As we brainstormed, we went through a list of phrases and terms. “In your own words” is a common expression, but it can be interpreted in a variety of ways. The students of P.S. 122 represent a rich diversity of cultures and backgrounds as well as a diversity of voices and experiences. We were both curious and excited to see how these talented students would respond to our various warm up activities, writing prompts, and assignments. We were not disappointed, nor were we prepared for what they produced. The students took us on a journey where we time traveled to countries; they wrote haikus, elegies, epistles, fiction, and non-fiction. They wrote praise poems honoring where they are from and to the people/things they love. What you are holding is a body of work that our students began in November. We are happy that this anthology exists, if nothing else, as a testament to them. It contains their wittiness, humor, fears, hopes, concerns, imagination, and insights. Some of it is touching, personal, thoughtful, or serious, but it’s all them in their own words. P.S. 122 Writers, we are so proud of you! • Producers of Popular Science Web Videos – Between New Professionalism and Old Gender Issues
Producers of Popular Science Web Videos – Between New Professionalism and Old Gender Issues Jesús Muñoz Morcillo1*, Klemens Czurda*, Andrea Geipel**, Caroline Y. Robertson-von Trotha* ABSTRACT: This article provides an overview of the web video production context related to science communication, based on a quantitative analysis of 190 YouTube videos. The authors explore the main characteristics and ongoing strategies of producers, focusing on three topics: professionalism, producer’s gender and age profile, and community building. In the discussion, the authors compare the quantitative results with recently published qualitative research on producers of popular science web videos. This complementary approach gives further evidence on the main characteristics of most popular science communicators on YouTube, it shows a new type of professionalism that surpasses the hitherto existing distinction between User Generated Content (UGC) and Professional Generated Content (PGC), raises gender issues, and questions the participatory culture of science communicators on YouTube. Keywords: Producers of Popular Science Web Videos, Commodification of Science, Gender in Science Communication, Community Building, Professionalism on YouTube Introduction Not very long ago YouTube was introduced as a platform for sharing videos without commodity logic. However, shortly after Google acquired YouTube in 2006, the free exchange of videos gradually shifted to an attention economy ruled by manifold and omnipresent advertising (cf. Jenkins, 2009: 120). YouTube has meanwhile become part of our everyday experience, of our “being in the world” (Merleau Ponty) with all our senses, as an active and constitutive dimension of our understanding of life, knowledge, and communication. However, because of the increasing exploitation of private data, some critical voices have arisen arguing against the production and distribution of free content and warning of the negative consequences for content quality and privacy (e.g., Keen, 2007; Welzer, 2016).

Open Preview See a Problem? Ever have to bring a family member in for a Friday show and tell? Picture books about grandparents are hard to pull off — there is a fine line between heartwarming and way-too-sentimental. Published August 1st by Harry N. The Frank Show is the perfect example of a picture book that seems to have been written more for adults than for kids. We could not be more wrong. Other Editions 5. This would be a great method to learn more about the student's personal life, like their family's beliefs, values, and culture. In early to mid, Tic- Tac returned to the show from being fired. Average rating 3. Edit page. The book has a fab little message, even though the boy thinks Frank is boring others don't and he ends up being the star of the show. Official Sites. All he ever does is complain and talk about how things were in his day. It wasn't until the deaths of my grandparents when I inherited hundreds of pictures that I realized they had once been young. Grandpa Frank is cranky, old, likes things his way and is hard to understand for a kindergartner. The series was much more successful than the awkward mix of variety and drama. Great illustrations mixed in with collages. How the "older generation" engages the classroom and makes Grandfather Frank the hero of the day, makes this story a wonderful one children and adults will find loving and humorous.

Observatorio (OBS*), (2018), 054-075 1646-5954/ERC123483/2018 054 Special issue on The co-option of audiences in the attention economy Guest Editors: Ana Jorge (CECC-UCP), Inês Amaral (FLUC), David Mathieu (Roskilde University/ECREA Audiences and Reception Studies Section Chair) The food chain of YouTubers: engaging audiences with formats and genres Marju Himma-Kadakas*, Allan Rajavee*, Maarja-Liis Orgmets*, Linda Eensaar*, Ragne Kõuts-Klemm* * Department of Social Studies, University of Tartu, Estonia Abstract Traditional news media are not engaging young audiences and there has been a decline in the number of consumers of traditional media. The main news sources for teenagers in Europe and North-America are social media and friends. Our research project outlines YouTubers’ content production strategies in order to apply them in conventional news content production to attract young audiences. In this study we profiled the top YouTubers in the world, in Europe and in Estonia based on their profiles, networks, topics, genres and formats. We developed a model of analysis based on the uses and gratifications approach by Katz et al. (1974), and McQuail (2000). This framework was used in the standardised content analysis of YouTube videos. The results present the “food chain” of different levels of YouTubers; the “food chain” refers to the copying of innovative ideas from less experienced peers, while promoting their content. The food chain also shows how most popular YouTubers generate new production practices and discursive genres. There are noticeable variations in the diversity of genres and formats between different levels of YouTubers. Diversity of content is important for sustaining and increasing audiences.

  • Online, on the Couch, Or on the Move: the Contours of the Evolving
Online, On the Couch, or On the Move: The Contours of the Evolving Video Market. Morgan Taylor Kate Stirling Econ 411 December 20th, 2013 2 Abstract This paper examines the impact of YouTube on the video content market. Previous research is examined to determine the scope of the online migration thus far and its effect on the traditional video market (television). Analysis of YouTube’s user data and earnings reveals that YouTube has a monopolistically competitive market structure. YouTube’s user-friendly environment grants consumers greater control over when, how and what they watch. As the leader of the online market, research indicates YouTube’s competitive characteristics are moving the larger media market to a more competitive environment in which consumers are given a larger range of media options at lower prices. Keywords: YouTube, online video market, Media market, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, user-generated content, branded-content 3 Introduction Remember that time when we all gathered around the family TV and watched that one show almost everyone else in America with a TV was watching? Neither do I. The times in which everybody watched the same small handful of programs ended decades ago. The home- viewing audience became fragmented with the advent of cable TV, and then even more so with the arrival of online viewing platforms such as YouTube, Netflix and other online sites (both legal and otherwise). These technological innovations have given consumers more power over what, when and how they watch video content. They are no longer bound to the schedule printed in the weekly TV guide.

The study focused on analyzing YouTube channels that succeeded in growing largest recurring audiences (most sub- scribed).
