The Lakers upset Cornell in the na onal quarterfi nals before bowing to eventual na onal champion Clarkson in the semifi nals. It marked their fourth overall appearance at the Frozen Four. The Lakers were na onal runners-up in 2009. The Lakers fi nished 6th na onally in the fi nal TEAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS 2013-14 USCHO.com Division I poll. YEAR ACCOMPLISMENT Several Lakers earned post-season accolades. Senior forward Chris ne Bestland was selected CHA’s Player-of-the-Year, was 2000-01 GLWHA Regular Season Champion named a Second Team All-American, and made USCHO.com’s third team. She also was chosen Mercyhurst’s senior Female 2001-02 GLWHA Regular Season Champion Athlete-of-the-Year. GLWHA Championship Sophomore forward Emily Janiga and junior defenseman Molly Byrne joined Bestland on the CHA First Team while senior 2002-03 CHA Regular Season Champion forward Chris e Cicero made the second squad. Byrne was also named the conference’s Best Defenseman while junior CHA Championship foward Shelby Bram was honored with the Best Defensive Forward award. Sis was chosen as the CHA Coach-of-the-Year. 2003-04 CHA Regular Season Champion Addi onally, 10 players made the CHA All-Academic Team. In 2012-13, the Lakers were looked to have the start of a rebuilding period a er welcoming 12 new players to the varsity roster. The Lakers under the lead of Sis proved everyone wrong CHA Championship a er the Lakers went 26-7-1 throughout the regular season to capture their 12th consecu ve CHA regular season tle, and 2004-05 CHA Regular Season Champion won their 11th conference tournament championship. Captain Chris ne Bestland was named CHA Player of the Year a er CHA Championship pos ng a career high 72 points in the season. Goaltender Stephanie Ciampa captured the CHA tournament MVP for her performances. NCAA Appearance 2005-06 CHA Regular Season Champion A er seven straight wins, the Lakers found themselves compe ng against No. 2 Cornell University and con nue to break their CHA Championship NCAA Tournament appearance record of nine straight. Sophomore Jenna Dingeldein scored in a thrilling over me game to NCAA Appearance advance Mercyhurst to their third NCAA Frozen Four appearance. In Minnesota, the Lakers faced Boston University where they fell 4-1. The Lakers, under captain Chris ne Bestland, fi nished their season with an overall record of 29-7-1. 2006-07 CHA Regular Season Champion CHA Championship Mercyhurst went 23-8-3 throughout the 2011-12 regular season and fi nished 8-1-3 in the College Hockey America (CHA). NCAA Appearance The Lakers fell in the CHA Championship Title game to Robert Morris University, but s ll received a bid to the NCAA Na onal Tournament for the eight straight year, where they fell in the semifi nals to Wisconsin. Goaltender Hillary Pa enden set an 2007-08 Co-CHA Regular Season Champion NCAA Division I record winning 100 career-wins at Mercyhurst. Forward Bailey Bram scored over 200 points to be the only CHA Championship fourth player in the program history to do so. NCAA Appearance 2008-09 CHA Regular Season Champion Mercyhurst fi nished their 2011 season 29-6, with perfect 16-0-0 ending in CHA. The Lakers took the CHA Championship tle for the tenth consecu ve me and took the regular season tle for the 11th year. The team qualifi ed for the seventh CHA Championship consecu ve me to the NCAA tournament before falling to Boston University in the quarterfi nals. NCAA Appearance NCAA Frozen Four Hurst fi nished the 2010 season 29-6, with a 16-0 mark in CHA. The team qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament, before losing Na onal Finalists in the quarterfi nal round. Sis recruited and coached Meghan Agosta, who was a four- me All-American, leading scorer in Division I women’s hockey history, two- me Olympic gold medalist for Team Canada, and hockey MVP of the 2010 Vancouver 2009-10 CHA Regular Season Champion Olympic Games. CHA Championship NCAA