May 9, 1995— announced plans to build an on-campus ice arena that would house a men’s varsity hockey team in the 1996 season and a women’s varsity hockey team in 1997.

October 25, 1995—Niagara Athletic Director Mike Jankowski announced that Blaise MacDonald would be the first head coach to stand behind the bench for the Purple Eagles.

June 1, 1996—Blaise MacDonald announced the hiring of Dave Burkholder as assistant coach.

May 10, 1996—The grand opening of the new NU Ice Complex on campus, a $6 million facility that will be the home of Niagara’s first varsity men’s hockey team for the 1996-97 season.

October 25, 1996—Niagara played its first game as a varsity program as an independent, dropping a 3-1 deci- sion to Mercyhurst in the Fredonia Blue Devil Tournament. Freshman Mikko Sivonen had the first goal in the school’s history, with assists going to Peter DeSantis and Chris MacKenzie. Goalie Greg Gardner had 24 saves.

October 26, 1996 —Behind two Mike Isherwood goals, Niagara won its first hockey game in program history, beating Findlay, 6-1, in the consolation game of the Fredonia Blue Devil Tournament. Blaise MacDonald January 25, 1997—The Purple Eagles earned their first shutout in program history, beating Buffalo State, 7-0.

November 30, 1997—Niagara and Canisius co-hosted the first annual Punch Imlach College Hockey Showcase at Marine Midland Arena in Buffalo. The Purple Eagles went on to drop their matchup against Cornell, 2-0.

January 23, 1998—The program took a step forward by posting its first victory over a Division I opponent. Three goals by center Kyle Martin carried the Purple Eagles to a 4-1 victory over Air Force before a crowd of about 800 at the Niagara Ice Complex.

February 28, 1998—With a 2-0 win over Hobart, Niagara won the ECAC West Division III Regular Season championship.

March 7, 1998—Niagara closed its season - and played its last game as an NCAA Division III squad - earning a 5-2 victory over RIT in the ECAC West Championship game.

May 11, 1998—Niagara University president Father Paul L. Golden announced that 1965 NU graduates Robert and Connie Dwyer of Summit, N.J., pledged $3 million to the expansion of the arena and the further development of the men’s and women’s hockey programs. In recognition of their generosity, the school announced that the facility would be renamed .

October 16, 1998—Niagara played its first ever contest as a Division I program. Niagara skated to a tough, 6-5, overtime loss to defending national champion and second-ranked Michigan.

October 17, 1998—The Purple Eagles picked up their first win as a DI team, upsetting defending national champion, No. 2 Michigan, 2-1, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The win was also the program’s first over a nationally-ranked opponent.

November 21, 1998—Niagara University earned its first shutout in DI play, with Greg Gardner backstopping a 4-0 victory over Omaha.

June 16, 1999—Niagara is announced as a charter member of (CHA), joining two other independent teams (Air Force and Army West Point) and three former Division II teams (Alabama-Huntsville, Bemidji State and Findlay).

Greg Gardner (‘00) October 20, 1999—Men’s hockey landed at 15th in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Poll. It was the first time the Purple Eagles earned a place in a national poll.

March 20, 2000—The Purple Eagles are selected for the NCAA Division I hockey championship for the first time in school history. Niagara - seeded sixth among six teams in the West Regional - is scheduled to face the No. 3 seed New Hampshire in its first NCAA Tournament in Minneapolis.

March 24, 2000—Niagara won the program’s first NCAA tournament game with a 4-1 upset over No. 7 New Hampshire at Mariucci Arena to advance to the Elite Eight. Greg Gardner finished with 34 saves and Mikko Sivonen scored two goals. Ryan Harris and Kyle Martin added the other two scores.

March 25, 2000—Niagara’s inaugural class of seniors played its last game as Purple Eagles after a 4-1 loss to North Dakota in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Freshmen from 1996-97 included goaltender Greg Gardner, forwards Mike Isherwood, Mikko Sivonen, DeSantis, Kyle Martin, Jay Kasperek, John Maksymiu and Jon Marshall, and defensemen Nate Handrahan, Chris MacKenzie and Colin Rows.

October 7, 2000—Niagara opened the season with a home game at Dwyer Arena against No. 14 Lake Superior State. It marks the first time in the five- year history of the program that the Purple Eagles open at home.

April 12, 2001—Burkholder is named the second head coach of Niagara’s men’s hockey team. Burkholder, who signed a four-year contract, replaced MacDonald after serving as an assistant for the last five seasons.

March 14-16, 2002—Niagara University and Dwyer Arena hosted the CHA Men’s Ice Hock- ey Tournament for the first time. Niagara was ousted by Air Force, 5-3, in the quarterfinal found. Wayne State defeated Alabama-Huntsville, 5-4 in overtime to win the conference title.

November 9, 2002—Goalie Rob Bonk shook off an early Michigan State goal and made 25 saves to lead the Purple Eagles to a 2-1 upset of the 13th-ranked Spartans in Munn Arena in East Lansing, Mich.

