JOHN HENRY RYAN III Freelance Sound Engineer

Curriculum Vitae

A dual citizen of Italy and the United States Of America, dual passport holder, fluent in English and Italian. Presently residing in Italy, but available to relocate temporarily or permanently if required.

John’s interest in music started during his early childhood, listening and learning to appreciate music in every form and style. A self-taught guitar and electric bass player with an extraordinary musical ear, he soon found that the technical aspect of music reproduction was what would have led him to the present successful career, first by mixing for local bands in clubs, followed by 9 years in one of Southern Italy's busiest recording studios. After a long time sitting behind the studio mixer, John was missing some excitement, so he naturally went back to his initial interest; live sound mixing.

After graduating at Forrest Sherman High School in Italy in 1975, he worked in father's editorial distribution company, mainly involved with the US Military bases in Italy and part of the Mediterranean.

In 1977, John happened to jump into the consumer audio world, hired by Germany based H.E.A.T. (Harman Europe Audio Team), as sales representative for 5 leading Hi-Fi brands, at the NATO audio retail store in Naples Italy, where he operated until 1979.

In 1979, John was offered to go on tour with two of Italy's leading and top selling artists to this day; as FOH engineer for Italian pop star (R.I.P.), followed by a tour in 1980 with as monitor engineer. This "new" professional activity brought John to follow a recording engineer course at The Recording Workshop in Ohio, USA, eventually graduating with a final rating of 99.9%, reaching the "Top Of The Crop" (3 out of 84 students) of the school's 1980 winter session.

Back in Naples Italy, John was soon hired as resident Recording/Mixing Engineer at Executive Studios, operating there between 1982 and 1991. During these years, John managed the studio’s agenda and recorded and mixed productions for some of the biggest names in the Italian music business, most of which gained the top 10 positions on the Italian charts, as well as recordings for RAI TV, Italy’s national television network. Strangely enough, some of these recording artists would soon become his future "live" artists.

John is well known and respected among the many Italian audio rental companies, production agencies and artists, with whom he has established a long term relationship, mixing their live performances. One of John’s most important collaborations has been with Lombardi Service (now Rooster https://www.roostersrl.com), in Termoli, Italy, presently one of Italy’s most requested sound companies and owners of the largest stock of Adamson Audio systems in Southern Europe to this day. The company's choice to acquire the Canadian brand came after John suggested to invest in this brand and draw a line between Lombardi Service’s major competitors, which thousands of audience members and fans were able to appreciate during the following 5 years of touring with artist Gigi D'Alessio, as well as the large number of Italian productions and festivals.

During the summer of 2004, John was fortunate to meet extraordinaire producer / artist, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, with whom he has cooperated as FOH sound engineer and Tech Production Manager until the end of 2018, advancing tech requirements with event promoters and production companies worldwide, managing rental budgets and logistics for hundreds of shows and thousands of miles travelled around the world, bringing CHIC's dance music to millions of happy fans, including major festivals such as Rock In Rio, Electric Picnic, Glastonbury, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Isle Of Wight and many others throughout Europe, USA, Australia and Asia. During these years, John also translated Nile Rodger's website blog, in Italian: http://www.nilerodgers.com/blogs/pianeta-c-in-italiano.

Besides the many important international festivals, John has been responsible for managing sound and crew for other major national and international productions, curating technical management for the "Freak Out Montreux" event, during Montreux Jazz 2012, which covered over ten hours of live music and DJ performances in the Stravinsky Hall.

John has lived through the crossover between analog and digital audio and was one of the first to pioneer on pro audio digital mixing systems in Italy. “My preference today, for digital mixers as opposed to analog mixers, is based mainly on setup time reduction as well as the internal processing capabilities and reduced footprint, although I still believe that nothing will ever equal the creativity and quality obtainable with high-range professional analog mixers. However, regardless of digital or analog, the tools for my trade are only the medium with which I am able to express my musical sensibility at its best”.

John has lived most of his personal and professional life in Naples Italy, but in 2008 he relocated to Tuscany, minutes away from beautiful Firenze.
