ABSTRACT This ethnographic study explored factors that facilitate or hinder women's participation in health promotion and HIV prevention in the Mt. Selinda area of rural Zimbabwe. Rates of HIV and AIDS in Zimbabwe are among the highest in the world and increasing most quickly among young females. A purposeful convenience sample of 11 Ndau women (key participants) was interviewed twice. Seventeen key informants and four focus groups offered further perspectives. The resulting narrative presents a picture of Ndau women's existence that is difficult and oppressive. Females are socialized early to be workers and mothers within a context of limited voice, subservience, violence, and economic powerlessness. Application of a health promotion framework reinforced the reality that these women are generally unable to use measures for HIV prevention. Socio-cultural and economic factors of gender inequality were analyzed through an ecological approach, showing that cultural beliefs and practices, along with national and international forces, support and sustain gender inequality. If there is to be change in the AIDS crisis, the study's findings suggest that HIV prevention strategies should be integrated within a participatory community development model that includes opportunities for both men and women to carry out gender analysis. While health professionals must understand and be sensitive to culture and context, existing unjust and inequitable structures at all levels of society must be examined and challenged. QuJJjun Cobbing. By the 1970s the mfecane had become one of the most widely abused terms in southern African historical literature. Let the reader attempt a simple definition of the mfecane, for instance. This is not such an easy task. From one angle the mfecane was the Nguni diaspora which from the early 1820s took Nguni raiding communities such as the Ndebele, the Ngoni and the Gaza over a huge region of south-central Africa reaching as far north as Lake Tanzania. Africanists stress the positive features of the movement. As Ajayi observed in 1968: 'When we consider all the implications of the expansions of Bantu-speaking peoples there can he no doubt that the theory of stagnation has no basis whatsoever.' A closely related, though different, mfecane centres on Zululand and the figure of Shaka. It has become a revolutionary process internal to Nguni society which leads to the development of the ibutho and the tributary mode of production. Shaka is a heroic figure providing a positive historical example and some self-respect for black South Africans today. But inside these wider definitions another mfecane more specific- ally referring to the impact of Nguni raiders (the Nedbele, Hlubi and Ngwane) on the Sotho west of the Drakensberg.

While centred on this area it acquired some of its characteristic features - notably a regimental system, and the dominance of a Dlamini aristocracy. Around 1815 the Swazi came under pressure from the South, and were forced to colonise the land lying north of the Lusutfu. Here they remained for some years a nation under arms, as they plundered local peoples, and were themselves swept about by the currents of the Mfecane. In time a more settled administration emerged, as the aristocracy spread out from the royal centres at Ezulwini, and this process accelerated under Mswati as he subdued recalcitrant chiefdoms, and restructured the regiments.

Maposa Faculty of Arts, Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University, Zimbabwe. Accepted 23 January, 2014 Renaissance studies continue to grow in post-colonial Africa. This study explores the Ndau culture in a bid to assess its vitality and relevance to contemporary society’s water technology in Zimbabwe. The thesis of the study posits that the Ndau people have indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) that can be tapped in the implementation of water resource management. Some Ndau beliefs and practices on water resources can be used as environmental management tools in order to do justice to climate change. These, if blended with western technologies, can be effective intervention strategies to mitigate the challenges posed by climate change. The study adopted a qualitative research design in a case study approach. Purposive sampling was used to select community elders and traditional practitioners who are associated with the in-depth knowledge on traditional beliefs and practices. The data collection techniques included interviews, participant observations and documentary analysis. The study observed that the particular Ndau cultural beliefs and practices that are not only relevant but consistent with water technological changes and these must be strengthened as part of a people’s heritage. However, systemic challenges, gender biases, and inequities exist for women in the global healthcare workforce. Fragile and confict-afected states/countries (FCASs) experience addi- tional pressures that require specifc attention to overcome challenges and disparities for sustainable development. FCASs account for 42% of global deaths due to communicable, maternal, perinatal, and nutritional conditions, requir- ing an appropriate health workforce. Consequently, there is a need to understand the impact of gender on workforce participation, particularly women in FCASs. Methods: This scoping review examined the extent and nature of existing literature, as well as identifed factors afecting women’s participation in the health workforce in FCASs. Following Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review methodology framework, a systematic search was conducted of published literature in fve health sciences databases and grey literature. Two reviewers independently screened the title and abstract, followed by a full-text review for shortlisted sources against set criteria. Results: Of 4284, 34 sources were reviewed for full text, including 18 primary studies, fve review papers, and 11 grey literature sources. In most FCASs, women predominate in the health workforce, concentrated in nursing and mid- wifery professions; medicine, and the decision-making and leadership positions, however, are occupied by men.

