1 Introduction
1Introduction The expanding world of Children’s Literature Studies Peter Hunt So what good is literary theory? Will it keep our children singing? Well perhaps not. But understanding something of literary theory will give us some understanding of how the literature we give to our children works. It might also keep us engaged with the texts that surround us, keep us singing even if it is a more mature song than we sang as youthful readers of texts. As long as we keep singing, we have a chance of passing along our singing spirit to those we teach. (McGillis 1996: 206) Children’s literature ‘Children’s literature’ sounds like an enticing field of study; because children’s books have been largely beneath the notice of intellectual and cultural gurus, they are (apparently) blissfully free of the ‘oughts’: what we ought to think and say about them. More than that, to many readers, children’s books are a matter of private delight, which means, perhaps, that they are real literature – if ‘literature’ consists of texts which engage, change, and provoke intense responses in readers. But if private delight seems a somewhat indefensible justification for a study, then we can reflect on the direct or indirect influence that children’s books have, and have had, socially, culturally, and historically. They are overtly important educationally and commer- cially – with consequences across the culture, from language to politics: most adults, and almost certainly the vast majority of those in positions of power and influence, read chil- dren’s books as children, and it is inconceivable that the ideologies permeating those books had no influence on their development. -

Dissertation Advisor: Professor Maria Tatar Christina Phillips Mattson Abstract Children’s Literature Grows Up proposes that there is a revolution occurring in contemporary children’s fiction that challenges the divide that has long existed between literature for children and literature for adults. Children’s literature, though it has long been considered worthy of critical inquiry, has never enjoyed the same kind of extensive intellectual attention as adult literature because children’s literature has not been considered to be serious literature or “high art.” Children’s Literature Grows Up draws upon recent scholarship about the thematic transformations occurring in the category, but demonstrates that there is also an emerging aesthetic and stylistic sophistication in recent works for children that confirms the existence of children’s narratives that are equally complex, multifaceted, and worthy of the same kind of academic inquiry that is afforded to adult literature. -

Buff Immigrant domestic workers are perceived as highly exploitable and expendable employees, yet they are entangled in a very complex global exchange of services. The main purpose of this study will be to revise existing knowledge and assumptions about the female migrant service sector, especially within the field of domestic and care labor, by comparing the work of au pairs with housecleaners. -

Adventure Nannies Glossary Babysitter | A babysitter is someone who is paid occasionally to watch another family’s children for a set amount of time, often in the evenings. Babysitters are often friends of the family or neighbors and do not typically have any formal childcare training or experience (although anyone who is working as a babysitter should have up-to-date infant and child CPR and First Aid certification for the safety of all parties.) Career Nanny | A career nanny is a nanny who has been working professionally as a nanny for 5 or more years and has dedicated themselves to continuing to be a nanny for the foreseeable future, with no plans to change professions. Some career nannies invest in their training and development to continue fine-tuning their skills and staying up to date on child research and philosophies, which we strongly encourage of anyone working as a professional nanny, but some career nannies do not. The term ‘career nanny’ means simply that someone has been working as a nanny for a significant amount of time. Fully-staffed | A fully-staffed home can consist of any number of staff, including but not limited to housekeepers, executive housekeepers, household managers, personal assistants, a chief of staff, gardeners, private chefs, drivers, and security details. In many fully-staffed roles, the nanny will be working on a team with other nannies and most of their direct interactions will be with a lead nanny or a household manager, not with the parents (sometimes referred to as ‘principals’) directly as often as a smaller-staffed home. -

The Turn of the Screw Alyssa, Caitlin, Kara, Kylie Intro Because these are the introductory chapters to the novel, there is a great deal of foreshadowing taking place. Some of the foreshadowing is easily detectable as such; however there are certain subtleties that are far less obvious unless one is aware of later happenings in the story. This passage also holds foreshadowing of the less blatant nature. One instance has been quoted above, the lines beginning with “a trap—“ and ending with the governess alluding to the fact that she is indeed “excitable.” This brand of foreshadowing plays to the question that readers often have at the end of this novel: whether the governess is sane or not. There are multiple instances in these beginning chapters when the governess refers to her own mental instabilities, but only in passing, brushing them off as if they were normal in discrepancies. Rereading this section of the text, however, gives emphasis to these understated moments of admitted mental stress and “excitability.” Chapter 1 Summary -C1: Through the viewpoint of the Governess, telling recollection of riding in a coach...riding to Bly: her newfound place of employment -C1: Meets Flora and Mrs. Grose and Flora right away "A little girl...a civil person who dropped me as decent a curtsy as if [she] had been the mistress." - C1: Getting acquainted with Mrs. Grose and is indirectly becoming acquainted with Flora. -C1: Allusion to Miles, Flora gives the governess a tour of Bly, ambiguity of conversations. "No; it was a big, ugly, antique but convenient house,embodying a few features of a building still older , half replaced and half utilized in which I had the fancy of our being almost as lost as a handful of passengers in a great drifting ship. -

For a good socio-emotional development of preschool children, the teacher’s activity with children should include activities or items that pre-schooler children interact with adults. By attending the kindergarten, the child is faced with new situations, changing his way of life according to the new requirements, here the child will find more complex and better organized educational support. However, the family has a fundamental role in raising and educating the child by finding and choosing the most effective and qualitative education systems that will be molded on their own children. The educator – parent relationship is a primary direct impact on child development. The relationship between parent and educator will influence the pattern of behaviour that the child will admire and imitate. Micro research aimed to capture the way that parents appreciate / do not appreciate the quality in preschool institution. Also looking into the importance of partnership in kindergarten through the goals, objectives and activities to encourage child development. The New Child: The Birth of a Psychological Subject Jutta Ahlbeck, University of Turku, Finalnd The paper examines changing notions of childhood in Finland in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Following scholars who argue that children and childhood started gaining intense medical and psychological attention in the mid-1900th century, the paper scrutinizes when and how notions of children’s psychological development entered Finnish scientific discourses. Whereas children’s somatic health (infant mortality, contagious diseases, malnutrition) had long been a societal concern, the new ‘child sciences’, child psychiatry and child psychology, addressed the importance of children’s minds and mental capacities as crucial to the normal development of the child. Scholars such as Wilhelm Preyer (1882), James Sully (1895) and Stanley G. Hall (1894, 1904) introduced new psychological theories on children’s minds, and their works reached and influenced Finnish educators and psychologists. The notion that the child’s mind is different from that of an adult, and that children are in need of special care and protection, resulted in intellectual, but also sentimental investments in childhood. The paper analyzes early Finnish child- psychological writings and looks at how the child as a psychological subject is conceptualized at the turn of the century. How was the child’s mind to be understood, how should a ‘normal’ child develop, in other words, what is a child? KING The publication some forty years ago of the landmark work by Philippe Ariès, entitled Centuries of Childhood in its widely-read English translation, unleashed decades of scholarly investigation of that once-neglected target, the child. Since then, historians have uncovered the traces of attitudes toward children — were they neglected, exploited, abused, cherished? — and patterns of child-rearing. They have explored such issues, among others, as the varieties of European household structure; definitions of the stages of life; childbirth, wetnursing, and the role of the midwife; child abandonment and the foundling home; infanticide and its prosecution; appren- ticeship, servitude, and fostering; the evolution of schooling; the consequences of religious diversification; and the impact of gender. This essay seeks to identify key features and recent trends amid this abundance of learned inquiry. 1.