Appearance In 2009, the Lakers built a 30-3-3 record and made their second straight appearance at the Frozen Four, fi nishing as na onal semifi nalists a er a 3-2 over me loss to eventual na onal fi nalist Cornell. Sis ’s squad ranked No. 1 in the country for 23 NCAA Frozen Four weeks, led the country in almost every sta s cal category, including scoring off ense, scoring margin, short-handed goals 2010-11 CHA Regular Season Champion scored and winning percentage, and broke the NCAA record for most short-handed goals scored in a season (21). They also CHA Championship captured their eighth CHA championship in addi on to winning the regular-season trophy. NCAA Appearance Several players had breakout seasons, with the duo of then-juniors 2011-12 CHA Regular Season Champion BY THE YEARS Vicki Bendus and Jesse Scanzano leading the way. Bendus became NCAA Appearance the fi rst Mercyhurst player to win the Pa y Kazmaier award a er 2012-13 CHA Regular Season Champion totaling a career-best 65 points. She also won the NCAA Elite 88 Award and was named a First Team All-American by the American CHA Championship YEAR OVERALL CONF Hockey Coaches Associa on and the College Sports Informa on NCAA Appearance 1999-00 23-6-0 NA Directors of America. Scanzano scored 65 points and was named a NCAA Frozen Four Second Team AHCA All-American. 2013-14 CHA Regular Season Champion 2000-01 14-16-3 5-1-2 In 2008-09, Sis guided the Lakers on another remarkable run. NCAA Appearance 2001-02 24-8-1 8-0-0 A er star ng the year 3-4, Mercyhurst went on to win 26 of its NCAA Frozen Four next 27 games to capture its seventh straight CHA crown and 2002-03 25-8-1 6-0-0 qualify for the NCAA Tournament. 2003-04 26-6-4 11-1-0 Entering the tournament with an 0-4 record, Sis ’s squad wouldn’t let history repeat itself. The Lakers’ fi h consecu ve na onal 2004-05 28-7-2 11-0-1 tournament appearance saw the team win twice, defea ng St. Lawrence 3-1 before a heart-stopping 5-4 victory over Minnesota in the NCAA semifi nal at the Women’s Frozen Four. Mercyhurst’s 2005-06 23-8-6 10-0-2 run, however, ended as top-ranked Wisconsin shut out the Lakers in the na onal championship for its third tle in the past four years. 2006-07 32-2-3 11-0-1 Sis saw many of his players excel during the storybook run. Team captain Meghan Agosta fi nished the season as a First Team All- 2007-08 26-8-3 11-2-1 American and a top-three fi nalist for the Pa y Kazmaier award in addi on to being named CHA Player of the Year for the third-straight year. She led the team with 41 goals and 78 points, both of which set new records, and became the fi rst player in program history to 2008-09 31-6-0 16-0-0 score 100 goals and 200 points. Assistant captain Valerie Chouinard was named CHA Student-Athlete of the Year and joined Agosta as the second player to score 200 points in a career with a goal and an assist against Minnesota. 2009-10 30-3-3 14-1-1 The 2008-09 season was a turning point for Sis and the Lakers a er several seasons of promising runs coming to an abrupt ending. 2010-11 29-6-0 16-0-0 The four previous Laker squads combined for a 99-25-14 record, but saw their seasons end with a one-goal loss in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament. 2011-12 23-8-3 8-1-3 Prior to coaching, Sis played four years of collegiate hockey at Canisius College. A four-year le erwinner, Sis ranks in the top-5 in 2012-13 29-7-1 17-3-0 several categories, including career points (163) and goals (74). He also shares the school record for most goals in a game with four and holds the single-season record for hat tricks with six. Sis helped the Griff s to a 21-11-0 record with 13 goals and 19 assists as a 2013-14 24-9-4 15-3-2 freshman. He was named the team’s top forward for his 33-goal, 57-point eff ort in 1988-89, and served as team captain for his senior 2014-15 18-7-3 9-4-1 season in 1989-90. A 1990 graduate of Canisius, Sis was inducted into the Canisius Athle c Hall of Fame in 2002.