December 14, 2002—Trailing 5-0 more than halfway through a road game at UMass Lowell, Niagara mounted an improbable comeback. The Purple Eagles scored four goals (on eight shots) in 5:29 to make it a 5-4 game at the second intermission. 5:19 into the third, Joe Tal- lari’s second goal of the game tied it a t 5-5. With 4:11 remaining in regulation, Justin Cross scored to put Niagara ahead, 6-5. Allen Barton gave up one goal - 10 seconds after coming off the bench - in relief, but made 14 saves over the final 31:17 to help aid the comeback. The River Hawks, who had never lost to Niagara prior to the contest (2-0-0), also had Blaise MacDonald behind the bench as head coach.

March 13, 2003—Forward Joe Tallari was selected as the CHA Player of the Year, the first non-goaltender to win the award in the league’s first four seasons. The junior became just the second CHA player to reach 50 points in a season with a conference-record 54 (26 G, 28 A).

March 20, 2003— Tallari became the first Purple Eagle in program history to be selected as a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. For the first time in the history of the award, a Joe Tallari member of CHA was named a finalist. Tallari led the league in points (54) and goals (26) and was ninth in the country in points.

April 10-12, 2003— Niagara University, along with and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) co-hosted the 2003 Men’s Frozen Four at HSBC Arena in Buffalo. It was the first time the national championship would be decided in Western .

October 25, 2003—The Purple Eagles knocked off the 2003 national runner-up and then-No. 1 New Hampshire, 5-2, in the consolation game of the Punch Imlach College Hockey Showcase in HSBC Arena. The contest was the final game of the event, which began in 1997. In nine all-time games in the showcase, the Purple Eagles went 5-4

March 11, 2004— Junior forward Barret Ehgoetz was named CHA Co-Player of the Year. Ehgoetz, who had 50 points (25 G, 25 A), was also named Inside College Hockey CHA Player of the Year and earned his first CHA All-Conference accolades, being named First Team All-CHA.

March 14, 2004—Niagara defeats Bemidji State, 4-3 in overtime, to win the second CHA crown in program history.

March 27, 2004—Niagara fell to No. 4 Boston Col., 5-2, in the program’s second NCAA Tournament trip, in Manchester, N.H.

May 24, 2004—Niagara University announced a $2 million renovation of Dwyer Arena to overhaul the seating, entertainment and press box areas.

December 30, 2005— Although No. 14/13 New Hampshire used two goalies who were NHL Draft picks, Niagara hammers the Wildcats en route to a 6-2 upset. Jeff Van Nynatten made 49 saves.

December 31, 2005— Former Niagara center Matt Ryan made his NHL debut with the L.A. Kings against the , becoming the first Purple Eagle to play in an NHL regular season game.

February 11, 2006— Niagara defeats Air Force, 6-2, at Dwyer Arena. The win kick- started a program-record 22-game unbeaten streak at home.

March 8, 2006— Senior forward Justin Cross was selected to compete in the first- ever NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge for the East squad. The event took place on April 7 in Milwaukee, and was shown on ESPNU. Cross was the only male student- athlete from College Hockey America to be named to the main East or West rosters. Matt Caruana April 8, 2006— With the East and West scored all tied up, the NCAA Frozen Four Skills Challenge moved into a sudden death overtime shootout. Cross scored on Adam Hanna (St. John’s - Minn.) to keep the East alive and stave off a west win. Allison Paiano (Colgate) then won it for the East when she put the puck past Jill Luebke (Bemidji State).

February 24, 2007— Niagara and Robert Morris skate to a 3-3 tie at Dwyer Arena, marking the first time in program history the Purple Eagles did not lose at home (12-0-2).

March 1, 2007— Senior Sean Bentivoglio was chosen for the second annual Pontiac Frozen Four Skills Challenge, which took place on April 6 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Bentivoglio competed on the West side in the men’s competition.

March 8, 2007— Four Purple Eagles left the CHA Awards Banquet with accolades. Burkholder was selected as the league’s coach of the year, Sean Bentivoglio was named Player of the Year, Chris Moran was named Rookie of the Year, and Ted Cook picked up the Three-Star Award.

November 30, 2007— A 5-1 defeat to Bemidji State gave the Purple Eagles their first loss in Dwyer Arena since their Feb. 10, 2006 loss to Air Force, ending its 22-game unbeaten run at home (20-0-2). When it concluded, the streak was tied for the fifth-longest home-unbeaten streak in college his- tory.

March 14-16, 2008—Niagara University and Dwyer Arena hosted the CHA Men’s and Women’s Tournaments for the second time. It was just the second time both conference tournaments were jointly held at the same site.

March 16, 2008— Skating on home ice, Niagara won its third CHA championship with a 3-2 victory over Bemidji State, earning an automatic berth into the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The Purple Eagles scored two goals in the final four minutes of the second period and junior netminder Juliano Pagliero stopped all nine Beaver shots in the final period, including two incredible saves while on a 5-on-3 penalty kill, to preserve the victory.

