Following Sheikh Zayed Road (SZR) in the direction of Jebel Ali / Abu Dhabi Drive past Emaar Gold and Diamond Park and then Dubai Garden drive past Reem al Bawadi Restaurant / Canon on your right side. Centre on SZR to leave at Exit 42 (towards Dubai). The building is located between the Chevrolet GMC Motors and KIA / Hyundai Stay in the right hand lane to leave SZR at Exit 39 Mall of the Emirates, and join Motors showrooms. the middle lane of the slip road. Follow signs for Umm Sequim Road (D63 East), do not follow signs to the mall, GPS and then cross the bridge over SZR. As you cross the bridge immediately keep in the right hand lane, following signs for Sharjah (you will circle to the right, in front of the Mall of the Emirates), and Latitude: 25° 7’ 53.50” N (25.1315266) then keep left to re-join SZR (now heading back on SZR in the direction you Longitude: 55° 12’ 49.88” E (55.2138546) came). On joining SZR keep to the right lane to leave immediately at Exit 42 Al Marabea St. (opposite to the Dubai Garden Centre). By drawing on the traditional association between train, perception and the city we argue that the design and planning of Dubai Metro is intended as a signifier of modernity for the Gulf region, with its futuristic designs and in the context of the local socio-cultural associations. (PT-2013 - Higgins) Engineering Challenges of Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah Kathy Higgins Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s, NL, Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT Dubai is the largest city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and is quickly developing into a worldwide cultural and business hub. Its economy is driven by the oil and gas industry, and since the country first began to export oil in 1962, the UAE has morphed from a series of modest fishing communities, to a major economic centre. The financial boom of the oil and gas industry has contributed to the construction of the world’s tallest skyscraper and the world’s largest shopping mall, as well as a flourishing tourism industry. Dubai is constantly pushing the limits of design innovation, which undoubtedly contributes to its touristic appeal. One feature in particular is Palm Jumeirah, which is the first of a series of artificial islands located off the coast of Dubai, in the Persian Gulf. The island is formed in the shape of a palm tree with a protective crescent-shaped breakwater partially enclosing it. The island and breakwater house commercial and residential infrastructure, and adds 78 kilometres to the Dubai coastline. Government owned Nakheel Properties is responsible for the concept and construction. The island was designed by a team of over 40 consultants providing solutions to coastal, material and transportation related concerns. Construction was undertaken by European dredging and marine contractors and began in June 2001.
