May 9, 1995—Niagara University announces plans to build an on-campus ice arena that would field a men’s Division I hockey team for the 1996 season and start women’s Division I play in 1997.

October 25, 1995—Niagara Athletic Director Mike Jankowski announces that Blaise MacDonald will be the first head coach to stand behind the Purple Eagle bench.

June 1, 1996—Blaise MacDonald announces the hiring of David Burkholder as assistant coach.

May 10, 1996—The grand opening of the new NU Ice Complex on campus—a $6 million facility will be the home of the Purple Eagles’ first varsity team for the 1996-97 season.

October 25, 1996—Niagara plays its first game as a varsity program as an independent, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Mercyhurst Lakers in the Fredonia Blue Devil Tournament. Freshman Mikko Sivonen had the first goal in the school’s history, with assists going to Peter DeSantis and Chris MacKenzie. Goalie Greg Gardner had 24 saves.

October 26, 1996—Niagara wins its first hockey game in program history, beating Findlay, 6-1, in the consola- tion game of the Fredonia Blue Devil Tournament. Mike Isherwood had two goals for the Eagles. Blaise MacDonald January 25, 1997—The Purple Eagles earn their first shutout in program history, beating Buffalo State 7-0.

January 23, 1998—Niagara hockey program took a step forward by posting its first every victory over a Division I opponent. Three goals by center Kyle Martin carried the Purple Eagles to a 4-1 victory over the Air Force Academy before a crowd of about 800 at the Niagara Ice Complex.

February 28, 1998—With a 2-0 win over Hobart, Niagara is the ECAC West Division III Regular Season Champion.

March 7, 1998—Niagara closes its season, and plays its last game as an NCAA Division III member, earning a 5-2 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology in the ECAC West Championship game.

May 11, 1998—Father Paul L. Golden announces that 1965 NU graduates Robert and Connie Dwyer of Summit, N.J., have pledged $3 million to the expansion of the arena and the further development of the men’s and women’s hockey programs.

October 16, 1998—Niagara plays its first contest as a Division I program, a 6-5 overtime loss to No. 2 Michigan.

October 17, 1998—The Purple Eagles pocket their first win as a Division I program, upsetting defending NCAA Champion No. 2 Michigan, 2-1, on the road.

November 21, 1998—Niagara University earns its first shutout in Division I play, earned by Greg Gardner in 4-0 victory over Nebraska-Omaha.

June 16, 1999—Niagara becomes a charter member of , joining two other independent teams (Air Force and Army) and three former Division II teams (Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State and Findlay).

October 10, 1999—Purple Eagles open league play against Air Force in Anchorage, Alaska as a member of College Hockey America, a new alliance that includes Air Force, Alabama-Huntsville, Army, Bemidji (Minn.) State and Findlay (Ohio) College. Niagara comes out with a 3-0 victory as Mikko Sivonen, Peter DeSantis and Randy Harris find the back of the net, and Greg Gardner pushed aside 16 shots.

October 17, 1999—Senior goalie Greg Gardner stops 21 shots to shutout Boston Univer- sity, 3-0, in the ECAC Face-Off Classic in Albany, N.Y.

October 20, 1999—Men’s hockey ranks 15th in the USA Today/American Hockey Maga- zine Poll. It’s the first time the Purple Eagles have been placed in the top-15 poll.

March 12, 2000—In just the team’s fourth season, Niagara wins the inaugural College Hockey America Championship with a 3-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville.

March 20, 2000—The Purple Eagles are selected for the NCAA Division I hockey cham- pionship for the first time in school history. Niagara, seeded sixth among six teams in the West Regional, face the No. 3 seed University of New Hampshire in its opening game in Greg Gardner Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.

March 24, 2000—Niagara wins the program’s first NCAA tournament game with a 4-1 upset victory over No. 7 New Hampshire to advance to the Elite Eight. Greg Gardner finished with 34 saves and Mikko Sivonen scored two goals. Ryan Harris and Kyle Martin added the other two scores.

