions. In my view, York is much more than a train-meet. It is about the gathering of families, friends and acquaintances. -Your TCA Family- This Primer highlights the TCA Eastern Division York Train Meet; the TCA Museum, Library and Business Office Activities; member meetings and specified train group activities; non-TCA sponsored train events locally; local attractions; restaurants, tips on navigating the events and the locale. For the price of admission which includes free parking, this is the best deal for a 3 day train meet in the universe. My hope is that the Primer will help you enjoy the week as much as I do. “New info is presented in red.” FLASH NEWS: CELL PHONES ARE NOW PERMITTED FOR USE IN THE YORK HALLS. NO PHOTOS ALLOWED. Reliance Restaurant is closed for breakfast. National Toy Train Museum Open House For your convenience, the schedule may be printed out from: nttmuseum.org/events/Open-House-Fall2013.pdf ------------------------------------ Recent Advice from York County Convention & Visitors Bureau: Hi Clem, I hope that all is well. I wanted to send you some updates for your primer as the York Show is quickly approaching. Here is what we have for you. PennDot Traffic Issues: I-83 Exit 21S to Route 30E is closed. Use Exit 22 George St to get to Route 30E. Work is being done at the York Split on I-83 so be prepared for delays. You mention Hillside Restaurant in the Primer and that restaurant had a fire and is no longer open. There are no longer discount coupons on the York County CVB website however coupons will be available at our information table. Cell phone use is now allowed. Kid’s Corner snacks are donated from the York County CVB (please remove Stauffer’s and Snyder’s from the primer as they no longer donate items). York County Heritage Trust has changed their admission to $15 for adults and $7 for students. Check out their website for details http://www.yorkheritage.org/page.asp?id=1. Worker’s House Museum is no longer. Yorktowne Golf Club is no longer. Wolfgang’s is no longer offering Factory Tours. Commonwealth Room is only operating for private and semi-private events at the Yorktowne Hotel. We have a new attraction in York called Steam Into History. It is a replica Civil War Era Steam Engine. Here is some information that they shared with me. We have excursions that will be running while the TCA is in town. The weather remained reasonable; just a few rain drops, but not enough to dampen the train collector spirit. The USPS continues to cause problems for our pre-registration efforts. Even though we have reverted to sending the meet notice “first class mail”, we continue to receive member complaints reporting “I didn’t receive my meet packet”. Please remember: yes, you can mail it in, and the form to do so is in the meet notice and every edition of the TCA Headquarters Newsletter (5 times a year); you can register online (click the Green START button) or go to https://www.yorkregistration.org, you only need your TCA number and your credit card number; and if you do not have a computer you can call (302.674.5797) and a member of the registration staff will do the online registration for you. ONE BIG ADVANTAGE to registering online is that we mail you your badge(s), so there is only one mail transaction involved. As always, you will receive a York Meet Notice. SIX WAYS TO REGISTER FOR THE YORK MEET Besides online registration we have several other ways to register: ¨ Our call center Answernet will be happy to process a credit card charge for your registration fee. As the days started to become longer and warmer, dormant plants began to show life, and migratory birds appear in our gardens. We anticipate enjoyable time out- side in our natural landscapes. It is time to plant summer annuals and seeds for our home food gardens. Anticipation for growth is something we all look forward to. With very little warning, events occur that abruptly cause us to readjust our well- planned activities. The historic COVID-19 threat caused us to HALT all spring garden club events, such as flower shows, public garden plans and even annual garden club meetings. As we follow mandates to keep us home and safe, deadly spring storms move across our nation, destroying property and taking lives along the way. President Gay taking a break in her garden. Petruzzelli 2015 All Rights Reserved Abstract “SPEAK ABOUT DESTRUCTION”: REPRESENTING 9/11 IN THE SOPRANOS Vito V. Petruzzelli B.A., Rutgers University M.A., Appalachian State University Chairperson: Craig Fischer Broadly definable as an interdisciplinary study of televisual texts, literature, and history, this thesis analyses David Chase’s The Sopranos (1999-2007) and its engagement of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Tracing the show’s narrative and aesthetic roots to its pilot episode, I explore how narrative and aesthetic elements contained in 9/11 television newscasts elicited both an alteration and an exaggeration of the show’s structural and symbolic elements. Furthermore, I illustrate the impact of televisual mediation on the act of viewership, demonstrating the manner in which The Sopranos and 9/11 newscasts employed authoritative narrative perspectives as a means of disseminating vital information to viewers. Methodologically, I employ a narratological approach to show through close textual analysis how elements of location and sequential ordering inform the creation of unique story worlds, and how these story worlds operate symbiotically with viewers in creating meanings beyond the texts.
