THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
MESSAGE FOR A CEREMONY IN HONOUR OF SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO AND ANNA LINDH AT THE EMBASSY OF CHILE IN ARGENTINA Buenos Aires, 27 April 2004
Sergio Vieira de Mello and Anna Lindh were each, in their own way, irreplaceable assets of the international community.
People of many countries, on almost every continent, will remember Sergio Vieira de Mello as someone who was there to help them hi their hour of greatest need. Today, I think I speak for many of us in saying that never been a time in world affairs when the international community was in greater need of Sergio's qualities, character and courage.
Sergio embodied the best of the United Nations. His work epitomized everything the Organization stands for. He dealt willingly with the most daunting challenges, undertook the most uncomfortable assignments, tackled the toughest missions, hi everything he did, Sergio reached out to local communities, empowering them to take up leadership roles. If anyone had the diplomatic skill, insight, compassion and commitment to make local communities true partners in the work of the United Nations on the ground, it was Sergio. He set a standard for all humanitarians, peacekeepers, peacemakers, and peacebuilders.
In the same way, we will always remember Anna Lindh as a unique source of inspiration. Anna was a great Swede, a great European, and a great friend of the United Nations. I wish there were more world citizens like her. An exceptional human being, Anna was able to reach out to every generation, across every national border, across every cultural boundary. Her profound commitment to peace, justice, development and human rights embodied the very principles for which the United Nations stands.
We miss them both sorely. But both Sergio and Anna leave a legacy of light, which I hope will inspire several generations of peacebuilders to come.

Tengo el agradY dc inforroarle a Ud. que el dfa 27 de abril proximo se conmemorara en la Embajada de Chile en Argentina a los diplomaticos caidos durante el cumplimiento dc su trabajo, en el ano 2003, emre las cuales estan el Representante Especial de Naeiones Unidas en Irak, Sergio Veira Dc Mello y la Canciller de Suecia, Anna Lindh. ..
Esta sesi6n estara organizada en conjunto con la Fundaci6n Raoul Wallenberg y contara con la asistencia de todos el cuerpo diplomitico acrcditados en Argentina y con los sobrevivientes del Holooausto que faeron Salvador por el diplomatico sueco duranle la Segunda Guerra Mundial y que viven accaalmenie en este pais.
