Coincidentally, on the day of her birthday, the Mothers’ Union had their opening service and the theme for this year “Faith in Action”. What better example of Faith in Action than Stella? I remember at Jean Dixon’s funeral in the parish church, a young man home from the Air Force for the funeral, pointed her out to me and asked, ‘Is that Stella McMillan? She was my Sunday School teacher and she made a difference in my life’. When I am out and about visiting in the parish, or even when I’m meeting people socially who have a past link with this parish, people ask, ‘Do you know Stella McMillan’? Stella, an example of Faith in Action. So what does “Faith in Action” look like in our lives, and what does scripture say about it? In Matthew 5:14 Jesus tells us this, ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven’. A lamp on a stand giving light to everyone in the house. Perhaps that sounds a bit showy, does it? Well it might, except Jesus qualifies it, ‘Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven’. In other words, we don’t do good works to be “seen”. We do them to bring glory to God. You may ask, ‘Do we not do good deeds to get us into heaven’? Let us be quite clear about that - good works do not get us into heaven! It is only by the grace of God, and through belief in His son Jesus Christ and the work he did at the cross - his death and resurrection - that gets us there! In James 2 we read, ‘You have faith; I have deeds. Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds’. Our deeds do not come first; our faith comes first and our deeds are the working out of our faith in the ordinary conditions of our lives as we reach out to others in Jesus’ name. We congratulate Stella for a life well lived in her Saviour. We pray for God’s blessing on her and give thanks for her example and her love. With every blessing in Christ, Carol Art For Fun Class Thursday 10.30 in the Church Hall This was a provisional six week course due to run until 16th February but, watch this space for further courses to come. So far it has been a tremendous success - good fun, good memories and good pictures too. In fact, they have been inspiring! Again, no experience or equipment is necessary, only a desire to have some good fun with good company. The morning starts with a cup of tea and a natter and then on to the more concentrated picture making and story telling. Intrigued? Come along and bring a friend. Thanks go to John McClean for making it all possible, in spite of the fact that he has recently broken his leg! Your commitment is a witness to us all, John. Fellowship Group - 2nd February 2017 The Fellowship Group will meet at 7.30pm on the first Thursday of the month. The theme for the evening is “Faith in pictures”. This course is designed to help ordinary people talk about what they believe. The heart of the course helps people identify a single picture or image that embodies something of their faith and shows how easy it can be to open up potentially life-changing conversations. This will run for our February meeting and continue into the May and June meetings - our lent course comes in between (see page 9 for further details). If you have never tried the Fellowship Group, this is a good beginning - helping you to put your faith in the context of your everyday life. A cup of tea and chat rounds off the evening. 4 Parish Register Christian Burial ‘ I am the Resurrection and the Life’ says the Lord 23rd December Phyllis May Withers (taken by the Curate at Brown Houston and Williamson’s Funeral Home) 23rd December Esther Stewart, Tudor Park 29th December Samuel Harper Stewart, Whitehead In Memoriam Phyllis May Withers - Phyllis Withers, wife of Ian Withers and mother of Johnny and Jamie Withers, passed away in hospital after a long illness on 19th December 2016. A celebration of her life took place on 23rd December in Brown Houston and Williamson’s Funeral Home and then on to Carnmoney Cemetery. Born in on 25th September 1948, Phyllis May Clarke was the youngest of seven siblings, Sadie, George, Shirley, Loretta, Maureen, Jennifer and last but not least, Phyllis. Starting work as a telephonist in Belfast, Phyllis quickly graduated to a post that would change her life forever - store detective in a well known Belfast store. It was in this capacity that she met her husband, Ian, who was visiting Belfast to inspect the security in the stores in which his firm had contracts. Phyllis subsequently moved to London and the couple married in Caxton Hall, Belgravia. The marriage was blessed with two sons, Johnny and Jamie. Add Ian’s children from a previous marriage, Debbie and Andrew, and you have the full family picture. Phyllis was good at whatever she undertook, from running the security in a casino in the Seychelles, or working as restaurant manager in Fox’s (the highest pub in Ireland), to running an immaculate home. She loved to work, and she worked hard. After living and working abroad for many years, the family settled in Steeple Road, Antrim, where Phyllis continued to work in the family business until she took ill. Phyllis was a vivacious, energetic, fun-loving woman. A wonderful home-maker, a brilliant cook, a good mother, an amazing grandmother. She was a thoughtful and a generous woman who