There is a long history of AMH operators assisting with rescue efforts during these types of disasters. They often form the backbone of emergency communications. Writing skills get a boost in critique sessions, during which, Anthem Authors read aloud and receive criticism from other members. Authors need positive feedback to keep going as well as criticism to stay on course, and suggestions are best when offered in this spirit. This month’s Spirit features the Tuesday Painters group. Members enjoy this group because it is unstructured and pleasant; everyone works on individual projects, and when requested, others offer help and encouragement. Instructional workshops are offered once every few months, to share ideas and new techniques. Skill levels in this group range from beginner to artist to professional. Newcomers are welcome throughout the year, and members emphasize that no prior painting experience is necessary. Initially, members will offer supplies, such as various types of paper and canvas, and various mediums, such as water colors, acrylic, alcohol ink, and pastels, which are similar to chalk. Photos are often traced using a light box, although they are frequently reproduced without tracing. Watercolors are easily blended and yield soft, transparent images. In addition, watercolors involve “movement”, which means that the colors flow onto the paper, and the artist manipulates the mixture of colors to obtain the desired result. Acrylic is very forgiving. If the initial results using acrylic are not desired, canvases may be painted over multiple times. Acrylic al- lows the painter to paint over a certain area of the piece and start again, or to paint the entire canvas white and reapply colors as desired. In addition, acrylic paint dries very quickly, such that it can be painted and soon after placed into a bag for transportation. Alcohol ink is a creative, experimental technique, where the ink is applied to glass or to specialty paper, and shapes are formed using an Ultra Duster. This technique is very abstract, and somewhat difficult to control, and for that reason, a photo is not easily replicated. Alcohol ink provides very different effects on various surfaces. With the variety of glazes and tools readily available, you can learn something new with every project. Get techniques from a website, glean tips from other members, and visit the Ceramics Room during workshop times, making friends who can share in the joy of creativity. Members teaching members is one of the ways we learn new techniques. Most often this is done on an informal basis, by working in the Ceramics Room together, asking questions about how to use products, the design and inspiration comes from within. Sometimes ceramic club members volunteer to teach other mem- bers and notices of upcoming classes are posted in the clubroom. Coming in April, club members will have an opportunity to participate in a workshop, offered by Marcea Reid, where they can experiment with matte finish glazes to create one of a kind plates.

In March, several club members participated in a two-day workshop, led by Marcea Reid. Utilizing a color loading technique, participants created vibrantly colored vases with a garden theme. Coming in June, the Ceramics Club Beginner Class will be offered for those new to ceramics, as well as those who might need a refresher course. This two-session course will cover clay and bisque, glaze application and ceramic decorations. We will com- plete three projects, which include a greenware piece, mug with crystal glaze, and a silk-screen tile. HIKING For more information about hikes, upcoming events and club contacts visit the club’s website: SCAHikingClub.com. The Hiking Club has more than 30 hike leaders who are the “backbone” of the club. The hike leaders schedule and coordinate numerous local and away hikes, of varying degrees of difficulty, for the enjoyment of the club members. Over the years, the club has increased the number of hikes that are being offered. Most of the hikes are offered on Mondays and Fridays, with an increasing number being offered on Wednesdays. Occasionally, there are also hikes scheduled on Tuesdays or Thursdays. This year, the club has added walks to the mix. This has increased the number of hikes we offer from approximately 20 hikes per month to well over 30. The club started a Century Club four years ago, and this has proven to be a very popular program. Any hiker who hikes at least Majestic Canyon 100 miles on club hikes during the year becomes a member of the Century Club and gets a special club t-shirt at the end of the year. Some of our hikers have hiked as many as 1,000 miles during the year, and we have had approximately 80 hikers earn Century Club status each year for the past three years.

St Patrick’s Hike and Lunch A couple of times a year, the hike leaders arrange a picnic and several hikes of varying degrees of difficulty in the same area. This allows strenuous hikers and more moderate hikers to enjoy hiking at their own level and then socializing together. Often the hiking schedules include hikes with different degrees of difficulty that start from the same trail head on the same day. The Hiking and Outing Club is a very active club, and our hike leaders work hard to coordinate hikes for the enjoyment of hikers of all levels. Each year the hiker participation has increased. The following chart shows the levels of hiker participation and difficulty levels for those hikes over the last five years. 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Easy 90 502 428 312 180 Moderate 150 284 154 663 721 Challenging 313 323 384 703 804 Difficult 326 517 718 1273 1644 Strenuous 475 495 724 797 899 V Strenuous 100 138 244 267 208 X Strenuous 28 Redstone Discovery Total 1454 2259 2652 4015 4484 52 | Sun City Anthem | May 2018 The next club general meeting will be held on Wednesday, HOW TO, CAN DO May 23, at 9 a.m. in the Delaware Room at Anthem Center. Since the last article, the Daytona rally returned with memories of a great trip. If you are a NASCAR fan, this was the trip to be on. The group started their trip from Casa Grande, Arizona. The first multi-day stop was in San Antonio, Texas. From there, it was overnight stops until they reached Daytona, Florida. They spent ten days at Daytona International Speedway attending most of the events. After the Daytona 500 and in between race weekends, the rally spent a few days in Savannah, Georgia. While in Savannah, they went to Paula Deen’s restaurant for a taste of her specialties. A few days in Charleston, South Carolina were squeezed in before heading to Atlanta. The rally arrived at Atlanta Motor Speedway At the Alamo on Friday for another race weekend. On the return trip, the group visited Red Bay, Alabama for a tour of the Tiffin Motor Coach manufacturing plant. Being able to see up close how the RV’s are assembled was a real education. The last multiday stop was New Orleans. A few days of touring, and a day at The New Orleans School of Cooking rounded out the seven week trip. Everyone got home safe with only a few minor mechanical issues. The March “after meeting pot luck” at Independence Center was again a great success because of our membership participation. Great food and, of course, shared friendship always makes for a good time. April was busy with two very popular rallies. First one went to Nevada Treasure RV Resort in Pahrump. The second went to Zion National Park. Both rallies had over twenty RV’s with several planned group activities. The Branson rally will leave early May for a trip to the famed Missouri entertainment center. The first rally of the fall will be to Rocky Point, Mexico. Again, this is shaping up to be a large group. Things are still in the planning Tiffin RV plant stages, so stay tuned in for the next Rocky Point update. 62 | Sun City Anthem | May 2018 The SCA RV Club meets the last Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. in the Penn Room of Independence Center. No meetings June, July or December. For more information you can visit our website SCA-RV-Club.com or contact our club President, Roy Prince, at [email protected] or (702) 889-8221. SCRABBLE

