It seems like I have just begun my term as President but it’s almost time to hand over the gavel to a new president for the 2013/14 year. I would like to thank all the directors for their great support which has made my role relatively easy. So what’s happened during this past year? Mostly business as usual especially for the activity groups. We celebrated the club’s 25th anniversary with a well-attended fall dinner. Our club membership is up about 7% for the year and is currently around 950. Over the past year, the board reviewed the method for deter- mining the activity group subsidies and came up with a new methodology for the upcoming financial year. We believe the revised system which is based on group membership and participant events will be more eq- uitable. All the activity groups have been informed what their subsidy will be for the 2013/14 year so that they can budget appropriately. In the last newsletter, I mentioned that we were trying to modify the club name to better represent the changes in the club membership. Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement with IOL HR on an acceptable alternative (short and descriptive) therefore this initiative has been deferred. As Gerry told me last year when I took over as president - “don’t change anything and you will do ok”. IOL continues to make available to annuitants their hotel (mainly major hotels in large Canadian cities) and rental car discount agreements. Since IOL does not want to publish these agreements, any annuitant who wants to take advantage of this program should contact one of the ERAC directors for details." The annual AGM Luncheon and Arts and Crafts Show is coming up on May 8th. We encourage everyone to register early since the attendance the last couple of years has essentially filled the room. Due to fire regulations, we cannot exceed the room capacity and late registrations may have to be turned away. It’s been a privilege. Jim

WHAT A “LOVELY” EVENT Gourmets As each bowler arrived, a number was drawn to determine who fun was bowling on which team. It was then a bee-line to the events room to marvel at the culinary creations the fellows had prepared to impress their Valentine bowling ladies. There were delightful finger foods, cakes, cookies and chocolates enough to make everyone swoon! Then to the novelty bowling games with winning teams and prizes: (See photos) Connie Scruton, Shirley Triffo, (Clarence standing in) Rick Kry and Nick Weyland gambled everything to become the top Poker Bowling team! Several holes-in-one, aka strikes, gained Charlotte Dileandro (with Nate Golfers cheerleading), Elsie Lewis, Herb Swanston and Peter Perry the day’s top foursome of Golf Bowling! Then the super-fast team of Olive Kippen, Gila Millar, Frank Dillon and Gary Scruton crossed the finish line, almost twice as fast as the other teams, to win the Bowling Around game.

With bowling done, food trays picked clean and draw prizes of Valentine’s chocolates distributed, Gamblers Gallopers it was indeed a “Lovely” Valen- tine’s event. Plan to be part of bowling next season; we’d love to have you! Our Bowling Wind-Up party is scheduled for the Calgary Curling Club on April 15.

