2019 NEAA OPENING DAY The North End Athletic Association celebrated the 2019 Opening Day of Baseball on Sunday, April 28th at Langone Park. Four games were played on the Dom Campochiaro Field. The day started off with the North End Against Drugs sponsored Minor League program playing the first game. This was fol- lowed by NEAA’s young lady’s softball program run by Chuck Bilikas. The Lady Cubs and Lady Cardinals put on a show for the fans in attendance. At 1:00 p.m., Opening Day Ceremonies were held with NEAA honoring St. Anthony’s Feast Society on their 100 Anniversary of the Feast in Boston. The Saint Anthony’s Feast Society has been a sponsor of NEAA Baseball for over 50 years! As of now, 94 percent of chil- dren in this country are vaccinated, but the number of cases is growing at epidemic numbers. Once we reach 1,000 cases, we are going to have lots of trouble for the un-vaccinated children anywhere. So far this year, we have seen 695 cases in 22 states as of two weeks ago. No human virus is more infectious than measles. If you or your children are un-vaccinated, please get vaccinated. We need to contain this outbreak before it grows and eventually starts killing its victims. Think about this. If you have questions, go get the answers you need. When I was a little kid, I got all those childhood things like measles, mumps, and chicken pox. Thank God, I never got the whooping cough. It tired my mother out taking care of me and my little brother. I got it. He got it. I got it. He got it. Must have felt like a bad dream for my mom. You can bet, if more vaccines were available my mom would have made sure we both got those shots and quickly. Pete Buttigieg Shows Up in Boston Area Mayor Pete Buttigieg running for president showed up at a Somerville fundraiser on April 30th and criticized the White House, he talked about policing, housing and gun reform, and touched on the gig economy with moderator Brandon Victor Dixon, the Hamilton actor who called out Vice President Mike Pence during a performance in 2016. The Friends of the North End Library continue to sponsor high interest programs for the North End community. At our most recent offering, a rapt audience of over 50 people gathered at the North End Library to hear the entertaining history of Scollay Square. Author David Kruh discussed his book Always Something Doing: Boston’s Infamous Scollay Square by presenting a comprehensive photo journey of the area both past and present. He began by reaching back to its early origins, through its colorful era as an entertainment mecca, to its current incarnation as Government Center/City Hall Plaza. In the second half of the 1800s, the Square was quite refi ned. It was home to Tremont Row — housing high-end shops, dance studios, pho- tography studios, and dentists (where ether was fi rst used in dental practice) — and the Sears Crescent Building.