Scrabble, one of the most enduring and popular board games, was invented by Alfred Butts, an unemployed architect, during the Great Depression. He studied the front page of the New York Times newspaper to calculate the frequency of vowels and conso- nants to come up with the tile distribution. He crafted the board on blueprints and pasted them to folded checkerboards. The tiles were done the same way and pasted onto pieces of balsa wood that We invite all of Sun City Anthem to join in the fun with were the same size as the squares. The game started as LEXICO, Scrabble words on Fridays, in the Emerson/Franklin Rooms from then changed to CRISS CROSS WORDS, and finally trademarked 1 to 5 p.m. in Anthem Center. Word of the Month: AALII – a tropical tree SEWING & QUILTING If you have walked past the Sewing Room on any day, you may notice a few ladies, and maybe a few gentlemen, sewing on various projects. Usually they are working on personal proj- ects. Now, if you have walked past on a Thursday afternoon, you would wonder...what’s up in there? The first and second Thursday afternoons from 1 to 4 p.m. is Workshop Day. That’s when members gather under the supervision of Coordinators, Kathy Corless and Carolyn Newman. It is their job to see that projects are started and completed before the items hit the window for sale. The third Thursday of the month is Charity Workshop. In the past we have had charity days with Ryan’s Case for Smiles and steering wheel covers for Veterans with Jerry Peterson. If there is not a charity for that particular Thursday, you may see members taking a quilting class. The fourth Thursday is reserved for UFO’s. That stands for Unfinished Objects, and you can be sure there are plenty of those to work on. Coordinators, Kathy and Carolyn, reserve the first and second Tuesday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. for Cut-Up Gals. This group consists of several members who meet and prepare the items on which the members will work during Thursday’s workshops. No matter how many items they have prepared on Tuesday, rarely are there items remaining for the following week. Members love to attend the workshops, where they can learn a new skill or just help with sewing, ironing, pinning, and of course, eating cookies at break time. As you can see by the accompanying pictures, we have several items for sale. There are too many to list here. In addition to those listed under the pictures, we have many more items. For the child in your life, we have ragtime quilts, map wall hangings and individual placemats. For adults, we have hanging zipper safes to hide your valuables while traveling or at home, wine carriers, neck coolers, Mah Jongg mats, cell phone holders, zipper pouches and lip moisturizer holders. Attendance at March luncheon was huge. 70 | Sun City Anthem | May 2018 I was so impressed I joined on-the-spot, and began a series of safety classes that all new members are required to take. Those classes ensure all Woodchips’ members will operate the tools and equipment safely. Anxiously, I went to the shop prepared to help out on a project or start one of my own. I was a total beginner. My woodworking experience to date con- sisted of using a skillsaw or jigsaw. Now, I had the tools to do some truly precision work. Nothing drove that point home more than what I observed my first day in the shop. When I arrived, one member was constructing a beautiful china hutch for his home. He was making a door to go on the cabinet, and the door had six Left To right: SCAWC President, Patricia Lindberg; spindles inserted into the face. Now, I’d just go to Home Depot and Henderson Mayor, Debra March; SCAWC President-Elect, Bella Meese; buy six spindles. But this artful crafter took six pieces of oak and and Henderson Councilman, Dan Shaw put each one, in turn, on a lathe. Then he proceeded to “turn” each spindle and make six identical pieces. That observation caused me to truly appreciate the capabilities of our SCA woodshop, and the skills of the members who are part of the club. Throughout subsequent years, my personal skills and confidence have increased, due in no small part to the help and advice each member offers. I often joke, it takes an hour to cut a piece of wood because everyone offers their advice on how to start! I’ve made many new friends, and I have never before experienced the New members with President Patricia Lindberg and camaraderie that exists between club members. President-Elect Bella Meese.