Explore Something New Over the past couple of years, Rosemary and I have discovered the HD Live Broadcasts of the New York Metropolitan Opera that are shown at certain movie theaters in the city. They happen on designated Saturdays starting at 11AM (1PM matinee performance in New York). The seats are reserved, music is beautiful, the high definition broadcast provides a view better than in-house seating and the views behind the scene and interviews of performers during intermission are special. I want to start a group to take in 2 or 3 out of the 12 or so performances that are broadcast during the year. My vision is a group of 10-30 of us Esso Annuitants would agree on 2 or 3 to see during the season, I would get tickets for all of us (nominal club subsidy perhaps) and perhaps meeting before the performance in an unused theatre in Chinook Scotia Bank Theaters to discuss the upcoming performance. After viewing the performance, we may then go for lunch/dinner at a nearby restaurant. If you are interested in joining, send me a note. We would need to decide before August this year which performances we would attend as a group in the 2013-14 year, and exactly what we want to do. I will organize the tickets for the decided performances, and make arrangements for what we decide we will do. The 2012-13 curling season has ended. Nineteen highly competitive games were played by members and guests of the ERAC Curling Club. Our 10 mixed teams played two, nine game round-robin schedules, and a one day bonspiel in High River (see article and photos below) for a very successful season. The competition level tightened from the fall to spring seasons and the final standings were not determined until the final rock, of the final end on the last day of curling, when Larry Inaba’s team overtook Andy Strilchuk. Both teams went undefeated thru the spring with Strilchuk having 2 ties versus 1 for Inaba. The fall season ended with the same skips leading the way with different teams playing for them. (Both skips lost only one game each for the year) A roast turkey dinner was enjoyed at our spring wrap up with 50/50 winners enjoying the proceeds of sales plus sponsor gifts of Nike golf jackets and shirts. Bep Van Straaton and Ron Kish- Winners: Bill Bullas, Gary Cain, Larry lewich won the dice roll. Inaba, Jerry Reynar (missing) , We do have openings for curlers for next season as our goal is to Terry Kaminsky expand to 12 teams. We can accommodate all levels of players, so to reserve your spot, please contact Dennis Heacock at 241- 6492 or E mail [email protected]. Regular curlers or spares are most welcome. We thank the committee of Delane Bro, who developed a very successful “spares” program using e-mail; Bill Bullas, Cec Huff- man, treasurer; Dennis Heacock and Richard Sawka for all the highly successful behind-the scenes organization. Our sincere thanks go to all the spares who curled on an-“as-needed” basis to keep our teams at full strength. And last and by no means least, all the curlers who came out every week to enjoy a great time of Runners Up: Gary Mann, Darlen e curling and socializing. Simmons, Andy Strilchuk, High River Bonspiel On Saturday, Feb 9 ten teams from the Larry Wood Esso Annuitant Curling League competed with 6 teams from the High River Seniors in our 12 th annual bonspiel. A fine meal was provided by the ladies of High River and was enjoyed by all. A full turnout of players were there, and after two games, High River’s Frank Dyck came out on top while the Esso team of Richard Sawka was a close second.

Esso Annuitants Woodworking Club, Jan/Feb The Woodworking Club has been active in January and February with some individual projects, and a meet- ings at Black Forest Wood Products that featured a Veneering Course in Jan., and a meeting in Feb. at Rick Kruse’s shop in Okotoks, that included an “offset” turning: demonstration. The woodworkers have started their toy projects for the Food bank, which are a big hit with the kids. Upcoming activities for spring 2013 include : Mar 27 - Richard Sawka’s shop, and Southern Alberta Woodworkers Society - “SAWS” project. April - Habitat for Humanity Work Day – date not set. May 8 - AGM woodworking display, toys for food bank. May - shop tour date to be determined. May/June - Food Bank delivery of toys January - “How to Work with Veneer” course. In January, 12 members of the club took in the “How to Work with Veneer” training at Black Forest Wood Products. The course was very informative and included the following topics: 1)Preparing and flattening veneers. 2)Seaming. 3)Types of adhesive. 4)Mechanical and vacuum attachment (sealing) 5) Pattern matching, February - Kruse shop - “Offset turning” demo . On Feb 27 th nine members met at Rick Kruse’s workshop in Okotoks for a short meeting, and a wood turn- ing demonstration by Rick on “offset turning”. Rick ran through the steps in turning a goblet with an offset stem, as well as some sharpening tips, lathe introduction and safety. Thank you, Penny, for supplying the cookies and muffins.

South Health Campus “Mail Box Shelving System” project Some of our woodworkers volunteer on a regular basis at different places throughout the city. Two such woodworkers are Herb Swanston and Rick Kry who volunteer at the Foothills hospital. Herb is a pioneer at the Foot hills, having volunteered there for the past 17 years. A recent project require- ment was a “Mail Box Shelving System” for the new South Calgary Health Center. Rick Kry drew up the scale plans. Tim Hawkings and Herb Swanston lead the effort, assisted by Rick Kruse. Tim Hawkings was the biggest con- tributor for this project. He was kind enough to donate his shop, and Janice her kitchen for lunch and coffee breaks. Tim also refined the design, and used his vehicles to pick up most of the supplies and to deliver the finished product. The staff at SHC were very happy with the results. Esso Resources Annuitant Newsletter April , 2013 WINE APPRECIATION Dwain Weckman 403 239 2394 [email protected]

