Re-Investigating Limehouse Chinatown: Kandinsky’S 2010 Limehouse Nights and Early 20Th-Century Oriental Plays
24 Lia Wen-Ching Liang National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan Re-investigating Limehouse Chinatown: Kandinsky’s 2010 Limehouse Nights and early 20th-century Oriental Plays Kandinsky’s production of Limehouse Nights, performed in 2010, presented a story about the interwar British society seen through the eyes of Thomas Burke, a police detective named after Thomas Burke who wrote extensively about London’s Limehouse Chinatown. By examining the trends and events in the years around 1918, which were extensively referred to in Limehouse Nights, this article discusses the Chinese images emerging from both Kandinsky’s production and the plays from the early 20th century. The analysis underlines the lasting influence of earlier China-related popular entertainment on later developments in theatre as well as on the British public perception of Chinese culture at home and abroad. Limehouse Nights thus provides a contemporary refraction of the converging elements in the early 20th century that at the same time raises questions about factuality, representation and cross-cultural understanding. Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television A Thesis Submitted to School of Geography, Politics, and Sociology For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Cheng Qian September, 2019 !i Negotiating Images of the Chinese: Representations of Contemporary Chinese and Chinese Americans on US Television ABSTRACT China's rise has led to increased interest in the representation of Chinese culture and identity, espe- cially in Western popular culture. While Chinese and Chinese American characters are increasingly found in television and films, the literature on their media representation, especially in television dramas is limited. Most studies tend to focus on audience reception with little concentration on a show's substantive content or style. This thesis helps to fill the gap by exploring how Chinese and Chinese American characters are portrayed and how these portrayals effect audiences' attitude from both an in-group and out-group perspective. The thesis focuses on four popular US based television dramas aired between 2010 to 2018. Drawing on stereotype and stereotyping theories, applying visual analysis and critical discourse analysis, this thesis explores the main stereotypes of the Chinese, dhow they are presented, and their impact. I focus on the themes of enemies, model minor- ity, female representations, and the accepted others. Based on the idea that the media can both con- struct and reflect the beliefs and ideologies of a society I ask how representational practice and dis- cursive formations signify difference and 'otherness' in relation to Chinese and Chinese Americans. I argue that while there has been progress in the representation of Chinese and Chinese Americans, they are still underrepresented on the screen. -
Marvel Studios Is Fast-Tracking Shang-Chi to Be Its First Superhero Movie Tentpole Franchise with an Asian Protagonist

