Reiff, Co-chair This dissertation explores the unique, significant, and sometimes contentious relationship that existed between British Jewish author and activist Israel Zangwill and the Jewish community of the United States of America from 1892-1926 and beyond. Employing a broad definition of prophets and prophecy based on the works of prominent theologians, anthropologists, sociologists, and others, this dissertation argues that Zangwill’s vision of America as a new, diasporic cultural and religious center was so significant that we may reasonably characterize him as a prophet of American Judaism. This dissertation carefully studies Zangwill’s prophecy and the American Jewish reaction to Zangwillian thought to better understand both the nature of Zangwill’s thinking and the American Jewish community’s reception of that thought. In so doing it provides important insight ii into Zangwill’s prophetic vision for America, as well as the American Jewish community’s ideological divisions, limited tolerance for criticism, and anxieties over American toleration of Jews and Judaism in the Progressive era, the 1920s, and beyond. It places the narrative of Zangwill and America within the context of American Jewish intellectual history, as well as a broader, late-nineteenth-early- twentieth-century, trans-diasporic discourse on the prospective significance of America in Jewish life and culture. Of equal importance, this study carefully explores the phenomenon of modern fame as an important component in Zangwill’s popularity and legitimacy in American Jewish discourse. It grants particular focus to the role that Israel Zangwill’s American public played in determining the nature of Zangwill’s fame, noting the ways in which Americans helped establish the late British Jewish author’s reputation as an expert on Jews and Jewish affairs despite the fact that Zangwill preferred to be known as an artist unbound by the strictures of religion, nation, or tribe. In its conclusion, this dissertation considers the ways in which American Jews have written about and discussed Zangwill since his death. It notes the proclivity of twentieth-century, American Jewish intellectuals to reduce Zangwill’s biography to a synecdochic device illustrating the supposed painful divisions of the modern Jewish personality, and it argues that this study, in conjunction with the recent works of literary scholars Edna Nahshon and Meri-Jane Rochelson, signals a new direction in the study of Israel Zangwill—an approach which recognizes his significant contributions to Anglo Jewish letters and discourse in his own day and in our contemporary historical moment, as well. iii This dissertation of Erik Marc Greenberg is approved.     Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The purpose of this group is to gather interested scholars together and review works in progress authored by members of the group and distributed and read prior to the AJS meeting. 2006 will be the sixth year of a formal meeting within which we have exchanged ideas and shared our work with peers in a casual, constructive environment. This Works in Progress Group is open to all scholars working in any discipline within the field of modern Jewish studies. SARNA The year r856 was a vintage year for brilliant Jewish lawyers named Louis. On November 13, r8s6, Louis Brandeis was born in Louisville, Kentucky. One month later, on December 14, r856, Louis Marshall was born in Syracuse, New York. Louis and Louis were both first-generation Americans, born of central European Jewish parents. They both compiled stellar academic records. They both went on to have a profound affect on American law. Both were considered for seats on the U.S. Supreme Court, although only one of them made it.' And both became eminent leaders in American Jewish life. Yet while both men earned enormous respect within the Jewish and general communities, they never became friends and rarely worked to­ gether. They differed religiously, philosophically, and politically. They approached Judaism, America, and even the law itself from sharply different perspectives. The parents of Louis Brandeis and Louis Marshall arrived in America at approximately the same time in the middle of the nineteenth century.' Brandeis' parents hailed from Prague, Marshall's father from Baden and his mother from Wiimemberg.     BERNHARD FELSENTHAL: THE ZIONIZATION OF A RADICAL REFORM RABBI Leon A. Jick This article traces Bernhard Felsenthal's ideological and institutional odyssey from extreme radical Reform to committed Zionism. In theface of theoverwhelming opposition of his Reform colleagues, Felsenthal endorsed and embraced the nascent Zionist movement and devoted his final years to its support. The last half of the nineteenth century was a time of turbulent ideological ferment. Amidst radical social, economic and political change, new ideologies sprouted and fractured into competing factions. Buffeted by the tides of unanticipated consequences indi vidual thinkers and activists frequently changed their positions and their affiliations. Moses Hess moved from a variety of socialisms to proto-Zionism, and Leon Pinsker from Russian assimilation to Jew ? ish nationalism. Nussan Birnbaum at one time a chief secretary to Herzl, drifted from Zionism to become general secretary of Agudat a as a en Yisrael with stopover diaspora nationalist route. Herzl himself was a convert to Zionism.     “To Be an American”: How Irving Berlin Assimilated Jewishness and Blackness in his Early Songs A document submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS in the Performance Studies Division of the College-Conservatory of Music 2011 by Kimberly Gelbwasser B.M., Northwestern University, 2004 M.M., University of Cincinnati, 2006 Committee Chair: Steven Cahn, Ph.D. Abstract During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, millions of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Mediterranean countries arrived in the United States. New York City, in particular, became a hub where various nationalities coexisted and intermingled. Adding to the immigrant population were massive waves of former slaves migrating from the South. In this radically multicultural environment, Irving Berlin, a Jewish- Russian immigrant, became a songwriter. The cultural interaction that had the most profound effect upon Berlin’s early songwriting from 1907 to 1914 was that between his own Jewish population and the African-American population in New York City. In his early songs, Berlin highlights both Jewish and African- American stereotypical identities. Examining stereotypical ethnic markers in Berlin’s early songs reveals how he first revised and then traded his old Jewish identity for a new American identity as the “King of Ragtime.” This document presents two case studies that explore how Berlin not only incorporated stereotypical musical and textual markers of “blackness” within two of his individual Jewish novelty songs, but also converted them later to genres termed “coon” and “ragtime,” which were associated with African Americans.

    Now and Forever — A Conversation with Israel Zangwill (New York: Robert M. McBride & Co., 1925), 156 pp. Another "by Jews, for Jews" special, from the Memory Hole. The tone of works such as this is quite different from what is presented in the media for general (i.e., "gentile") consumption. A strange little book I picked up. Samuel Roth discusses the state of Jewry with Israel Zangwill. Zangwill was a playwright who coined the phrase "melting pot" and who wrote a standard "refutation" of the Protocols . It deals with how Jews see themselves -- and how they think others see them. It's funny to see two Jews pretending to be "against" one another in a debate -- like two ants from the same anthill. All the extreme arrogance and subjectivity of Jews is displayed here. Jews are distinctive in the world in raising such things to near hallucinogenic levels. Compare with Hosmer and Marcus Eli Ravage. Some of the most incredible (or oddly candid) statements I highlighted in red as I went thru' the text. Jews say "we're special because we remember" -- their way of saying they institutionalize trans-generational ethnic hatred as a way of separating themselves from the rest of human society. My favorite part -- Roth compares St. Paul with Trotsky! He further says that Jews are the only real Christians, and that "Jesus preached of Jews and for Jews". He says that Jesus hated the world (when he really just hated Jews -- but Jews are "the world", according to them: all others are "not of Adam"). But we mustn't forget that this Problem is primarily an ethnic, and not a religious, one.