III (Apr. 2014), PP 137-149 e-ISSN: 2279-0837, p-ISSN: 2279-0845. www.iosrjournals.org Ethnicity, Development and the Dynamics of Political Domination in Southern Matabeleland Clifford Mabhena Institute of Development Studies- National University of Science and Technology-Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Abstract: This article argues that the hegemony of the Shona people in Zimbabwe has been largely influenced by ethnicity and the quest to dominate Matabeleland politically, socially and economically. Development marginalisation of Matabeleland region, I argue has been influenced by ethnicity and politics of revenge. The study used ethnography to collect data and hence in-depth interviews were used as data collection tools. The results of the study indicate that Matabeleland has been largely dominated by the Shona ethnic group, and arguments advanced by scholars for this dominance, it is argued, Ndebele dominated the Shona people in the 19th and 20th centuries. This was due to conquest by the marauding Ndebele warriors under the leadership of King Mzilikazi and latter on King Lobhengula. The ascendance of the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANUPF) in the 1980 independence elections opened the gates for the ascendancy of the Shona people as the party was pre-dominantly Shona speaking. The march to state house by the ZANUPF dominated party created a lot of tension between the two ethnic groups; Ndebele and Shona, and hence the lashing out of the fifth brigade in 1983 and 1984 in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces of the country. February 2017 i SUMMARY Title: The role of migration in the morphing of Shona identity This dissertation reports on a study, which used story telling through installation art in analysing how migration has affected the identity of Shona people of Zimbabwe resulting in a new hybrid identity. This identity morphing has happened through the increased rate of trans-border mobility for economic survival and development. The research explores reflections associated with the life of individuals through the unfolding of socio-political and economic situations in Zimbabwe focusing on the historical and contemporary social relations of the Shonas (from Zimbabwe). The research in addition speculates as to how this migration creates difficulties with regards to immigrants’ experiences in their new habitats as they enter a state of limbo. It further investigates how the difference in status and the perception of identity affects Zimbabweans in their social inheritance of nomadic characteristics. The main objective of this study is to cast light on how constant migration has affected the constructs of the Shona identity as the people get in contact with various cultures leading to the formation of an intercultural identity.

However the relationship between the two is not clear. Historically, decline in both infant and child mortality rates, and the fall in both male and female adult mortality rates especially since the turn of the 20 th century has been attributed to a multiplicity of factors associated with economic and social advancement. These factors include rising availability of material goods, urbanization, improved infrastructure and housing, rising levels of education, improvement in personal and social hygiene, medical advances, the disappearance of slavery, and other host of significant reductions in discrimination for gender, religious, ethnic groups, etc Whilst most studies and logical reasoning posits a positive relationship between economic growth and improved health, it is important to note that sometimes improved economic growth can result in decline in health. Granados and Ionides (2007) indicate that the negative association found between economic growth and health progress in the most recent half century. These modern studies reveal a short-term tendency of death rates to increase during economic expansions in industrialized countries in recent decades (Graham et al., 1992; Abdala et al., 2000; Ruhm 2000 and 2003). Despite existence of inverse relationship between increase in gross domestic product (GDP) and decline in health in some instances, this study is however going to dwell on the positive correlation between these two variables.

Background r Backg Zimbabwe joined the GFF in July 2019 to improve the health and nutrition of Zimbabwean people. The Government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MOHCC) is currently leading the GFF process. The experience of GFF countries has shown that civil society is most effective when it is structured and coordinated in a coalition. Through forming a new GFF CSO Platform, or designating an existing platform for engagement on GFF, Zimbabwean civil society can be stronger together. Civil society can collectively dene priorities to share information, ensure that policy and program “asks” by different members of the platform are mutually reinforcing and emphasize shared concerns, and streamline engagement with government and donors. A small team of Zimbabwean civil society organizations working in the health sector formed an interim coalition steering committee: CWGH, supported by Zimbabwe AIDS Network (ZAN), Women’s Action Group (WAG), and The Centre for Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Research Zimbabwe (CeSHHAR Zimbabwe). This group worked with the CSO GFF Resource and Engagement Hub to design a workshop to orient Zimbabwean health civil society organizations to the GFF, and develop plans to engage in the process.
