MONTEPULCIANO's PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – C.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES in FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL and POLITI
MONTEPULCIANO’S PALAZZO COMUNALE, 1440 – c.1465: RETHINKING CASTELLATED CIVIC PALACES IN FLORENTINE ARCHITECTURAL AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS Two Volumes Volume I Koching Chao Ph.D. University of York History of Art September 2019 ABSTRACT This thesis argues for the significance of castellated civic palaces in shaping and consolidating Florence’s territorial hegemony during the fifteenth century. Although fortress-like civic palaces were a predominant architectural type in Tuscan communes from the twelfth century onwards, it is an understudied field. In the literature of Italian Renaissance civic and military architecture, the castellated motifs of civic palaces have either been marginalised as an outdated and anti-classical form opposing Quattrocento all’antica taste, or have been oversimplified as a redundant object lacking defensive functionality. By analysing Michelozzo’s Palazzo Comunale in Montepulciano, a fifteenth-century castellated palace resembling Florence’s thirteenth-century Palazzo dei Priori, this thesis seeks to address the ways in which castellated forms substantially legitimised Florence’s political, military and cultural supremacy. Chapter One examines textual and pictorial representations of Florence’s castellation civic palaces and fortifications in order to capture Florentine perceptions of castellation. This investigation offers a conceptual framework, interpreting the profile of castellated civic palaces as an effective architectural affirmation of the contemporary idea of a powerful city-republic rather than being a symbol of despotism as it has been previously understood. Chapters Two and Three examine Montepulciano’s renovation project for the Palazzo Comunale within local and central administrative, socio-political, and military contexts during the first half of the fifteenth century, highlighting the Florentine features of Montepulciano’s town hall despite the town’s peripheral location within the Florentine dominion. -
Loss Aversion? Not with Half-A-Million on the Table!
Institute for Empirical Research in Economics University of Zurich Working Paper Series ISSN 1424-0459 Working Paper No. 274 Loss Aversion? Not with Half-a-Million on the Table! Pavlo Blavatskyy and Ganna Pogrebna March 2006 Loss Aversion? Not with Half-a-Million on the Table! Pavlo Blavatskyy1 and Ganna Pogrebna2 February 2006 Abstract In the television show Affari Tuoi a contestant is endowed with a sealed box containing a monetary prize between one cent and half a million euros. In the course of the show the contestant is offered to exchange her box for another sealed box with the same distribution of possible monetary prizes inside. This offers a unique natural laboratory for testing the predictions of expected utility theory versus prospect theory using lotteries with large stakes. While expected utility theory predicts that an individual is exactly indifferent between accepting and rejecting the exchange offer, prospect theory predicts that an individual should always reject the exchange offer due to the assumption of loss aversion. We find that the assumption of loss aversion is violated by 46 percent of all contestants in our recorded sample. Thus, contestants do not appear to be predominantly loss averse when dealing with lotteries involving large stakes. Key words: loss aversion, expected utility theory, prospect theory, natural experiment JEL Classification codes: C93, D81 1 Corresponding author, Institute for Empirical Research in Economics, University of Zurich, Winterthurerstrasse 30, CH-8006 Zurich, Switzerland, tel.: +41(0)446343586, fax: +41(0)446344978, e-mail: [email protected] 2 University of Innsbruck, Department of Economics, Institute of Public Finance, Universitätstrasse 15/4, A - 6020 Innsbruck, Austria, tel.: +43 (0)5125077148, email: [email protected] Loss Aversion? Processing of terabytes to petabytes of data, or incorporating non-structural data and multi-structured data sources and types require advanced analytics and data science mechanisms for both raw and partially-processed information. Despite considerable advancements on high performance, large storage, and high computation power, there are challenges in identifying, clustering, classifying, and interpreting of a large spectrum of information. The conference had the following tracks: Application-oriented analytics Big Data Sentiment/opinion analysis Data Analytics in Profiling and Service Design Fundamentals Mechanisms and features Predictive Data Analytics Transport and Traffic Analytics in Smart Cities We take here the opportunity to warmly thank all the members of the DATA ANALYTICS 2018 technical program committee, as well as all the reviewers. The creation of such a high quality conference program would not have been possible without their involvement. We also kindly thank all the authors that dedicated much of their time and effort to contribute to DATA ANALYTICS 2018. -
A Preliminary Survey on the Artistic Heritage of the University of Genoa, Italy1
ZESZYTY NAUKOWE UNIWERSYTETU JAGIELLOŃSKIEGO MCCCXIII OPUSCULA MUSEALIA Z. 18 2010 LUCA BOCHICCHIO University of Genoa Between tradition and innovation: A preliminary survey on the artistic heritage of the University of Genoa, Italy1 Introduction Italy has some of the oldest universities in the world and its university heritage is among the most signifi cant in Europe. Botanical gardens and anatomical theatres devel- oped in fi fteenth and sixteenth century and were later introduced in other European uni- versities. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in Italian university heritage, both from the Italian academy, the Italian Council of Rectors (CRUI) and from national and international organisations such as the ANMS (Associazione Nazionale Musei Sci- entifi ci), UMAC (the international committee for university museums and collections of ICOM) and Universeum, the University Heritage European Network2. The fi rst organized form of higher education in Genoa goes back to the thirteenth cen- tury, with the establishment of several Collegi of law, theology, medicine and art studies. In 1569, the Senate of the Republic of Genoa introduced in the Collegio of the Jesuits the chairs of canon law, civil law, moral philosophy and mathematics. In 1640, this Collegio was located in what is today the Palazzo dell’Università. Following the suppression of the Jesuits in 1773, the faculties of the University of Genoa have developed within the various political administrations that have governed that part of Italy. Today, the core of 1 This paper is a developed version of a communication presented at the Universeum Network Meeting 2009 (Toulouse, 11–13 June 2009): Traditional methods and new models of research: AdAC, the Archive of Contemporary Art of University of Genoa. -