The theme for our February wine tasting event was ‘Wines of Italy’. Al and Rose Davis, along with Rick and Gabriela Trow, went on a trip to Italy last fall. Al, Gabriela, Rick, and Richard Sawka presented 6 wines that reflected some of their wine tasting experiences while in Italy. It was an evening with excellent wines, informative and humorous presentations, special photos, and a lot of laughter from club members. The wine tasting event in March featured “The Best Wines by Country”, and included very informative presentation by Al Davis, and stories of personal experiences of Argentinean barbeques featuring an abundance of beef and wine by Gabriela Trow. The theme for the April 2nd tasting event will be “B.C and Ontario Wines”, which will be presented by our Cellar Masters, Al Davis and Gabriela Trow. Our season will conclude with a Gourmet Dinner Gala at the Calgary Winterclub on May 14, 2013. The evening will commence at 6:00 p.m. with a Champagne reception and appetizers followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. The event fee for member sippers will be $55.00, and a full schedule of fees for non-sippers and guests will be posted on the Wine Club web site and announced at the April wine tasting event. An E-Vite message will be sent out to wine Appreciation Club members and you will be required to register and pay for this event prior to the cut off date of May 3. Cheques are to be given to Dianne Partington at the end of the April wine tasting event if you can, or sent to Dianne Partington by mail. The Wine Appreciation Club needs new volunteers for the positions of Cellar Master (2), Chef du Fromage, and Room Set-up for next season. Please contact Dwain Weckman if you are interested in volunteering for any of these positions. The Wine Appreciation Club meets at the Lakeview Community Hall at 7:30 pm on the first Tuesday of each month from October to December and from Feb. to May. The calendar of events for the 2012/13 sea- son is posted on the Club’s website. New members are always welcome. The tentative dates for Esso Monthly golf for the 2013 season are: May 15 June 5 June 26 July 24 Aug 14 Sept 04 The events are always on Wednesday and are held at different courses within a reasonable driving distance of Calgary. The seventh and final windup event is planned for late September at D’Arcy Ranch golf course with a date that will be based on availability. Currently there is no plan to hold a tournament in Ponoka this year. I will be pre-arranging a small group booking of six tee times starting around 10:30 am for each of the events. Everyone on my golf e-mail distribution list will be informed of each event about ten days prior to the event. Foursomes will then be developed from the responses to my e-mail. Those participating in the monthly golf events are responsible for paying their own green fee and cart fee at the course. Is it possible? Is it almost the hiking season? Yes, it’s true. It will soon be upon us. The schedule of hikes for 2013 is now available. See http://www.essoannuitants.ca/hiking.html for the list. We will be doing a number of favourites from previous years as well as some hikes that we haven’t done for some time. We are fortunate to have Traxx Coachlines as our bus providers again – maybe Jonathan will actually catch a fish this year! On May 23rd we will have a special treat organized by Tim Hawkings to the Red Deer River Badlands. This will be our 4th annual Badlands hike organized by Tim and it has become a popular outing for the Club. The Badlands of East Alberta is a special and magic part of our Province – and such a difference from our usual hikes into the mountains. Another “extra” for this year will be a trip to the Kootenay area which is being organized by John Mannix for Sep 15th to 18th . http://www.crossriver.ca has details on the area and the accommodation for this trip. Reminder : The Hiking Club registration meeting will be Friday, April 26th . As usual, it will be held at the Lakeview Community Centre at 6110-34th Street S.W. at 9:30 a.m. New members are always welcome. Please contact Greg via phone or email if you have any questions.

The 2012/2013 Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe season has been a stellar one, with 461 member activity days accumulated to date from 19 Thursday outings and 3 overnight trips. Club membership currently stands at 68. The 2nd Annual William Watson Overnight (Mar 4-6) had 20 participants enjoy 3 days of clear skies, comfortable temperatures and great conditions in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park. With the onset of warmer temperatures, snow conditions are showing early signs of deterioration, however weekly outings will continue as long as conditions permit. Snowshoeing will most likely continue into April. The Club season windup meeting and social is scheduled for March 28 at the Lakeview Community Center.
