  • William Seward and the Trent Affair
William Seward and the Trent Affair http://civilwar150.longwood.edu In late December, 1861, the Trent Affair continued to dominate national and international news, with President Lincoln and his secretary of state, William Seward, both playing major roles in ending the controversy. Born in Orange County, New York in 1801, William H. Seward was one of the most prominent anti-slavery politicians of the mid-1800s, first as a Whig and then as a Republican. He had studied law at Union College in 1820 and within a few years entered the world of politics. Starting in 1830, Seward served in the New York state senate, and in 1838 he became governor of New York for the first of two terms. Even though Seward was born into a slave owning family, his abolitionist stance made him well known and in 1849 and 1855 he was elected to the U.S. Senate. In the aftermath of the Compromise of 1850 he had gained prominence for his “Higher Law” speech opposing the expansion of slavery. Seward hoped to obtain the Republican nomination for president in 1860, and was disappointed when the party chose Abraham Lincoln as its standard bearer. After Lincoln won the presidential election, Seward accepted the position of Secretary of State, hoping he could influence the less- experienced president. Seward and Lincoln clashed over various issues during the early months of the administration, but he eventually developed into an able and loyal cabinet member. In early November 1861, Captain Charles Wilkes of the U.S.S. San Jacinto had seized Confederate diplomats James Mason and John Slidell from British ship Trent.

Our focus this year has been one of protection of the specialty and advocacy for patient care. Outcomes of these endeavors are a direct reflection upon our members’ engagement at the Board of Directors level, at Regional and State Sections and in the local communities. The American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Education and Licensure approval of our recertification document reaffirmed our specialty status and formally substantiates the need for specialty care in the dental community. The ACP persists in the Round Table discussions with the ADA in advancing oral health in America. The ACP continues to interface at the Commission on Dental Accreditation by simultaneously protecting the parameters of our specialty and promoting oral health. The ACP also produced the landmark Evidence-Based Guidelines for Denture Care with unrestricted grant support from Glaxo Smith Kline that resulted in publication as a supplement to the February 2011 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association.

  • Operation TOMODACHI: a Ten-Year Commemoration the Great East Japan Earthquake and Operation TOMODACHI – Speech by General Ryoichi Oriki (JGSDF, Ret.)
Operation TOMODACHI: A Ten-Year Commemoration The Great East Japan Earthquake and Operation TOMODACHI – Speech by General Ryoichi Oriki (JGSDF, Ret.) Translated by Ms. Shiori Okazaki Good morning, everyone. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in today’s event with the Japan U.S. Military Program (JUMP), co-organized by the Embassy of Japan in the United States and Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA. I am grateful to see Ambassador Tomita, who just assumed his post; Dr. Akimoto; and Admiral Walsh, who served as the commander of Operation TOMODACHI. It has been ten years since the Great East Japan Earthquake, which was Japan’s greatest national crisis in recent years, resulting in many casualties. I would like to once again thank those who immediately extended their support after the disaster: the U.S. government, the American people, Ambassador Roos and the staff at the U.S. Embassy in Japan, and our many friends in the U.S. military who served on the ground during Operation TOMODACHI. The areas affected by the disaster are recovering, but there are still many issues to be addressed, including decommissioning the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. As recently as last month, on February 13, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit Fukushima and other areas, injuring more than 150 people. This was apparently an aftershock of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Major earthquakes like these are still a traumatic reminder of 10 years ago for many Japanese people—especially those in the areas affected by the disaster. 2 Translated by Ms. Shiori Okazaki The Great East Japan Earthquake was a complex disaster consisting of an earthquake, tsunami, and the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.

  • USS San Diego
USS San Diego On Wednesday morning the United State cruiser San Diego will be formally rechristened in San Diego’s harbor . No city on the California coast has been so signally honored by the government, and the fact that a modern war vessel with its hundreds of men will carry the name of San Diego to all parts of the United States and the world is worthy of a celebration. --San Diego Union, September 14, 1914. With a gala ceremony in San Diego harbor, the flagship cruiser of the Pacific fleet was christened with style. Thousands watched as the daughter of the mayor, six-year-old Miss Annie May O’Neall, undraped a canvas over the stern, revealing the name “SAN DIEGO.” Mayor Charles O’Neall proudly declared the day a city holiday. A barbecue honoring the ship’s sailors was held in Balboa Park and the officers and their ladies were treated to a grand ball at the U.S. Grant Hotel. The USS San Diego was the new name for a heavy armored cruiser that had been launched ten years earlier as the California. Built in San Francisco by the famed Union Iron Works, the ship was 505 feet in length, 70 feet in width, and displaced 13,600 tons. Coal-fired steam engines turned two eighteen-foot diameter propellers and powered the ship to a top speed of 22 knots. The cruiser was a Pennsylvania-class ship, one of the most potent warships in the world. Its armament included four eight-inch guns, 14 six-inch guns, and an assortment of rapid fire weapons and torpedo tubes.
