*Deadline 01/05/16: M.A. Design & Contemporary Crafts. Dear colleagues, Hereby I have the honour to forward to you the announcement about a new English-speaking M.A. course opening this year at the Estonian Academy Of Arts "Design & (Contemporary) Crafts”. Department Of Glass is glad to accept interested people from all over the world to apply to this 2-year course in Tallinn. Please do distribute this information among the perspective applicants in your country! Sincerely yours, Mare Saare. Mob: 00 372 56 917 079. Email: [email protected] . The Estonian Academy Of Arts is excited to announce a new international Master's programme in Design & Crafts. The two-year, English-language programme is designed for artists and designers with the ambition to develop and enrich their individual practice with cross-disciplinary investigations. E.A.A. encourages bold experimentation, and students are able to take courses and workshops outside of their specialisations. The Estonian Academy Of Arts values its low student to professor ratio, which creates a more personal, one-on-one approach to instruction. The Design & Crafts M.A. programme prepares students for professional practice and helps them identify their own positions as Artists/Designers. The students enter a common programme but also select a specialisation: ceramics, glass art, jewellery and blacksmithing, textile design, leather art and design or fashion design. Students who commence studies in the Design & Crafts programme remain closely connected with their chosen discipline. Regardless of the specialisation, the M.A. programme focuses on collaboration. This includes group tasks that cross disciplines, where students with different backgrounds and study experience work together. A significant part of the coursework takes the form of workshops (supervised partly by international lecturers), which aim to break routine and provide inspiration. The head of programme is Prof. Tanel Veenre, and tuition is €1,500.00 per year. We welcome applications for the Autumn 2016 semester until May 1st., 2016. For more information about the programme and to apply, visit Website: artun.ee/masters/design-and-crafts or contact Email: [email protected] . Master Of Arts in Design & Crafts. North Lands Creative Glass 2016 20th. Anniversary Masterclasses. 02/08/1608/08/16: ‘Rematerialisation Of Systems’: Master Class with El Ultimo Grito. In this workshop we would like to explore both the potential that glass could have to change the way in which we perceive, and approach a technological device, in this case a radio, and how it could be an intrinsic part of its technical attributes, for example how sound is produced, or how the switch might work by using water poured in the glass vessel, as the conductor of electricity. This class is open to applicants from all backgrounds and will be supported by a glassmaker in the hot shop, who can work from drawings and instructions. If you are a glass blower it is possible make your own components. Website: www.northlandsglass.com/whats-on/rematerialisation-of-systems-kraftwerks/ 22/08/1630/08/16: ‘Casting In Nature’: Master Class With Colin Reid. Working with kiln-cast glass we will use the wonderful landscape and nature around North Lands as the source of form, texture and inspiration from which to cast. We will explore a variety of moulding techniques to translate natural forms into cast glass, working both outside in the landscape and in the studio. Previous experience helpful but not essential. Bring out clothes, this will be a messy workshop. Website: www.northlandsglass.com/whats-on/casting-in-nature-master-class-with-colin-reid/ 22/08/1630/08/16: ‘Reinventing The Sphere’: Master Class With David King. In this class, glassblowing skills will be developed through repetition and thoughtful analysis of the process. Artists, designers and glass makers alike will benefit from a back to basics approach with one on one technical support and no previous experience needed. Students will establish a strong foundation by learning how to 'set up' their bubbles in the Venetian style. Confidence gained through traditional vessel making will lead to exploration of the sculptural possibilities of the blown form. Website: www.northlandsglass.com/whats-on/reinventing-the-sphere/ 02/09/1610/09/16. ‘Crazy Paving’ Master Class with Richard Wentworth: Richard Wentworth is interested in how the world is put together. He has definite views on how we learn and creates good conditions to do so. It is important to be open to what happens, to give attention to the moment, to people, to the arrangement of things, in situations there is absurdity and in the encounter, pleasure. Wentworth has a way of piecing together, finding connections between people, skills and places. During these nine days you will take a journeys in the rural landscape and urban sites of the region, but expect to leave the track. Wentworth understands an artist’s working practice to be essentially about trying things out, finding other ways of doing things. What does it mean to look at something and understand it? Everywhere we can be impressed and inquisitive, from the moment we wake up and ask 'how were my shoes made?' The class will involve sharing skills and knowledge with the group. There will be introductions to skills and support with glass blowing, and across the glass studios. This research will be supported by drawing and photography. 01/06/16: British Society Of Master Glass Painters Discussion Day. Wednesday 1st. June 09:45–16:00. Glaziers Hall, 9 Montague Close, London. SE1 9DD. ‘Stained Glass In Contemporary Culture - Exploring Creative Partnerships To Generate And Sustain New Work'. Speakers: Andrew Moor, Sasha Ward, ‘Teepee Glass’ (Maria Fagan, Brett Manley & Wendy Stone) and Helga Reay Young. The annual B.S.M.G.P. Discussion Day, whilst open to all, is particularly intended for stained glass practitioners; student, amateur and professional, giving an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas based on a program of topical presentations. This year the program, planned by Caroline Swash F.M.G.P., herself an experienced teacher and practitioner, draws together a mix of speakers, all successful contemporary glass artists, who will explore the ways in which collaboration can enable and enhance new work. With the loss of so many large studios, increasingly artists work in isolation meaning that such relationships between artist and client, artist and a larger studio or affiliation to a group of likeminded individuals becomes pivotal to their success. The day is kindly hosted by the Worshipful Company Of Glaziers, the day after their annual Stevens Competition Prize Giving, in the hope that as many students as possible will take the opportunity to attend whilst in London. Tickets £25.00 or for students and tutors £15.00 including sandwich lunch. For further information visit Website: www.bsmgp.org.uk . Email: [email protected]

