April Wine I Like to Rock: Live in London 1981 April Wine I Like To Rock: Live In London 1981 Their first ever DVD! Classic archive material from London's Hammersmith Odeon during the band's 1981 tour of the UK. This DVD contains a complete and incredible concert performed at London's Hammersmith Odeon during the band's 1981 tour of the UK. They formed in late 1969 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and their first hit, "Fast Train," appeared in 1971, the same year as the self-titled debut album. The next year brought the band's first Canadian number one single, "You Could Have Been a Lady," from the On Record album. In 1976, The Whole World's Goin' Crazy became the first Canadian album to go platinum and their resulting tour was the first to gross one million dollars. After 1978's First Glance and 1979's Harder... Faster, 'Just Between You and Me' became April Wine's biggest U.S. hit. The single (one of three Top 40 American singles by the band) propelled 1981's Nature of the Beast album to platinum-record status. 1984's Animal Grace was their last album, but in the early 1990's all the original members joined for a Canadian tour, which convinced them to resume recording, they are still recording and touring the world to their ever-loyal fan-base. Just Between You and Me: A Memoir. By Myles Goodwyn. Toronto, Ontario: Harper Collins, 2016. 379 pp. ISBN 978-1- 44344-670-9. Reviewed by: David Montgomery, York University Libraries1 The story arc of any rock memoir is predictable. It begins or ends with substance abuse, there are troubled family relationships, extra-marital affairs, betrayals, friends left behind, “musical differences,” management conflicts, and of course, as in any bildungsroman the vicissitude of fortune. The guitar slinger turned raconteur is duty-bound to caution that even modest fame comes at a price, that “rock and roll is a vicious game.” Like the music, the memoir embraces the cliché. On his third go at rehab, April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn reflects, “Things come in threes” (341). Goodwyn tells us that the goal of his unvarnished memoir was to set the record straight, and not to settle old scores. Neither as beloved as Rush, nor as emblematic as The Tragically Hip, April Wine was nonetheless quintessentially Canadian. With roots in the Maritimes and Quebec, the band regularly toured Ontario rock circuits in the early 1970s, expanding its range to the rest of Canada by the end of the decade. It peaked in the early 1980s, with modest success in England and the US, and garnered worldwide sales of 20 million albums—a solid career. Yet, despite winning several Juno awards and in 2010 being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, April Wine may also be a candidate for a quick fade. While songs such as “Weeping Widow,” “Oowatanite,” and “Roller” may resonate with the home demographic, future induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unlikely.

  • News Items from the Kendall County Record, 1870-1889
News items from the Kendall County Record, 1870-1889. 1870 January Jan. 6: The transferment of Oswego from 1869 to 1870 took place at the usual time and without any unusual manifestation; with the exception of those who attended the Watch- meeting of the Methodists, most of its inhabitants were asleep, and therefore unconscious of the great event when it took place; at the Watch-meeting Elder Davison very forcibly reminded his hearers of their short comings in '69 and earnestly exhorted them to do better in '70. Among the newly married are Charles Kimball and Helen Schram; J. Bissell Hunt and Mary F. Porter, our popular teacher; John G. Faust and Almira Hafenrichter. The ladies’ fair and festival in support of the projected hearse was only a partial success; the net profits amounting to only about $80. No discouragement, however, is apparent on the part of the association. These ladies seem to be bound to have a hearse and be buried in style. The gossip mongers very nearly succeeded in starting another sensation. It appears that on New Year’s evening several young gentlemen met together and in order to further the enjoyments of this august holiday, they resorted to some of the ordinary stimulants, the effects of which it was said to have been somewhat extraordinary, producing more than the usual result and seemingly having more than the ordinary properties to make drunks. Yorkville: Hon. Henry Sherrill, member of the Constitutional Convention from Kendall county, introduced a resolution on Monday “that the fees and emoluments of town and county officers for like services performed shall be uniform throughout the State and that all Sheriffs that be eligible for reelection.” At the last session of the Legislature, Mr.

  • The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies
THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO REMIX STUDIES The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic interna- tional movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authen- ticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aes- thetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom. Eduardo Navas is the author of Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling (Springer, 2012). He researches and teaches principles of cultural analytics and digital humanities in the School of Visual Arts at The Pennsylvania State University, PA. Navas is a 2010–12 Post- Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen, Norway, and received his PhD from the Program of Art and Media History, Theory, and Criticism at the University of California in San Diego. Owen Gallagher received his PhD in Visual Culture from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin. He is the founder of TotalRecut.com, an online com- munity archive of remix videos, and a co-founder of the Remix Theory & Praxis seminar group.
