Da Vinci Science Center Learn about their STEM Mentoring program. 3 Message From Board Chair and President & CEO

A Community Foundation’s primary philanthropic mission is to “connect people who care with causes that matter,” and the Board and staff of the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation work tirelessly to make these critical connections. By connecting generous and caring individuals to important community organizations, our efforts have a deep and lasting impact on the quality of life in the community.

Helping to bring these connections into focus has had an important impact on our grantmaking. With the emergence of three primary grantmaking platforms, we have strengthened connections with our Philanthropic Partners, expanded the number and size of One-Time Community Grants, and introduced our new Multi-Year Impact Grants.

Our primary grantmaking platform, our Philanthropic Partner Grants, is comprised of partnerships with individuals, corporations, families, and others who have established charitable funds at the Community Foundation. Major strides have been taken to keep these partners informed and engaged. Grantmaking from these partner funds has eclipsed $2 million.

One-Time Community Grants were made to support an extremely diverse range of community initiatives. Grantmaking from this area extended to over 60 organizations across the Lehigh Valley and beyond.

Multi-Year Impact Grants have made a tremendous difference in our ability to support and encourage collaborative efforts and to fill in any perceived community gaps. During our second year of Multi-Year Impact grantmaking, we approved a $100,000 grant to support an important S.T.E.M. mentoring program under the leadership of the Da Vinci Science Center and a $50,000 grant to support the amazing FREDDY Awards of the State Theatre Center for the Arts.

We would like to thank you for your continued support of philanthropy in our community, and we invite you to help us connect those who care with the causes that matter most!

12 PROFILE IN PHILANTHROPY: Pharo Family Fund

TYPE OF FUND: Donor-Advised

DONOR: THE PHARO FAMILY The Lehigh Valley Community Foundation can provide a permanent home for family foundations when family members no longer wish to be occupied with the costs or administration of their foundations. A FAMILY TRADITION OF GIVING: In the mid-twentieth century, J. Donald Pharo and his wife Margaret, began to make charitable gifts that reflected their core commitments to family, church, and community. The Pharos’ sons – Donald, John, Richard, and Bob – embodied and extended their parents’ belief in service to others and giving and sharing their good fortune. In 1974, the Pharo brothers established a charitable family foundation with the proceeds of the sale of 40 acres of Pharo-owned land to Hanover Township for the Township’s park and municipal building. CONVERTING THE FOUNDATION: “My brother John had passed on,” recalls Donald Pharo, pictured above, “my brother Richard was not in the area, and my brother Bob was not in good health. It simply made sense to convert the Pharo family foundation into a permanent fund at the Community Foundation so that the family name could live on and our charitable intentions could be met long after we were all gone.”

DONORS: RUTH & CHARLES MARCON As an LVCF board member, Charlie has had the opportunity to learn about needs in the community and how to meet those needs. “The Foundation has an important mission. If you want to give to the community, the Foundation gives you a great way to do it.”

ON COMMUNITY: “The Lehigh Valley is home,” says Charlie. “Ruth and I grew up here.” Ruth grew up in Allentown and is a graduate of Dieruff High School and Penn State University. Charlie grew up in Bethlehem and is a graduate Liberty High School and Davidson College. “Our roots are here,” agrees Ruth, “and our roots go deep. The Lehigh valley has been a wonderful place to raise a family. There are many opportunities for enjoying life here and here is where we will stay.”

ON LEGACY: “The legacy that we’ll leave behind,” says Ruth, “will be children and grandchildren, not a well-known name. We’re not important enough to be remembered in that way,” she laughs, “and that’s fine with us.”

“We’re not interested in leaving a name behind,” agrees Charlie. “That’s not important to us. I’ve lived long enough to know that people who are famous leave us and life goes on. What is important to me are goals and aspirations - setting goals and defining a vision and then accomplishing those things. It is the vision-not our names -that matters. And the vision, for us, is to have the Lehigh Valley be an increasingly better place in which to live and to work.”

Justin Sheftel Scholarship Fund TYPES OF FUNDS: Donor-Advised & Scholarship DONORS: MEMORIAL GIFTS FROM THE COMMUNITY The funds were established in loving memory of Linda & Elliot Sheftel’s son, Justin, upon his tragic death at 18 years old.

ON THE MEMORIAL FUND: The Sheftels knew that they wanted and needed to memorialize their son. They also knew that they had to do something with the many gifts that had been given in memory of Justin. “When something like that happens,” says Linda, “you’re not thinking clearly. But you know instinctively that you have to keep going, you have to keep busy. When grief comes over you like that, you’ll do anything to keep from going into a dark place.” They turned to the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation to establish a charitable fund that could receive gifts, and whose philanthropic purpose they could define more specifically at a later time.

