Prof. Dr. Walter Schicho 2 Preface In 2007, I first travelled to Cape Verde to volunteer at a local children- and youth center. I went there rather naïvely, not knowing much about the country’s history or current situation. After a couple of days I heard the first comments about “African“ and “European“. When I explained to people that it was my first time in Africa, for example, some told me not to say that out loud since many Cape Verdeans did not like to hear that. These comments and my overall experience there made me curious to learn more about the history of and the identity construction on the archipelago. After my return to Vienna I took several classes dealing with Creole Studies and thereby deepened my knowledge of and interest for Cape Verde in particular. Moreover, I have continued my work for the Cape Verdean children- and youth center up to today and have therefore constantly been involved and confronted with the country’s contemporary issues and difficulties. I would hereby like to thank everyone who has supported me thus far and will continue to support me. This thesis addresses the recent process of ”development” and globalization in Cape Verde since the early 1990s and its consequences on ”cultural” or ”national” identity construction – a construction that has always evolved around the society’s closeness to “Africanity” and “Europeanness”, respectively. The growing Internet access plays a vital role in this context, especially with regard to the younger generation, which is the main research focus. Subsequently, the correlation between identity construction, the conception of ”development” or ”developed” and ”undeveloped”, respectively, and processes of social exclusion will be emphasized. The thesis at hand aims at singling out and analyzing the aspect of identity construction and how people “adapt” their identity to the processes of “development” and globalization in Cape Verde. The relevant contexts and backgrounds are strongly entangled, which leads to constant overlaps and reciprocative effects. This means that changes described are

Cape Verde was born out of an early creole formation and movement is an essential part of Cape Verdean practices of language and identity.     REVIEWS I already mentioned that Horáková’s and Werkman’s book deals less with knowledge production in Africa than with knowledge production about Africa. While, for example, Viera Pawliková-Vilhanová rightly deplores that “the history of Africa” has only been viewed from a Eurocentric perspective, because there are still no “true African” theories, she does not deal with African perceptions of knowledge production. Hana Horáková’s and Kateřina Werkman’s book is a thorough exploration of the topic “Knowledge about Africa,” sensitising its readers to the many (mis-)representations about Africa and Africans. These are (still) important and relevant statements, albeit no longer particularly innovative. Thus, the book describes convincingly and thoroughly how patterns first elaborated in Said’s “Orientalism” also play a central role in the knowledge production on Africa. In its series on the history of nations, the publisher Nakladatelství Lidové noviny has already covered 13 African countries, while the author of the reviewed publication has previously contributed to works devoted to Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Namibia. In addition, Jan Klíma, the leading Czech authority on the Lusophone world, is also the author of histories on Portugal and Brazil. The author has already displayed his deep knowledge of Lusophone Africa in a number of previous books and articles devoted to topics such as the Portuguese Colonial War.

Using the ethnographic method this dissertation attempts to understand processes of racialization of “blackness.” My objective is to examine how racialization works to create black identities and to challenge the assumptions that black people do not actively participate in the discourses and practices of racial identity formation. I argue that Cape Verdean youth identities are constructed out of a process of negotiation and contestation, but the negotiation and contestation is stunted by the racial logic of the U.S.; a logic that configures blacks one- dimensionally. In doing so, I examine how North American ascriptions of blackness and forms of black popular culture inform processes of identity formation and negotiation among Cape Verdean youth.

Rosa1 University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth Abstract The paper traces the possibilities and limitations of transnational Cape Verdean Hip-Hop’s mobilization of the culture of radical memory for the disruption of racialized transnational capitalism and neocolonialism. One of the most common reference points, both in the symbolic formations of popular culture and emerging scholarly texts2 is the focus on CV Hip-Hop’s embrace of the life and work of Amilcar Cabral. Among the Lusophone texts that are available in translation, those from Cape Verde are few and far between. This lack can be attributed to multiple factors. First, creative publications from Cape Verde do not have wide circulation. Many Cape Verdean works are published in the islands and do not have a large international market, even among other Portuguese-speaking countries.