I am helping a friend to find a home for a large collection of coloured glass for stained glass purposes (rather than fusing or slumping). The owner used to make reproduction tiffany-style lamps, but has stopped and needs the space in her home. There are four chests of drawers with each drawer full of a particular colour range, please see attached images. A rough estimate is that the glass is worth £3- 4000 (probably more), but we would like it to go to a good home fairly quickly so are willing to negotiate a lower selling price! This would be ideal for a college course or the like. The sale will be properly invoiced by the seller. The buyer would have to collect from Esher, Surrey. If interested please contact me via email to discuss. There are more pictures and some tools that can be thrown in, details will be provided. This will be an absolute bargain for someone! Email: [email protected] . Thanks, Liam Reeves.

For Sale: Model B7 - 12" Bench Polisher or Grind. The B7 is meant for either diamond grinding or polishing. The one-inch mounting shaft, washers and nuts are all solid stainless steel and the wheel and belt guards are thick molded plastic so that rust will never be a factor. The shaft ball bearings are oversized, sealed and permanently lubricated. The motor is the best available-a Baldor "industrial-type" with ball bearings. Every aspect of this machine is over-designed to create a machine that will last trouble-free. Features: As a Polishing Station: For polishing, the B7 is fitted with 12" X 3" prepolish and final polish wheels. The traditional choice for a prepolish wheel is cork. A pumice slurry is applied to this wheel at frequent intervals. The final polish wheel is a wool felt. A cerium oxide slurry is applied to this wheel. Wheel Speeds: On any machine of this type, wheel sizes should be the same on both sides to minimize vibration. The B7 comes with a variety of pulley combinations which will generate practically any shaft speed between 320 and 3450 RPM and the pulleys can easily be changed in the field. For Polishing-Irrespective of whether the machine is to be used with synthetic or cork prepolish, the felt dictates the speed. Therefore, with 12" wheels, the shaft speed is set at 600 RPM. "Grinding" wheels are NOT supplied with this sale but are easily fitted to become a versatile grinder. As a Production Grinding Station: The B7 is the ideal machine for grinding inside curves (or concave surfaces) using 8 or 10 inch diamond wheels. The large 20" separation between the wheels allows two operators to work on the machine at the same time. The machine's biggest advantage over other units is its small and unobtrusive belt guard, which does not interfere with the work piece regardless of its shape. Motor: This 1/2HP motor is an "industrial" quality 115V Baldor with ball bearings. Wheel Guards: These guards will accept wheels as large as 12". They are moulded polyethylene and come with sponge retainer and sponge. A guard can be removed in less than a minute for easy wheel changes. NEWS (General).

*‘Art In Action 2016: Our Final Show! Dear Fellow Artists, Visitors, Volunteers and Supporters, I write to you with a heavy heart, and knowing that I will never satisfy you, to try to explain why Art In Action is to come to rest after the show in July this year. You should know that Art In Action is wholly supported by the School Of Economic Science, the charity that owns Waterperry House and Gardens. Almost all of the key volunteers who staff this wonderful show are members of the organisation or are connected with it in some way. The amazing thing about these volunteers is the way they give so fully to looking after the show, looking after you artists and all the visitors. For them it is a spiritual practice. To give with no thought of reward. This is what helps to give Art In Action its amazing atmosphere. However, staffing the show is becoming increasingly difficult and we need to look after people carefully. A number of the key staff are getting older and it is proving very difficult to replace them. At the same time, there has been an increase in similar events, many inspired by Art In Action, and the numbers of visitors have dropped to a point where the show has made a financial loss in recent years, despite good weather. When I first took on the job of Steward of Waterperry two years ago and used to walk around the estate with Bernard Saunders, the man who started Art In Action, he told me that the time would come soon to let it come to rest. I laughed and said, “Thanks a bunch” for landing me with that one! Donald Lambie, the senior tutor of the School Of Economic Science, and I have discussed the future of Art In Action at great length and in detail and this decision was made motivated only by care for others. As with many art-works, it is difficult to know just when to stop. Sometimes it is the money, sometimes you just run out of time. I am sure you, like me, have sometimes overworked a piece and wished you had let it be. The best time to stop is when you feel like the decision is really not your own but is made for you and it just feels right. This is the fortieth year since the show started and it is the year of Bernard Saunders’ passing away. It feels right. Although it is a pause, it is full of potential also. The School Of Economic Science will continue to support the arts and my vision is that Waterperry develop as a centre for the arts in the years to come. Thank you for all the wonders you have shared, the joy you have given and the mysteries you have illuminated over the last forty years. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. As for this year: let’s make it the best show ever! With best wishes to you all, Simon Buchanan – Organiser of Art In Action. Tel: 01844 338 085.