ON BASEBALL: Justin Sheftel loved baseball and was a devoted Boston Red Sox fan. To honor his memory, the Sheftels organized a softball tournament, which is now in its 11th year. It is an event whose energy surprises even Linda. “We’ve had wonderful support,” she says, “and there are teams waiting to get in. We give away all the money that we raise. Seniors at Parkland get scholarships, and teams in the tournament choose favorite charities.”

35 The Foundation on the Move

In December 2014, the Community Foundation office moved from the former location on Postal Road in Allentown to Hamilton Street in downtown Allentown. The Foundation hosted an Open House in March. Attendees toured the new offices and saw the expanded space. Members of the community, our donors, current and former board members and former staff members made the trip to our new downtown location to join us.

Since the move, the Foundation has hosted many of our community partners in our new space.

We encourage anyone who has not yet seen our new office to stop by!

The week-long camp included paddling down the Lehigh River, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, fishing and -fly casting. While emphasizing healthy, outdoor opportunities close to home, the program sparks a passion for environmental stewardship.

39 2014 Donor Recognition Event The Community Foundation held a donor recognition reception at the ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks on November 12, 2014.

Bernie Story, President & CEO, kicked off the evening's program, which presented examples of using the Community Foundation as a way to give. Bernie introduced Beall Fowler, a member of the Board of Governors. Beall and his late wife, Linny, established two funds at the Community Foundation. Beall shared anecdotes about each fund to explain the reason for and purpose of them. A donor designated fund was established to support a particular nonprofit organization while benefitting from the Community Foundation's fund management expertise. A donor-advised fund provides grants to many nonprofit organizations and programs. The Community Foundation staff is available to support Beall, as fund representative, by providing knowledge of pressing community needs and organizations.

One of the programs supported by the W. Beall and Marlene O. Fowler Fund is El Sistema Lehigh Valley, a program of the Allentown Symphony Association. El Sistema has also received community partnership grants from the Community Foundation. Sheila Evans, Executive Director of the Allentown Symphony Association, and Steven Liu, Director of El Sistema Lehigh Valley, spoke about this valuable program at the reception. El Sistema Lehigh Valley brings underserved and special needs youth within the Allentown School District a free opportunity to develop life skills learned by participating in high-quality daily music instruction, large ensemble experience and performances, and academic tutoring within a safe and nurturing environment. The children who participate were found to have higher test scores in mathematics and science and increased attendance at school. The program also helps to provide an identity and purpose for the students.

The reception concluded with a powerful message from Linda Sheftel, the 2014 Vision in Philanthropy Award recipient, about the power of community philanthropy. Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the passing of Linda's son, Justin, whose life inspired the establishment of two funds at the Community Foundation. The Board of Governors felt very strongly that Linda Sheftel be given the 2014 Vision in Philanthropy Award as a way to recognize Linda for her deep and meaningful commitment to philanthropy in the Lehigh Valley and the strength she demonstrates in honoring the life of her son.

40 2015 Professional Advisors Seminar

On January 22, 2015, LVCF was happy to host over 75 of the Lehigh Valley’s professional advisors at Saucon Valley Country Club for a seminar on Charitable Client Conversations: Philanthropic Case Studies. A panel of local experts presented examples on charitable giving.

The event would not have been such a success without the panelists’ commitment to the message of the Community Foundation. LVCF would like to thank the panelists for their time and dedication: Dolores Laputka of Norris McLaughlin & Marcus (Moderator); Susan Schupp of PNC Bank Wealth Management; Geoffrey Borda of Abraham, Borda, Corvino, Butz, LaValva & Co. PC; Ed Lentz of Fitzpatrick Lentz & Bubba; and, Judith Harris of Norris McLaughlin & Marcus.

Following the seminar, LVCF proudly presented the 2015 Service to Philanthropy Award to J. Marshall Wolff. The Service to Philanthropy Award recognizes a professional advisor that understands and appreciates the importance of philanthropy in the community, the diverse advantages of charitable giving for clients, and the value of philanthropy in financial, estate, retirement and wealth management planning.

LVCF recognized Marshall for his commitment to the Foundation’s growth. After nearly two decades of service, Marshall completed his final term as a member of LVCF’s Board of Governors in December 2014. He has dutifully participated in the work of the Community Foundation, and we sincerely thank him for being a reliable and unwavering voice for the wise investment and management of Community Foundation assets.
