I would like to thank all the directors for their great support which has made my role relatively easy. So what’s happened during this past year? Mostly business as usual especially for the activity groups. We celebrated the club’s 25th anniversary with a well-attended fall dinner. Our club membership is up about 7% for the year and is currently around 950. Over the past year, the board reviewed the method for deter- mining the activity group subsidies and came up with a new methodology for the upcoming financial year. We believe the revised system which is based on group membership and participant events will be more eq- uitable. All the activity groups have been informed what their subsidy will be for the 2013/14 year so that they can budget appropriately. In the last newsletter, I mentioned that we were trying to modify the club name to better represent the changes in the club membership. Unfortunately, we could not come to an agreement with IOL HR on an acceptable alternative (short and descriptive) therefore this initiative has been deferred. As Gerry told me last year when I took over as president - “don’t change anything and you will do ok”. IOL continues to make available to annuitants their hotel (mainly major hotels in large Canadian cities) and rental car discount agreements. Since IOL does not want to publish these agreements, any annuitant who wants to take advantage of this program should contact one of the ERAC directors for details." The annual AGM Luncheon and Arts and Crafts Show is coming up on May 8th. We encourage everyone to register early since the attendance the last couple of years has essentially filled the room. Due to fire regulations, we cannot exceed the room capacity and late registrations may have to be turned away. It’s been a privilege. Jim CLUB MEMBERSHIPS Rick Kry 403 259 2951 [email protected] Mail: 38 Spokane St. SW, Calgary AB T2W 0M5 We welcome the following new members to the club and look forward to meeting you at upcoming club activities and functions. A cheque made out to Esso Resources Annuitant Club and mailed to me will do the trick. You can also catch me at some function and pay me there. Also, more email money transfers are being utilized by the computer adventurous for dues payment and they are proving very fast and convenient. Email transfers work, but unfortunately, paypal isn’t in the current list of options. Membership matters can be addressed to me according to the contact information in the banner. It was then a bee-line to the events room to marvel at the culinary creations the fellows had prepared to impress their Valentine bowling ladies. There were delightful finger foods, cakes, cookies and chocolates enough to make everyone swoon! Then to the novelty bowling games with winning teams and prizes: (See photos) Connie Scruton, Shirley Triffo, (Clarence standing in) Rick Kry and Nick Weyland gambled everything to become the top Poker Bowling team! Several holes-in-one, aka strikes, gained Charlotte Dileandro (with Nate Golfers cheerleading), Elsie Lewis, Herb Swanston and Peter Perry the day’s top foursome of Golf Bowling! Then the super-fast team of Olive Kippen, Gila Millar, Frank Dillon and Gary Scruton crossed the finish line, almost twice as fast as the other teams, to win the Bowling Around Alberta game.

Just Between You and Me: A Memoir. By Myles Goodwyn. Toronto, Ontario: Harper Collins, 2016. 379 pp. ISBN 978-1- 44344-670-9. Reviewed by: David Montgomery, York University Libraries1 The story arc of any rock memoir is predictable. It begins or ends with substance abuse, there are troubled family relationships, extra-marital affairs, betrayals, friends left behind, “musical differences,” management conflicts, and of course, as in any bildungsroman the vicissitude of fortune. The guitar slinger turned raconteur is duty-bound to caution that even modest fame comes at a price, that “rock and roll is a vicious game.” Like the music, the memoir embraces the cliché. On his third go at rehab, April Wine frontman Myles Goodwyn reflects, “Things come in threes” (341). Goodwyn tells us that the goal of his unvarnished memoir was to set the record straight, and not to settle old scores. Neither as beloved as Rush, nor as emblematic as The Tragically Hip, April Wine was nonetheless quintessentially Canadian. With roots in the Maritimes and Quebec, the band regularly toured Ontario rock circuits in the early 1970s, expanding its range to the rest of Canada by the end of the decade. It peaked in the early 1980s, with modest success in England and the US, and garnered worldwide sales of 20 million albums—a solid career. Yet, despite winning several Juno awards and in 2010 being inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, April Wine may also be a candidate for a quick fade. While songs such as “Weeping Widow,” “Oowatanite,” and “Roller” may resonate with the home demographic, future induction into Cleveland’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unlikely.

Headliner with John Cafferty of the Beaver Brown Band with Michael ‘Tunes’ Antunes, Randall Hall formerly of Lynyrd Skynard and Stephanie V :: Saturday, May 13 at 8pm The legendary “East Coast Rock’n’Roll” group John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band began their career in 1972 and achieved mainstream success in the 1980s with the “Eddie & The Cruisers - Motion Picture Soundtrack”. The hit single “On the Dark Side” held the “Number-One” position on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts for “five” consecutive weeks. As of 2012, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band remains a top concert attraction touring nationally on an annual basis and they have placed new songs into the soundtracks of several major motion pictures including “Jersey Girl” and the smash hit “There’s Something About Mary.” Randall Hall has the Monkees to thank for his gritty guitar playing. In 1987 he was asked by guitarist Allen Collins to take his place in Lynyrd Skynyrd after Collins’ paralyzing car accident. Hall remained a member of the band until 1994 and appeared on the albums Southern by the Grace of God, Lynyrd Skynyrd 1991, and The Last Rebel. The early 2000s found the guitarist fronting and touring with his own project, the Randall Hall Band. Stephanie Varone is a singer, songwriter, and performer, combining her earthy old school Kansas City roots with a love of country, pop, classic rock, and soulful blues.