The studio has set Chinese- American scribe Dave Callaham to write the screenplay, and Deadline hears Marvel is already looking at a number of Asian and Asian-American directors who want to do something as potentially monumental as was accomplished in Marvel’s first viable Best Picture candidate, Black Panther. That film tied into African and African American cultures and the sensibilities of its nearly all-black cast, with a black director in Ryan Coogler and writer in Joe Robert Cole. The goal here is to do a similar thing: introduce a new hero who blends Asian and Asian American themes, crafted by Asian and Asian American filmmakers. ADVERTISEMENT After Marvel Studios’ unparalleled decade of success following Iron Man, many have wondered how Kevin Feige’s next iterations of superhero franchises will distinguish themselves. Clearly an important theme will be ethnic diversity and inclusion, in front of and behind the camera. Callaham has strong credentials in the superhero and franchise-building realms and his own experiences as a Chinese-American will inform the Shang-Chi movie mythology, sources said. His recent work includes co-writing with Patty Jenkins and Geoff Johns the upcoming DC Warner Bros sequel Wonder Woman 1984, and he is writing Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. Maha Sura Singhanat Somdet Phra Bawornrajchao Maha Sura Singhanat (Thai: สมเด็จพระบวรราช Maha Sura Singhanat เจามหาสุรสิงหนาท; RTGS: Somdet Phra Boworaratchao Mahasurasinghanat) (1744–1803) was the younger brother of Phutthayotfa Chulalok, the first monarch of มหาสุรสิงหนาท the Chakri dynasty of Siam. As an Ayutthayan general, he fought alongside his brother in various campaigns against Burmese invaders and the local warlords. When his brother crowned himself as the king of Siam at Bangkok in 1781, he was appointed the Front Palace or Maha Uparaj, the title of the heir. During the reign of his brother, he was known for his important role in the campaigns against Bodawpaya of Burma. Some Chronological Observations on the Fu Manchu Series by Rick Lai In “A Question of Time” (The Rohmer Review, August 1917), Cay Van Ash did the fans of Sax Rohmer a great service by making insightful and accurate observations about the chronology of the Fu Manchu series. Many novels were not discussed in that important exercise of scholarship. In this article, I intend to primarily discuss five novels: The Golden Scorpion (1919), The Bride of Fu Manchu (1933), President Fu Manchu (1936), The Drums of Fu Manchu (1939), and The Island of Fu Manchu (1941). I will also critically re-evaluate Cay Van Ash’s contention that The Trail of Fu Manchu (1934) happened in early 1934. The Golden Scorpion is important novel in the continuity of the series because it contained the first appearance of the Ericksen Ray. Invented by a Norwegian scientist, the Ericksen Ray was a powerful weapon that could disintegrate matter. In The Golden Scorpion, the Norwegian scientist’s full name was given as Henrick Ericksen. The inventor was injected with a catalepsy-inducing drug by Fu Manchu’s colleague, Fo-Hi, and then abducted. The rest of the world believed Ericksen’s dead. Referring to Ericksen’s alleged demise, Fo-Hi made this comment in The Golden Scorpion (part IV, chap.1): “Then there was Ericksen, the most brilliant electrical expert of the century, who died suddenly last year.” The Ericksen ray was eventually reused by Rohmer in both The Drums of Fu Manchu and The Island of Fu Manchu. The University of Sydney Depictions of Thailand in Australian and Thai Writings: Reflections of the Self and Other Isaraporn Pissa-ard A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English March 2009 Abstract This thesis offers both an examination of the depiction of Thailand in Australian novels, short stories and poems written in the 1980s and after, and an analysis of modern Thai novels and short stories that reflect similar themes to those covered in the Australian literature. One Australian film is also examined as the film provides an important framework for the analysis of some of the short stories and novels under consideration. The thesis establishes a dialogue between Thai and Australian literatures and demonstrates that the comparison of Australian representations of Thailand with Thai representations challenges constructively certain dominant political and social ideologies that enhance conservatism and the status quo in Thailand. The author acknowledges that the discussion of the representations of Thailand in contemporary Australian novels and short stories needs to take into account the colonial legacy and the discourse of Orientalism that tends to posit the ‘East’ as the ‘West’’s ‘Other’. Textual analysis is thus informed by post-colonial and cross-cultural theories, starting from Edward Said’s powerful and controversial critique of Western representation of the East in Orientalism . The first part of the thesis examines Australian crime stories and shows how certain Orientalist images and perceptions persist and help reinforce the image of the East and its people as the antithesis of the West. -

Textual and Literary Representations of the Chinese in Twentieth-Century Thailand

Textual and Literary Representations of the Chinese in Twentieth-Century Thailand Thak Chaloemtiarana* King Vajiravudh famously published an essay titled Jews of the Orient in 1914 demon- izing the Chinese in Siam as ingrates and parasites. The local Chinese became the “Other Within” in the Thai nation that the king was trying to establish. Whether his reaction to the local Chinese was fueled by ire over the recent strike by the Chinese which paralyzed Bangkok, or a reflection of his English education and exposure to European anti-Semitism, is not the focus of my concern. My interest for this exercise is to study how the Chinese in Siam/Thailand are portrayed in Thai language texts, that is, prose fiction and non-fiction produced in the twentieth cen- tury (I will not include related areas such as movies, television drama, music, and cartoons). This study does not involve an exhaustive review of all texts but will focus on a few well-known and popular ones. I would like to know whether King Vajiravudh’s portrayal of the Chinese is reflected in subsequent literary production or muted by other realities that existed in Thai society, and how the production of texts on the local Chinese changed over time. More importantly, I am very curious to know how this issue is played out in neighboring countries, especially the Philip- pines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Burma, Laos, and Cambodia, countries where the “assimilation” of the Chinese into the majority culture happens in varying degrees.
