HEAD COACH • 18TH SEASON • CANISIUS ‘90 Mike Sisti starts his 18th year as head coach of the women’s hockey program, the only head coach the program has ever known.

In 17 years, Sisti has turned a small-college women’s hockey program into one of Division I’s premier powers. The Lakers have won 429 games, have captured 15 straight conference titles, and made ten consecutive trips to the national tournament - an NCAA record - before the streak was halted in the 2014 season. Sisti has 187 wins compared to just 20 losses in conference play during his tenure as Lakers’ head coach. Among other notables, Sisti recruited and coached , who became a four-time All-American while at Mercyhuhurst, the leading scorer in Division I women’s hockey history, a two-time Olympic gold medalist for Team Canada, and hockey MVP of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Forward garnered the team’s first in 2010 while Agosta was a four-time finalist for the sport’s highest honor.

Last season, the Lakers (19-11-5) collected their 14th straight College Hockey America (CHA) regular season title and won the CHA Tournament championship against Syracuse before bowing to Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Sisti and the top performers on Sisti’s 2015-16 squad were recognized individually at the CHA Tournament Banquet. Sisti was named CHA Coach of the BY THE YEARS Year, while freshman forward Rachael Smith recieved Rookie of the Year honors and freshman goalie Sarah McDonnell recieved the CHA Goaltender’s Trophy. NCAA Frozen Four Appearences: 4 (2009, 2010, 2013, 2014) After three years as an assistant men’s coach at Canisius College in NCAA Frozen Four Runners-up: 1 (2009) Buffalo, Sisti came to Mercyhurst in 1993 and spent his first six years as men’s varsity assistant coach and then associate head coach. He was named head coach of the new women’s program in March of 1999.

His efforts with the women’s program have earned him numerous honors. Sisti was named Division I Coach of the Year in 2005 and USCHO.com Coach of the Year in 2007. He has been recognized as a finalist for Division I Coach of the Year on six occasions. Conference coaches have also named him coach of the year five times - four times in the CHA.

Off the ice, Sisti has developed his players into outstanding student-athletes. For 17 consecutive years, the team’s cumulative grade point average has been above a 3.0. The Lakers have also been very active in the community. The team annually donates over 200 hours on various community service projects, and spends time at several local schools instructing students on life skills.

Prior to coaching, Sisti played four years of collegiate hockey at Canisius College. A four-year letterwinner, Sisti ranks among Canisius’s best in several categories, including career points (163) and goals (74). He also shares the school record for most goals in a game with four and holds the single-season record for hat tricks with six. Sisti helped the Griffs to a 21-11-0 record with 13 goals and 19 assists as a freshman. He was named the team’s top forward for his 33-goal, 57-point effort in 1988-89, and served as team captain for his senior season in 1989-90. A 1990 graduate of Canisius, Sisti was inducted into the Canisius Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Sisti and wife, Nicole, reside in Erie. WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME OUT...

St. Lawrence had a chance to pull back within a goal on a power play with 3:42 remaining. The Saints pulled Harrison to create a six-on-four, but Convery and the Lakers defense stymied the St. Lawrence power play and drew a boarding call with 1:19 to go on a power play of their own. On the advantage, Hartwick netted her second of the game for a team-high 11 season goals with 1:03 remaining to put the game to the eventual 5-2 final score.

“I was proud of our staff and players for how we prepared for this game and the pride and energy we were able to compete with,” said head coach Michael Sisti. “It was a great way to start 2017.” Mercyhurst (7-13-1) is now 7-0 when scoring three or more goals this season. The Lakers did not allow a power play goal on six chances. Convery was named the game’s first star with 32 saves on 34 shots. Hartwick’s two-goal, one assist effort earned her second star. MERCYHURST (7-14-1, 3-5-0 CHA) vs. R.I.T (3-18-1, 1-6-1 CHA)

The Mercyhurst women’s hockey team plays its first home series since late November when it hosts the Rochester Institute of Technology on Jan. 13-14 at Mercyhurst Ice Center. This two-game set is the first of 12-straight games the Lakers will play against College Hockey America conference opponents to finish the regular season.

The Matchup -Mercyhurst leads the all-time series 15-3-0, outscoring R.I.T. 71-25 over all matchups. -The Lakers swept the Tigers in all four meetings a season ago, with their most recent victories being 4-1 and 2-0 wins at R.I.T. in February 2016. -The Tigers last win against the Lakers came in the 2014-15 CHA conference tournament semifinals in a 4-1 upset.

Scouting the Tigers -R.I.T. enters the weekend with a 3-18-1 overall record with a 1-6-1 mark in conference play. -The Tigers should have fresh legs with this matchup being the first they have played since Dec. 10. -R.I.T. lost its last three in a row and the team’s last win came back on Nov. 26, a 3-1 victory against R.P.I. -Kendall Cornine leads all Tigers with six goals, including two game-winners, and five assists for an overall total of 11 points.

Laker Outlook -Mercyhurst is fresh off a 1-1 series split against #3 ranked St. Lawrence in the “D1 in D.C.” series played in the Washing- ton, D.C. metropolitan area. -The Lakers are now 7-0 when scoring three or more goals this season. -Brooke Hartwick continues to pace the Lakers in points with 21. She was named CHA Player of the Week with 2 goals and an assist at “D1 in D.C.” -Sam Isbell earned her first CHA Rookie of the Week award after tallying her fourth and fifth goals of the season against St. Lawrence. -Jessica Convery is now 5-7-1 this season and maintains a sub-2.0 goals against average (1.93). She was named CHA Goalie of the Week to complete a Laker sweep of the CHA weekly awards for the week ending Jan. 8.
