Topic: Disclaimers POWERPOINT SLIDE 3 TIME REQUIRED 5-10 minutes PROCEDURE • To manage training expectations for participants To clearly establish the purpose and intention of Cultural Competence training FACILITATOR NOTES Review and discuss the following key points: • This is not a clinical training, we will not delve deep into clinical practices, concepts, or processes, beyond the culturally competent considerations associated with them • You will not be “culturally competent” after completing this training • There will be unfinished business after this training requiring your further learning and research • Personal “truths” expressed in this training by the Facilitator and the training participants are their truths, respectively, as they have experienced life and must be 111 met with respect. Page • The service population/population ofocus f will universally be referenced as “clients” in this training. PLEASE NOTE: You must not get caught up in “politically correct” or sanctioned language for certain field terms. OASAS Cultural Competence: A Journey to Improved Outcomes | Training Curriculum – Day 2 Facilitator’s Guide Cultural Competence Training Curriculum Outline (Day 2) Topic: Welcome Back/ Day 2 – Introduction & Overview of Training |Ground Rules POWERPOINT SLIDE 4 TIME REQUIRED 5 minutes MATERIALS NEEDED Ground Rules (written out on newsprint) Posted PURPOSE • To review ground rules/ expectations of all facilitators and participants for the training • To create a “safe space” for group to share and participate PROCEDURE • Review the Ground Rules with the participants and ask if there is anything missing that should be added to the group’s Ground Rules. • If the group agrees on additional rules, write them down and be sure to add them on this slide located in training Day 2 and 3. ✓ LISTEN TO EACH OTHER AND RESPECT OUR DIFFERENCES Respecting our differences is what this entire workshop is all about. ✓ AGREE TO DISAGREE Agreement is not necessarily the primary objective; complete exploration of different points of view is important. ✓ SPEAK FROM SELF Use “I’ Statements. We typically do not want to and cannot change something we do not understand. ✓ WHAT IS SAID IN THIS ROOM STAYS IN THIS ROOM This point should be obvious. Little can be accomplished in this workshop without complete honesty, and honesty cannot be achieved in an environment where individuals do not feel safe. ✓ EVERYONE AGREES TO MAKE AN EFFORT TO CONTRIBUTE HONESTLY AND TO SHARE AND DEAL WITH FEELINGS IN A POSITIVE FASHION Much of the success of this workshop is based on exploration of and an understanding of our feelings and attitudes towards others. Again, honesty and commitment are essential. ✓ EXPECT UNFINISHED BUSINESS 112 Understanding and valuing differences is a journey, and not a destination.
