Wiessner, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT, and approved June 22, 2021 (received for review February 5, 2021) Control of fire is one of the most important technological innovations within the evolution of humankind. The archaeological signal of fire use becomes very visible from around 400,000 y ago onward. Interestingly, this occurs at a geologically similar time over major parts of the Old World, in Africa, as well as in western Eurasia, and in different subpopulations of the wider hominin metapopulation. We interpret this spatiotemporal pattern as the result of cultural diffusion, and as representing the earliest clear-cut case of widespread cultural change resulting from diffusion in human evolution. This fire-use pattern is followed slightly later by a similar spatiotemporal distribution of Levallois technology, at the beginning of the African Middle Stone Age and the western Eurasian Middle Paleolithic. These archaeo- logical data, as well as studies of ancient genomes, lead us to hypothesize that at the latest by 400,000 y ago, hominin subpopulations encountered one another often enough and were sufficiently tolerant to- ward one another to transmit ideas and techniques over large regions within relatively short time periods. Furthermore, it is likely that the large-scale social networks necessary to transmit complicated skills were also in place.     The mammals and birds from the Gruta do Caldeirão, Portugal SIMON J. M. DAVIS1 ABSTRACTCaldeirão cave is 140 km north east of Lisbon near the town of Tomar. João Zilhão, of the University of Lisbon, excavated Caldeirão between 1979 and 1988. It con- tains a sequence of levels with associated cultural remains belonging to the Mousterian, Early Upper Palaeolithic, Solutrean, Magdalenian and Neolithic. Faunal remains from a wide spectrum of species were recovered by sieving. The most common large mammals include red deer, equids, goat, chamois, aurochs, and wild boar. Large carnivores, especially hyaena, were common in the older levels, and became scarcer or disappeared in the course of the cave’s occupation. Other carnivores include four species of felids, wolf, fox, bear and badger. Rabbit, hare and beaver were also present. Caldeirão provides us with an interesting zoo-archaeological puzzle. Did the cave function more as a hyaena den, at least in its early periods of occupation? The main indicators of hyaena activity include the presence of Crocuta remains, coprolites, and “semi-digested” bones. All these are most common in Mousterian and EUP levels. Burn marks are scarce in the Mousterian and EUP levels, but abundant in subsequent levels. The lithics to bone ratios are low in the Mousterian and EUP, but high in the Solutrean. Most remains of the equids and red deer are juvenile in the early levels and adult in the later ones — a possible reflection of hyaenas’ inability to hunt and/or bring back to the cave adults of these species. It is proposed that the cave functioned more as a hyaena den in the early levels and that subsequently hyaenas disappeared as people used the cave more intensively.

Cílem bylo vytvořit databázi ostatků AMČ a in- terpretovat nálezové okolnosti z lokalit, které se nachází na území Portugalské republiky, Španělského království, Německé spolkové republiky, Rakouské republiky, České republiky a na území Polské republiky. Základem práce se stalo studium paleoantropologické tuzem- ské a světové literatury. Protože nálezy AMČ jsou často izolované a v některých případech i velmi fragmentované je velmi obtížné interpretovat, které procesy zapříčinily izolovanost a fragmentárnost ostatků.

    The Long Cold Walk 1.4 mya – 25 kya The human prehistory of Andalucia starts about 1.4 million years ago at Orce in Granada province. Succeeding generations of Homo erectus managed to migrate out of Africa, through the Middle East and thence into Asia and Europe. They were the first humans to achieve this and only did so then because a fluctuation in the climate and vegetation created a ‘green corridor’ through a normally arid Sinai Peninsula and Levant. One individual died at Orce. This early incursion into the Iberian Peninsula failed. Lack of numbers, lack of food resources, change of climate, who knows? Homo erectus lived on in Asia but not in Europe. Guadix – Baza Basin In the north of Granada province, surrounded by some of the tallest mountains of the Iberian peninsula, what we know today as the Basin of Guadix or the Guadix - Baza depression or basin was, for 5 million years, a lake with no outlet to the sea, Lake Baza. Sediments, brought down by the mountain streams, were deposited in the basin in horizontal sheets. The lake drained about 500,000 years ago after earthquakes allowed the paleo-river Fardes, that flowed out of the lake in a westerly direction, to be captured by a tributary of the Rio Guadalquivir. During the period the lake existed, the area had a diverse and rich flora that attracted herbivores, predators, scavengers, and, if the human remains, a molar from Orce, are correctly dated, an early species of humans, from about 1.4 mya. Over the last 500,000 years, new streams have carved out the canyons, ravines and Badlands that characterise the area today, the most southerly desert in Europe.