March 25, 2000—Niagara’s inaugural class of seniors plays their last game as Purple Eagles after a 4-1 loss to University of North Dakota in the quarter- finals of the NCAA Tournament. All-freshman team from 1996-97 includes goaltender Greg Gardner, forwards Mike Isherwood, Mikko Sivonen, Peter DeSantis, Kyle Martin, Jay Kasperek, John Maksymiu and Jon Marshall, and defenseman Nate Handrahan, Chris MacKenzie and Colin Rows.

October 7, 2000—Niagara opens the season with a home game at against No. 14 Lake Superior State, the first time in the five-year history of the program that the Purple Eagles will open at home.

April 12, 2001—Former assistant coach David Burkholder is named the new head coach at Niagara. Burkholder, who signed a four-year contract, replaces Blaise MacDonald after serving as the assistant for the last five seasons.

November 9, 2002—Niagara University goalie Rob Bonk shook off an early Michigan State goal and made 25 saves to lead the Purple Eagles to a 2-1 upset of the 13th-ranked Spartans in Munn Arena in East Lansing, Mich.

March 13, 2003—Niagara men’s hockey forward Joe Tallari is selected as the College Hockey America Player of the Year to become the first non-goaltender to win the award in the last three years. The junior became just the second CHA player to reach 50 points in a season with his conference record of 54 points on 26 goals and 28 assists.

March 20, 2003— Niagara hockey forward Joe Tallari is the first Purple Eagle in program his- tory to be selected as a top-10 finalist for the 2003 Hobey Baker award. For the first time in Hobey history, a member of College Hockey America (CHA) is a top-10 finalist. Tallari led the league in points and goals and is 9th in the nation in points. He is a First Team CHA All Star and was selected as the league’s Player of the Year.

June 5, 2003— Niagara senior Bernie Sigrist signs a professional hockey contract with the Langnau Tigers of the NLA Swiss A League.

October 25, 2003—Niagara University’s men’s hockey team produces one of its best victories in its eight-year history. The Purple Eagles knock off the 2003 national runner-up and then- No. 1 New Hampshire, 5-2, in the Punch Imlach College Hockey Showcase in HSBC Arena.

March 11, 2004— Junior forward Barret Ehgoetz headlines the individual CHA awards for the Purple Eagles, named CHA Co-Player of the Year. Ehgoetz, who scored 25 goals and had 50 points, was also named Inside College Hockey CHA Player of the Year and earned his first CHA All-Conference accolades, being named First Team All-CHA.

March 14, 2004—Niagara defeats the Bemidji State Beavers 4-3 in overtime for the 2004 CHA Championship.

March 27, 2004—The team is set up against No. 4 Boston College in the program’s second Joe Tallari NCAA Tournament trip, eventually falling 5-2 to the Terriers at Manchester, N.H.

April 6, 2004— Niagara University senior forward Chris Welch signs a contract with the of the United Hockey League (UHL). The Jackals drafted Welch in the fourth round of this year’s North American Amateur Draft with the 37th pick overall.

April 7, 2004— Niagara University senior forward Joe Tallari signs an amateur tryout agreement with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the (AHL).

May 24, 2004—Niagara announces a $2 million renovation of its nine-year-old hockey arena and will overhaul the seating, entertainment and press box areas. The project is scheduled to begin after the 2004-05 season.

September 9, 2005— Joe Tallari signs with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the Ameri- can Hockey League. Tallari played 11 games for the ’ top affiliate last season on a professional tryout contract, picking up four goals, three assists and two penalty minutes.

December 30, 2005— Although No. 14/13 New Hampshire used two goalies who were selected in the NHL Draft, the Niagara University men’s hockey team peppers the Wildcats with six goals en route to a 6-2 upset. March 24, 2013—Niagara becomes the first Atlantic Hockey team to be awarded an at-large berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament when the selection committee released the field of 16 teams. This is the program’s second-ever at-large bid into the national tournament, and it is the program’s fourth trip to the NCAA Tournament.

