T)OPULARLY, the lighthouse seems to be looked A upon as a modern invention, and if we con- sider it in its present form, completeness, and efficiency, we shall be justified in limiting its history to the last centuries but as soon as men to down two ; began go to the sea in ships, they must also have begun to ex- perience the need of beacons to guide them into secure channels, and warn them from hidden dangers, and the pressure of this need would be stronger in the night even than in the day. So soon as a want is man's invention hastens to it and strongly felt, supply ; we may be sure, therefore, that in the very earliest ages of civilization lights of some kind or other were introduced for the benefit of the mariner. It may very well be that these, at first, would be nothing more than fires kindled on wave-washed promontories, 10 LIGHTHOUSES OF ANTIQUITY.

  • Tom Petrie's Reminiscences
I TOM PETRIE'S REMINISCENCES OF EARLY QUEENSLAND (Dating from 1837.) RECORDED BY HIS DAUGHTER. BRISBANE: WATSON , FERGUSON & CO.. 1904. [COPYRIGHT.] This is a blank page To MY FATHER, TOM PETRIE, WHOSE FAITHFUL MEMORY HAS SUPPLIED THE MATERIAL FOR THIS BOOK. PRINTED BY WATSON, FERGUSON &' CO. QUEEN ST., BRISBANE. This is a blank page This is a blank page NOTE. THE greater portion of the contents of this book first ap- peard in the " Queenslander " in the form of articles, and when those referring to the aborigines were pubished, Dr. Roth, author of " Ethnological Studies," etc., wrote the following letter to that paper :- TOM PETRIE' S REMINISCENCES (By C.C.P.) TO THE EDITOR. SIR,-lt is with extreme interest that I have perused the remarkable series of articles appearing in the Queenslander under the above heading, and sincerely trust that they will he subsequently reprinted. The aborigines of Australia are fast dying out, and with them one of the most interesting phases in the history and development of man. Articles such as these, referring to the old Brisbane blacks, of whom I believe but one old warrior still remains, are well worth permanently recording in convenient book form-they are, all of them, clear, straight-forward statements of facts- many of which by analogy, and from early records, I have been able to confirm and verify-they show an intimate and profound knowledge of the aboriginals with whom they deal, and if only to show with what diligence they have been written, the native names are correctly, i.e., rationally spelt.

We have particular expertise in water quality analysis and in assessing impacts on biodiversity and water quality associated with land use change. At the time of the initial public comment period for the proposed Colton Mine (August 2010), the MRCCC was not aware of the Referral until it was too late to make a submission and we did not make comment. However we have major concerns about the proposal and have met with Department of Environment Staff about the proposal on two occasions (February 2012 and February 2016). During these meetings we highlighted concerns about the water quality and ecological impacts on the Great Sandy Strait Ramsar Wetland and the many threatened and migratory species that use the Great Sandy Strait, as well as concerns about other EPBC listed threatened species including the vulnerable Wallum Sedgefrog (Litoria olongburensis).

  • Great Sandy Region Management Plan 1994
GREAT SANDY REGION Management Plan 1994 - Revised version September 2005 Note This management plan is not a statutory management plan under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, Recreation Areas Management Act 2006 or the Marine Parks Act 2004. It is considered a management statement for the purpose of providing management direction for the region. This plan is currently being reviewed. September 2011 This plan does not intend to affect, diminish or extinguish Native Title and associated rights. It is envisaged that all of the provisions in this Management Plan will be able to be implemented by or before the year 2010, subject to approval within normal budgetar y processes, or subject to special funding arrangements. Note that implementation of some management strategies might need to be phased in according to availability of resources. In 1994 the indicative cost of implementation of this Management Plan was $220 million over 16 years. The level of funding allocated to implementation of the Plan ultimately depends on the budget priorities of the Commonwealth, State and local governments, the extent to which funding can be met from permit fees and other user charges, and the level of participation by the private sector.
