Shedding Light on the Modalities of Authority in a Dar Al-Uloom, Or Religious Seminary, in Britain
religions Article Shedding Light on the Modalities of Authority in a Dar al-Uloom, or Religious Seminary, in Britain Haroon Sidat Centre for the Study of Islam in the UK, School of History, Archaeology and Religion, Cardiff University, Cardiff CF10 3EU, UK; Sidathe@cardiff.ac.uk Received: 25 July 2019; Accepted: 26 November 2019; Published: 29 November 2019 Abstract: ‘God is the Light of the heavens and the earth ::: ’ (Quran, 24:35.) This article sheds light on the modalities of authority that exist in a traditional religious seminary or Dar al-Uloom (hereon abbreviated to DU) in modern Britain. Based on unprecedented insider access and detailed ethnography, the paper considers how two groups of teachers, the senior and the younger generation, acquire and shine their authoritative light in unique ways. The article asserts that within the senior teachers an elect group of ‘luminaries’ exemplify a deep level of learning combined with practice and embodiment, while the remaining teachers are granted authority by virtue of the Prophetic light, or Hadith, they radiate. The younger generation of British-born teachers, however, are the torchbearers at the leading edge of directing the DU. While it may take time for them to acquire the social and symbolic capital of the senior teachers, operationally, they are the ones illuminating the way forward. The paper discusses the implications of the changing nature of authority within the DU is likely to have for Muslims in Britain. Keywords: Dar al-Uloom; Islam in Britain; Deoband; ulama; tradition; authority 1. Introduction During research undertaken for my PhD thesis, authority emerged as a significant analytical category and became one of the lenses through which I examined the Dar al-Uloom (DU).1 Its relationship with the Islamic tradition, that of being anchored in an authentic past, results in intense competition among British Muslims who vie to present themselves as heirs of an authentic interpretation and practice of Islam (Gilliat-Ray 2010). -
They Call It the Hajji Mall
David Buchanan They Call it the Hajji Mall he first time I heard the word, hajji, it didn’t even register. Until a few months ago, I was certain that my first encounter with the word happened in a cafeteria on an American Air Force base in the United Arab Emirates Tin 2007. I was wrong. I had just completed a rough draft of this essay when I accidentally stumbled upon an old email on my computer from my first deployment in 2005. Following a hunch, I searched my hard drive for the word “hajji” and then read the following line from a message that I had sent my brother from my base in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: “Left base today and bought some stuff at a market just outside our front gate. They call it the Hajji Mall.” My brother has a frustratingly strong memory, and he responded to my email that same day: “Hadji was Johnny Quest’s sidekick.” He was right. In the Johnny Quest cartoon series (first aired in 1964), Hadji is a 12-year-old orphan from Calcutta. He is the adopted brother of the protagonist/hero Johnny Quest; he knows judo; he is quick to deliver whatever wisdom the adventure of the episode demands. What the creators of Johnny Quest ignored, and what I did not realize (despite six semesters studying Arabic in college) was that the word hajji is an Anglicized, phonetic representation of a very real, and very specific word in the Arabic language. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, hajji (sometimes spelled hadji, haji, or hogie) is defined as “The title given to one who has made the greater pilgrimage . -
An Ottoman Global Moment
AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History By Kahraman Sakul, M.A Washington, DC November, 18, 2009 Copyright 2009 by Kahraman Sakul All Rights Reserved ii AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT Kahraman Sakul, M.A. Dissertation Advisor: Gabor Agoston, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to place the Ottoman Empire within its proper context in the Napoleonic Age and calls for a recognition of the crucial role of the Sublime Porte in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). The Ottoman-Russian joint naval expedition (1798-1800) to the Ionian Islands under the French occupation provides the framework for an examination of the Ottoman willingness to join the European system of alliance in the Napoleonic age which brought the victory against France in the Levant in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). Collections of the Ottoman Archives and Topkapı Palace Archives in Istanbul as well as various chronicles and treatises in Turkish supply most of the primary sources for this dissertation. Appendices, charts and maps are provided to make the findings on the expedition, finance and logistics more readable. The body of the dissertation is divided into nine chapters discussing in order the global setting and domestic situation prior to the forming of the second coalition, the Adriatic expedition, its financial and logistical aspects with the ensuing socio-economic problems in the Morea, the Sublime Porte’s relations with its protectorate – The Republic of Seven United Islands, and finally the post-war diplomacy. -
Terrorist and Organized Crime Groups in the Tri-Border Area (Tba) of South America
