The year before, in 1935 in Helsinki was founded Artek by four young idealists: Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gul- lichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl. Their goal was “to sell fur- niture and to promote a modern culture of living by exhi- bitions and other educational means.” Alvar Aalto and Harry Gullichsen had in common mo- dern ideas about art, architecture and social progress. The Sunila residential area became the Finnish interpre- tation of international modernism, the 1st “Forest town”. The view of Sunila from the sea became the symbol of the Finnish wood processing industry. The pulp mill was said to be the most beautiful in the world and was pre- sented at the New York World’s Fair of 1939.