January 24, 2014 — Freshman TJ Sarcona’s highlight-reel goal against RIT receives national attention when it was named the top-5 play on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top-10 later that night, and was also aired on ESPN’s Olbermann Show.

March 6, 2014 — Freshman defenseman Vincent Muto is Niagara’s lone representative on the 2013-14 Atlantic Hockey Association All-Rookie Team after amassing 16 points off four goals and 12 assists, good for sixth on the team in scoring and tops among NU defenseman.

March 7, 2014 — Niagara dropped the AIC Yellow Jackets, 1-0, in double overtime, marking the first time in the program’s 18-year history the Purple Eagles battled an opponent into a second period of extra time. The 84:43 minutes played during that contest was the longest game in Niagara history.

March 13, 2014 — Defenseman Kevin Ryan is named to the 2013-14 All-AHA Third Team after suiting up for 26 of 27 conferences games this season, scoring five goals and five assists for 10 points in those contests.

September 12, 2014 — Former Niagara hockey defenseman Kevin Ryan is added to the Columbus Blue Jackets roster that is taking part in the Annual National Hockey League Prospect Tournament from Sept. 12-16 at the Center Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich.

December 6, 2015 — Former Niagara hockey forward Ryan Rashid (‘14) makes his AHL debut with the Charlotte Checkers.

March 6, 2015 — Niagara freshman defenseman Keegan Harper is named to the Gladiator Custom Mouthguards All-Rookie Team by Atlantic Hockey. Among rookie defensemen, Harper ranked second in the conference and tied for 11th nationally with 17 points in 36 games played.

March 7, 2015 — Goaltender Jackson Teichroeb makes a career-high 58 saves in a triple-overtime play- off contest with Holy Cross, but the Crusaders prevailed 2-1. With the series tied at one game apiece, Teichroeb came back the next night and made 47 saves in a 5-3 Niagara victory, helping the Purple Eagles to a fourth-consecutive AHA quarterfinal. March 12, 2016 — Nick Cecere, a three-year Niagara defenseman and a 2015-16 team captain, signs a contract with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL.

April 6, 2016 — Defenseman Matt Chiarantano signs a standard player contract with the of the ECHL, making his professional debut that same night.

November 2, 2016 — Niagara freshman forward Kris Spriggs is named Rookie of the Month for the month of October by Atlantic Hockey. Spriggs led Niagara with six points (2+4) in seven games to start the 2016-17 season. It is the first time a Niagara player wins a Rookie of the Month honor since 2006.

- In just the team’s fourth season, the senior-laden Purple Eagles squad went 30-8-4.

- Won the inaugural CHA Championship with a 3-2 victory over Alabama- Hunstville.

- Made the NCAA Tournament for the first-time ever, defeating New Hamp- shire to advance to the Elite Eight, before falling to eventual champion North Dakota.

- Mikko Sivonen led the squad with 50 points (24-26-50), with Mike Isher- wood pocketing 49 points (16-33-49). Greg Gardner owned a 1.53 goals- against average and a .936 save percentage between the pipes.

2000 CHA Tournament Champions

- Niagara finished the season with a 21-15-3 mark overall, while going 14-6-0 in conference play.

- Ended the season with the second-most wins in program history (21).

- The 2003-04 Niagara Purple Eagles defeated the Bemidji State Beavers, 4-3 in overtime for the 2004 CHA Championship.

- Earned the program’s second NCAA Tournament trip, falling to Boston College, 5-2, at Verizon Wireless Arena, in Manchester, N.H. on Mar. 27.

- Junior Barret Ehgoetz led the team with 52 points (25-27-52), with senior Joe Tallari picking up 33 points (16-17-33).

2004 CHA Tournament Champions

- Ended its season with a 22-11-4 record, the second best record to the 99-00 team who ended with 30 wins on the year.

- Saw the end of the 22-game home unbeaten streak at Dwyer Arena, while also going unbeaten in nine straight games near the end of the season.

- Defeated the Bemidji State Beavers 3-2 on home ice to win the 2008 CHA Championship.

- Went to the program’s third NCAA Tournament, where they took on Mich- igan.