TERRORIST AND ORGANIZED CRIME GROUPS IN THE TRI-BORDER AREA (TBA) OF SOUTH AMERICA A Report Prepared by the Federal Research Division, Library of Congress under an Interagency Agreement with the Crime and Narcotics Center Director of Central Intelligence July 2003 (Revised December 2010) Author: Rex Hudson Project Manager: Glenn Curtis Federal Research Division Library of Congress Washington, D.C. 205404840 Tel: 2027073900 Fax: 2027073920 E-Mail: [email protected] Homepage: http://loc.gov/rr/frd/ p 55 Years of Service to the Federal Government p 1948 – 2003 Library of Congress – Federal Research Division Tri-Border Area (TBA) PREFACE This report assesses the activities of organized crime groups, terrorist groups, and narcotics traffickers in general in the Tri-Border Area (TBA) of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, focusing mainly on the period since 1999. Some of the related topics discussed, such as governmental and police corruption and anti–money-laundering laws, may also apply in part to the three TBA countries in general in addition to the TBA. This is unavoidable because the TBA cannot be discussed entirely as an isolated entity. Based entirely on open sources, this assessment has made extensive use of books, journal articles, and other reports available in the Library of Congress collections. It is based in part on the author’s earlier research paper entitled “Narcotics-Funded Terrorist/Extremist Groups in Latin America” (May 2002). It has also made extensive use of sources available on the Internet, including Argentine, Brazilian, and Paraguayan newspaper articles. One of the most relevant Spanish-language sources used for this assessment was Mariano César Bartolomé’s paper entitled Amenazas a la seguridad de los estados: La triple frontera como ‘área gris’ en el cono sur americano [Threats to the Security of States: The Triborder as a ‘Grey Area’ in the Southern Cone of South America] (2001). -
Xviii. Yüzyilda Yirmisekiz Mehmed Çelebi'nin Fransa'ya
Turkish Studies - International Periodical For The Languages, Literature and History of Turkish or Turkic Volume 8/10 Fall 2013, p. 1-16, ANKARA-TURKEY XVIII. Letter to Shaykh Abu Muhammad 17 August 2007
Page 1 To the kind Shaykh Abu Muhammad, Allah protect him, Peace be upon you, and mercy of Allah, and his blessings. I hope that this message will reach you, and that you, the family, and all the brothers are in health and prosperity from Allah almighty. Please inform me of your condition and the brothers, in-laws, and offspring. I apologize for the delay in sending messages to you, due to security issues seen by the brothers accompanying me and which may last, whereby there will be a message every several months, so please excuse me in that regard, knowing that all of us, praise Allah, are in good condition and health, and hopefully things will ease up and I will be able to meet you and benefit from your opinions. I was following up with the brothers your kind words in supporting people of the right, and confronting people of the evil, which an observer would find as a positive development, Allah reward you and make that in your good deeds balance, due to performing that great duty. Please inform me about the conditions on your side and your future programs, and provide me with your opinions and counsel. - I present to you a very important subject that needs great effort to remove ambiguity around the subject of the Islamic state of Iraq (ISI), since there is easier contact between you, the media, and the information network, so you have to plug that Page 2 gap, whereby the main axis for your work plan in the coming stage would be the continued support for the truthful Mujahidin in Iraq headed by our brothers in ISI, and defending them should be the core issue and should take the lion’s share and the top priority in your speeches and statements, and mobilizing people, and uncovering the opponents’ conspiracies in an open and clear manner, in other words, your support for ISI must be overt and obvious. -

Excavating Freytag's Pyramid Narrative, Identity and the Museum
EXCAVATING FREYTAG’S PYRAMID NARRATIVE, IDENTITY AND THE MUSEUM VISITOR EXPERIENCE David William Francis 2019 UCL Research Degree: Institute of Archaeology Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 1 I, David William Francis, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract In this thesis, I attempt to trace the thread that links the theoretical concept of narrative to the museum blockbuster exhibition. I adopt a qualitative dialogic approach, exploring the topic of narrative from the perspective of both exhibition makers and museum visitors. Semi-structured interviews with museum professionals provide an insight into the strategies and practices involved in the encoding of narrative in museum exhibitions. Interviews with members of the public reveal how visitors decode exhibition narratives, while also illustrating the role museums play in the stories people tell about themselves. Narrative is a term that is often used in reference to museums but is frequently under-theorised. My case studies – three blockbuster exhibitions held at the British Museum from 2013 to 2015 – each approach the question of how is narrative as a concept relevant in helping us understand the critical issue of the museum from different perspectives. Drawing on the work of the Roland Barthes and the Mikhail Bakhtin, I investigate how concepts taken from literary theory such as plot structure and narratorial perspective might manifests themselves in the space of a museum exhibition. Using the concept of cultural capital taken from the work of the French Sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, I also explore the role a visitor’s social background and familiarity with museums plays in their decision to follow a narrative or reject it. -
Tanzimatçi Düşüncenin Kaynaği Sefirler Öz
Tanzimatçı Düşüncenin Kaynağı Sefirler / M. İLHAN TANZİMATÇI DÜŞÜNCENİN KAYNAĞI SEFİRLER Mustafa İLHAN* ÖZ Osmanlı Devleti, 17. Yüzyıldan itibaren zenginleşen ve güçlenen Avrupa devletlerinin birçok bakımdan gerisinde kaldı. Savaş alanındaki başarısızlıklar nedeniyle önce askeri alanda ıslahatlar yapıldı. Ancak devletin güç kaybetmesinin önüne geçilemedi. Osmanlı devleti 18. Yüzyılın sonuna doğru her alanda Avrupa’nın üstünlüğünü kabul etmek zorunda kaldı. 1* Kaymakam, İçişleri Bakanlığı, [email protected] M.G.T: 21.10.2015 / D.S.T: 21.05.2016 93 THE SOURCE OF REFORMIST IDEA; AMBASSADORS ABSTRACT The Ottoman Empire has lagged behind the strengthened and enriched European Countries in many respects since the 17th century. Initially, reforms were made in the military due to the failure on the battlefield, but it could not prevent the State losing power. -
