International Migrants Day

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with the University of Visit http://iamamigrant.org/ organized a debate on the topic of Migration "Towards better management and protection of migrants" to commemorate the International Migrants Day on the 18th December. In addition to the participation of IOM, this discussion was led by authors on the theme of Migration and Teacher-Researchers namely: Dr Hibo Moumin, Director of the Researcher Center of the University; Mr Rachid Hachi and Ms Farhiya Djama, authors and Dr Amina Said Chiré and Dr Abdi Houssein, Teacher-Researcher.

Consultation on the impact of irregular migration with the Community Leaders in Region

IOM Djibouti in collaboration with Dikhil Prefecture organized on 14 December 2016, a consultation session with community leaders from the Dikhil region on the impact of irregular migration. The aim of this consultation session with community leaders was to assess the impact of migration in the Dikhil region and to raise awareness of the human rights of migrants and their communities. Rights to protection. This awareness-raising program is funded by the Government of Japan through the project entitled “Strengthen Security in Djibouti and Safety of Migrants through Counter-Trafficking, Marine Safety and Emergency Assistance.

Evacuation operations from Yemen

IOM evacuation operations from Yemen continues in December and January 2017. On 5 December, 150 migrants arrived at the port of Djibouti and were transported to IOM’s center in Loyada where they have received food, non-food items and health assistance. The group included 145 adults and 5 children. On 12 December, 150 migrants reached the port of Djibouti after a boat journey from Yemen. They received assistance at the IOM’s center in Loyada and they left Djibouti on 16 and 19 December by flight.An IOM operations assistant escorted both groups during the whole journey to Addis Ababa by flight via Air Djibouti.

IOM Djibouti has assisted more than 4,700 migrants in 2016.

Evacuations is resuming on 10th of February 2017. More than 350 migrants are registered in the IOM center in Hodeidah.

New Projects within IOM Djibouti in 2017

LIVELIHOOD SUPPORT TO ERITREAN REFUGEES FOR SELF-RELIANCE AND LOCAL INTEGRATION IN DJIBOUTI CITY

- IOM will implement a livelihood project aiming at empowering the Local Community and Integrating the Eritrean Refugee Community in Djibouti City. This one year program will be implemented in Djibouti and is funded by the Belgium Government for the amount of 560,000 euros.

SETTING-UP AND STRENGTHENING OF MIGRATION RESPONSE CENTRES IN AND DJIBOUTI

- Expertise France, in the framework of the EU- funded project “Addressing mixed migration flows in Eastern Africa” has signed a 22 month project with IOM. The project will focus on strengthening Migration Response Centers. The total budget for the regional project is 1,051,000 euros.

Strengthening the capacities of the Government of Djibouti to better collect and analyse migration data and statistics

- This project is part of the IOM’s efforts to build national authorities’ and migration stakeholders’ capacities in particular to manage migration and built capacity of the Djiboutian border police and other national institutions collecting and analyzing data on migration; Funded by the IOM Development Fund (IDF) of 100,000 USD, this project will be implemented for one year.

STRENGTHENING THE CAPACITY AND ASSISTANCE TO STRANDED MIGRANTS EVACUATED FROM YEMEN AND OBOCK

In the context of the current crisis in Yemen, IOM Djibouti has received the sum of 1.2 Million USD from the US Government to assist in strengthening the capacity of Government of Djibouti to better respond to the Yemeni crisis and increase assistance to vulnerable migrants from Yemen and stranded in Obock.