deeply loved her family and friends. She has left a vacuum and will be greatly missed. We commend her husband, sons, grandchildren, brother, sisters, nieces and nephews and friends to your prayers. Esther Stewart - Esther May, wife of the late Jimmy Stewart and mother of David, Jim, Tommy, John and Michael, passed away on 18th December 2016, and after a celebration of her life in the Parish Church, was subsequently buried in Carnmoney Cemetery with her beloved husband, Jimmy. Esther was born in , one of three children. Sadly, one of Esther’s twin sisters, five years her junior, died at the age of five. It was a hard time for all the family, and tragedy struck again when Esther’s mother took ill when Esther was seventeen, and she nursed her until she died. Happier times were to come, and Esther, going to a dance with her friend Shelia (who remained a loyal and lifelong friend), met Jimmy Stewart. Jimmy spotted her at once and made sure he got the necessary introduction. They were married in St James’ in 1957 and spent 54 happy years together. The marriage was blessed with five sons, so Esther had her hands full looking after them all, although, not afraid of hard work she also had a job in the Civil Service. When the children were young and growing up, holidays were spent in a caravan in Castlerock where many happy memories were made. When the nest was empty, Esther and Jimmy enjoyed holidaying abroad. There was one memorable and happy holiday to Benidorm on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary, when Jimmy and Esther took the whole family with them. Family was everything to Esther, and she and Jimmy enjoyed their grandchildren when they came along, and the grandchildren loved them too, often not wanting to go home when home time came. Her great love for Jimmy made it impossibly difficult for Esther when he sadly suffered a fatal heart attack six years ago and her own health steadily deteriorated. Esther was not afraid to love and to receive love, and she has left a legacy of love with her family. We commend each one of them to your thoughts and prayers. Samuel Harper Stewart was born on 4th April 1926 to Jane Harper and Danny Stewart. He was one of six children. Sadly, Harper’s mum died when he was 14. Life was hard for the family, and Danny worked very hard to keep the family together. Attending school in Glengormley, Harper’s first job was as a van boy for the Whitewell Laundry. He had many tales to tell about that period of his life, but his abiding memory was that every day it cost him 1p to buy a barmbrack which he ate for his lunch. Not afraid of hard work, Harper also helped out as a delivery boy at a local butchers and also sold the Ireland Saturday Night newspaper. This was to facilitate his much loved trips to the cinema. When he was 16, he was accepted as an apprentice at Harland and Wolff, his father buying him an indenture for £5. However, after a short while he was desperate to join up and left Harland and Wolff. Even so, the indenture stood him in good stead, and when he finished his time in the RAF, he was able to go back and finish his apprenticeship. It was when he was in Stafford in the RAF, that he met the love of his life, Winnie. They married on St Valentines day 1948 and were blessed to have three sons, Eamon, Daniel and Neill. Sadly, their son Eamon died in 2008, and Winnie herself in 2015. Life was not the same for Harper when he lost Winnie - they had spent so much time together touring England, Wales and , first in a camper van, and then the locks and canals in a small cruiser. She was his life’s companion. Harper struggled valiantly with illness himself in the last few years and is now at peace. We commend his family, his two remaining sisters, his sons and grandchildren to your thoughts and prayers. Revision of Register of Vestry Members The Register of Vestry Members has to be revised annually during the month of February. This will be done at the start of the Vestry meeting on 7th February. A copy of the 2016 Register of Vestry members has been available for inspection in church for the preceding month from 8th January. If you are new to the parish in the last year and wish to be included on the Register, please obtain the appropriate registration form from the Church Wardens or inform them of any changes to be made. The Register of Vestry Members is the list of those entitled to vote at the Annual Easter Vestry and is open to all subscribing members of the parish over the age of 18. The names of those who have passed away in the preceding year and those who have ceased subscribing to the parish for at least a year will also be removed during the revision of the Register. Bishops’ Appeal Envelopes Bishops’ Appeal Envelopes are usually distributed with the December magazine, but unfortunately the envelopes were only delivered to me in mid January this year. I know that some people do like to give to the wider church by this means, so the envelopes have been included with this month’s magazine for anyone who wishes to donate in this way. Pastoral Care Team The next meeting of the Pastoral Care Team will be on Thursday 9th February. Please note, this is was postponed from Thursday 26th January due to a clash with a wedding preparation course.

