Medler INTRODUCTION HIS bulletin attempts to present as accurate and complete a T guide to the leafhoppers of Minnesota as possible within the limits of the material available for study. It is realized that cer- tain groups could not be treated completely because of the lack of available material. Nevertheless, it is hoped that in its present form this treatise will serve as a convenient and useful manual for the systematic and economic worker concerned with the forms of the upper Mississippi Valley. In all cases a reference to the original description of the species and genus is given. Keys are included for the separation of species, genera, and supergeneric groups. In addition to the keys a brief diagnostic description of the important characters of each species is given. Extended descriptions or long lists of references have been omitted since citations to this literature are available from other sources if ac- tually needed (Van Duzee, 1917). -

GORTA Department of Geology, Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio 43403 INTRODUCTION It is almost 20 years since the first General Index to The Ohio Journal of Science, which covered the issues from the beginning (1900) through 1950, was published (Miller, E. M., 1953, published by The Ohio State University and The Ohio Academy of Science). It is time, therefore, for another general index, dealing with issues appearing since 1950. This is that index. Unlike the first index, there is no separate listing of full references by author; rather, this is simply a combining of all the entries from all the yearly indexes from 1951 through 1972. Basically these original entries remain unchanged here, though mistakes found in a few were corrected, and some have been slightly reworded in order to fit better into this multiple listing. Entries relating to book reviews occur only for the years of 1963 through 1970, because book reviews were not included in the earlier indexes. It should also be noted that, though a few of these books represent merely a reprinting of older, out-of-date books, these books are not so identified in the entries in this index. Preparation of this index has been mostly handled by Miss Christine M. Gorta, under the direction of Dr. Jane L. Forsyth, Editor of The Ohio Journal of Science from 1964 to 1973, but others have also contributed to this work—mainly Misses Lauran Boyles and Laura Witkowski—contributers whose efforts are gratefully acknowledged. -

Introduction The Pan-American genus Gypona Germar, 1821 (Cicadellidae: Iassinae: Gyponini) includes about 200 described species (DeLong 1980). Most of the species are only described based on the male, and when the female is known there is only reference to the sternite VII as the genital structures (Coelho et al. 2001, Azevedo-Filho and Carvalho 2003). A new leafhopper genus in the tribe Gyponini is proposed based on Magnana splendida gen. nov. et sp. nov., from the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Representatives of the new genus differ from other genera in the tribe mainly by the large body size, the narrow head, moderately produced anterad, the rugose crown and frons, the ventral surface of metatarsomere I with two double rows of setae, and the aedeagus bearing atrial processes. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided, as well as remarks on the morphology of other gyponine genera. Keywords. Auchenorrhyncha; Iassinae; Neotropical region; Taxonomy. The hemipteran suborder Auchenorrhyncha is a highly diverse, ecologi- cally and agriculturally important group of primarily phytophagous insects which has been a source of phylogenetic contention for many years. Here, we have used tran- scriptome sequencing to assemble 2139 orthologues from 84 auchenorrhynchan species representing 27 families; this is the largest and most taxonomically comprehensive phy- logenetic dataset for this group to date. We used both maximum likelihood and multi- species coalescent analyses to reconstruct the evolutionary history in this group using amino acid, nucleotide, and degeneracy-coded nucleotide orthologue data. Although many relationships at the superfamily level were consistent between analyses, several differing, highly supported topologies were recovered using different datasets and recon- struction methods, most notably the differential placement of Cercopoidea as sister to either Cicadoidea or Membracoidea. -

Sieber September 2020 Copyright © Miranda Galey 2020 Abstract Bat fecal samples are a rich source of ecological data for bat biologists, entomologists, and microbiologists. Feces collected from individual bats can be used to profile the gut microbiome using microbial DNA and to understand bat foraging strategies using arthropod DNA. We used eDNA collected from bat fecal samples to better understand bats as predators in the context of their unique gut physiology. We used high through- put sequencing of the COI gene and 16S rRNA gene to determine the diet composition and gut microbiome composition of three bat species in Minnesota: Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis lucifugus and M. septentrionalis. In our analysis of insect prey, we found that E. fuscus consistently foraged for a higher diversity of beetle species compared to other insects. We found that the proportional frequency of tympanate samples from M. septentrionalis and M. lucifugus was similar, while M. septentrionalis consistently preyed more often upon non-flying species. We used the same set of COI sequences to determine presence of pest species, rare species, and insects not previously observed in Minnesota. We were able to combine precise arthropod identification and the for- aging areas of individually sampled bats to observe possible range expansion of some insects. The taxonomic composition of the bat gut microbiome in all three species was found to be consistent with the composition of a mammalian small intestine. -

Construction of a 80 ha (4,550 ha with safety fan) Multi-Purpose Training Range (MPTR) began in 1998, and supports training for military vehicles and dismounted infantry, with a variety of stationary and moving targets. This study provides a baseline for long term monitoring and evaluation of natural communities to assess the impacts of construction of, and training in, the MPTR. We assessed both aquatic macroinvertebrate and terrestrial insect community diversity, abundance, and richness and similarity at a series of study plots using quantifiable, repeatable and replicated methods. These data provide baseline data facilitating long-term monitoring and assessment as a measure of ecosystem health, and allow evaluation of relationships between community composition and habitat metrics. -
