Harry Gullichsen, the chairman of the Sunila mill and Managing Director of the Ahlström company, was a per- sonal friend of architect Alvar Aalto. He was already then internationally renowned. The year before, in 1935 in Helsinki was founded Artek by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gul- lichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their goal was “to sell fur- niture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhi- bitions and other educational means.” Alvar Aalto and Harry Gullichsen had in common mo- dern ideas about art, architecture and social progress. The Sunila residential area became the Finnish interpre- tation of international modernism, the 1st “Forest town”. The view of Sunila from the sea became the symbol of the Finnish wood processing industry.