Gift Day - Sunday 5th March The first Sunday in Lent is a very appropriate day for another Gift Day for the work and ministry of our church. The last Gift Day we held was in January 2014, and since we currently do not have a dedicated fundraising group, we do need to find other ways to highlight the continuing financial needs of the church. Almsgiving (or charitable giving as we would call it today), has always been one of the traditional Lenten disciplines, so a focus for that first Sunday on some sacrificial further giving for God’s work is a good way to enter the season of Lent. We hope to have special Gift Day envelopes available with the March magazine. Please consider carefully any additional donation you may be able to make on that day. 8 Lent 2017 Ash Wednesday this year falls on 1st March and will be marked with our usual service of Holy Communion for the start of Lent at 7pm. We will also be running a parish Lent course for five Thursdays in Lent, starting properly on Thursday 9th March and full details will be in the March magazine, together with further information on Holy Week. However, the course we will be following this year draws on themes from the film “The Theory of Everything”, which tells the story of the early life of Stephen Hawking and his marriage to his first wife, Jane, based on her own account of that time. So as an introduction to the course, we will show the DVD of this film in the Memorial Room on Thursday 2nd March beginning at 7.30pm. The film lasts just under two hours and is a fascinating and absorbing story in its own right. This will be in place of the March Fellowship Group and everyone, especially those hoping to attend the Lent course, will be very welcome to come along. The themes explored in the Lent course over five weeks under the title “The Mystery of Everything” will be “The experience of wonder”, “The enigma of weakness”, “The complexity of relationships”, “The encounter with frailty” and “The hope beyond brokenness”. They are challenging and thought provoking themes but are dealt with by the author of the course, Hilary Brand, in a very refreshing and interesting way. I am sure this will be an encouragement to all of us to deepen and re-invigorate our faith. Do take a chance on something new and a little different this Lent. At the very least, come and watch the film on Thursday 2nd March and make a decision from there. Sermon Series for Lent Sunday 5th March will also mark the start of an occasional sermon series for Lent on the theme ”What should I give up for Lent”? Instead of focussing on the more traditional physical items to “give up for Lent”, this will look at some of the emotional or spiritual attitudes that could be worth abandoning (and not just in Lent) as hindrances to our growth in faith. The first of these therefore on 5th March will be “Give up worry - trust in God”. Details of other topics will be in the March magazine. Bishop’s Lenten Talks - Advance Notice As he has done in previous years, our Bishop will also be giving two talks for Lent in three centres in the Diocese. The theme for this year is “Stewards of Creation”, and the dates and venues are as follows: Talk 1 - Tuesday 28th February, Parish Centre; Wednesday 8th March, Cathedral; Monday 13th March, Parish Centre. Talk 2 - Tuesday 21st March, Bushmills Parish Centre; Wednesday 29th March, Lisburn Cathedral; Monday 3rd April, Jordanstown Parish Centre. Each evening begins at 7.30pm and all are welcome, but for catering purposes, booking is recommended. To book your place, please contact the Bishop’s Secretary, Mrs Rosemary Patterson on 028 9082 8870. Healing Services Our normal midweek Healing Service will on Thursday 18th February at 8pm. There will, however, be a further opportunity to share in the ministry of healing with the laying on of hands in February during our main morning service at 11am on Sunday 26th February. During the ministry of healing at this service, please feel free to come for prayer, either for your own needs or for those of others, for whom you can stand proxy. Pray for the Following Families in February 5th Feb. - Brown (Queen’s A), Close, Conlane, Conn (Green R), Connolly (Swanston C), Cooke, Corry, Coulter, Courtney, Couser, Cranston. 12th Feb. - Brown (Braemar C), Conn (Osterley P), Connolly (B’henry A), Craig (T’patrick), Crawford, Creighton, Crilly, Cummins. 19th Feb. - Craig (Dunanney), Cummins (G’island), Davidson, Davis, Dawson, Dodds. 26th Feb. - Dennison, Dixon (J’town), Donaldson, Donley, Dougherty (Queen’s P), Douglas (Merville GV), Dudgeon, Dunlop, Earley, Eccles, Elliott, Esler. 9 Church of Ireland Men’s Society January’s meeting took many of us back to the days of the Saturday matinee as we had our Movie Night, complete with popcorn and sticky sweets. The film shown was Stagecoach, which was the one which started John Wayne on the road to fame and was thoroughly enjoyed by all there. The attendance was not as large as was expected, but it was very pleasing to see visitors, which included some women. Who said women don’t like westerns? The evening was so enjoyable that some people have asked if a Movie Night could not be made a regular event. Valentine’s Night, Tuesday 14th February, is the night that so many have been looking forward to as this is the date of the Annual Dinner run by the Men’s Society. This has now become a very popular annual event, and again, it will be held in the Templeton Hotel and will be £21.00 for three courses plus tea or coffee, which is a very reasonable price indeed. It will start at 7.00pm, and again, all friends and family are warmly invited. A sheet is at the back of the Church for names of those wishing to come along and also to make your choice from the menu. Trevor Gibb, Hon. Secretary

The Mothers’ Union Opening Service of Holy Communion was held on Tuesday 24th January at 2.00pm. It was conducted by the Reverend Carol Harvey and based on the theme for this year “Faith in Action”. Ann Wilkie kindly played the organ. Twenty Members attended the service, and five new members were enrolled - Anna Brandon, Gayle Hanna, Carol Higgins, Margaret McConnell and Nell McQueen. Following the Service, members met in the Church Hall for the first Branch Meeting of 2017, followed by afternoon tea. Members, old and new, were warmly welcomed and the Branch looks forward to the very interesting programme which has been compiled for the coming year. Anna Brandon, Branch Secretary Charity Commission for As the Church is now registered under the Charity Commission, we need to present our year end accounts according to their regulations. Every church group or organisation that has not already registered with the Charity Commission have to have their 2016 income, expenditure and balance held, recorded in the year end church accounts. The Mothers’ Union has been registered by their governing body, but I need all the other groups to contact me, to either confirm their registration number or to provide the 2016 income, expenditure and balance. My email [email protected] is probably the best way to contact me. It does not matter to the Commission if the group holds a few pounds or hundreds of pounds. Can I ask treasurers to contact me with the required information as soon as possible. Joyce Lardie, Hon Treasurer Recycling for Restoration Fund This month we raised £90 from clothes and £8 from books. Ensure clean clothing, including shoes (in pairs), hats, belts, handbags, bed linen and curtains (no duvets, pillows or cushions) are left in the church hall, and please do not put any other items, such as ornaments or books, in clothing bags.