March 28, 2008—Niagara took on No. 1 Michigan in the program’s third trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines won by a 5-1 score at in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Regionals.

November 11, 2008—Niagara scored three shorthanded goals in 69 seconds against Canisius. It was just the third time in NCAA history a team scored three goals on the same two-minute minor penalty. All three goals - by Sam Goodwin, Egor Mironov, and Dan Sullivan - were scored in the second period and were featured on Sportscenter’s Top 10 plays.

January 29, 2009— The Niagara University Athletics Department confirmed that the men’s hockey pro- gram would join the Association ahead of the 2010-11 season.

April 2, 2009— Former Niagara University men’s hockey standout Sean Bentivoglio became the second Purple Eagle to play in a regular-season NHL game. As a member of the , he laced up against the Montreal Canadiens. Including exhibition games, he also became one of just four Niagara products to skate for an NHL team.

March 12-13, 2010—Niagara University hosted the men’s College Hockey America Tournament for the second time in three years and the third time overall. April 7, 2010— Senior Chris Moran was selected to represent Niagara at the fifth-annual NCAA Frozen Four Skills Competition, to be held on April 9 at Ford Field in Detroit. After graduating from the program as the school’s all-time leader in assists (103), Moran was named to the Western team.

October 29, 2010— The Purple Eagles picked up their first-ever AHA win in its first-ever game in the league, downing Mercyhurst by a 5-3 score in front of 1,101 fans at Dwyer Arena.

December 26, 2010 - January 5, 2011— Along with the NHL’s , Niagara University and Dwyer Arena co-hosted the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championships.

February 11, 2011—On the five year anniversary of the win over Air Force that started the program record 22-game home unbeaten streak, the Purple Eagles start another one - against the same opponent. After losing the series opener to Air Force at Dwyer Arena the previous night, the Falcons and Purple Eagles skated to a 3-3 overtime tie. The draw was the start of another home unbeaten streak of 22 games that would tie the program record that ended in 2007.

March 17, 2011—Senior Paul Zanette was named the 2010- 11 AHA Player of the Year after scoring a career-high 29 goals, 26 assists and 55 points.

March 17, 2011— Zanette became the second Purple Eagle in the 15-year history of the program to be named a top-10 finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award.

April 8, 2011— Zanette was named the first All-American in program history. Zanette landed a spot on the Second Team All-American in the East. Matt Caruana scores against Michigan in the 2008 NCAA Tournament March 15, 2012—Senior Chris Noonan was named the 2012 AHA Goalie of the Year.

March 23, 2012— Sophomore forward Scott Arnold signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, making him the sixth Purple Eagle to ever sign an NHL contract.

May 3, 2012— Vince Rocco (‘09) earned a spot on Team Italy to play in the IIHF World Championship in Finland and Sweden.

November 30, 2012— Head coach David Burkholder earned his 200th win after No. 20 Niagara dropped Sacred Heart, 5-3, at Dwyer Arena.

February 16, 2013— No. 14 Niagara secured the outright Atlantic Hockey regular season title with two weeks remaining in the season. It marked the team’s first AHA regular-season title since the program entered into the conference in 2010-11.

March 16, 2013—Marc Zanette scored an overtime game-winner in the AHA quarterfinals to eliminate RIT in the second game of the best-of-three series. The victory at Dwyer Arena tied the 22-game home ice unbeaten streak (20-0-2) that was previously accomplished between Feb. 11, 2006 and Nov. 17, 2007. The win also gave Niagara its second-ever unbeaten season at home (16-0-1).

March 21, 2013— Goalie Carsen Chubak was named a top ten finalist for the 2013 Hobey Baker Award, becoming the third Purple Eagle in the 17-year history of the program to earn the distinction.

March 21, 2013— At the AHA banquet, Burkholder was named Coach of the Year, Chubak is selected as the Player of the Year, and Marc Zanette is named Best Defensive Forward.

March 24, 2013—Niagara became the first Atlantic Hockey team to be awarded an at-large berth to the NCAA Division I Men’s Hockey Tournament when the selection committee released the field of 16 teams. This was the program’s second-ever at-large bid into the national tournament, and it was the program’s fourth trip to the postseason.

September 30, 2013— For the first time in program history, the Purple Eagles begin a season as a nationally-ranked squad, earning the No. 20 spot in the USCHO.com Division I poll.

October 5, 2013— Clarkson halted Niagara’s 22-game home ice unbeaten streak by handing the Purple Eagles a 2-1 defeat. The streak, which dated back to the Purple Eagles’ 3-3 draw against Air Force on Feb. 11, 2012,

December 14, 2013— Niagara and RIT skated to a 2-2 tie at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY in the first-ever Frozen Frontier, presented by Greater Rochester Area Honda Dealers. It was the third outdoor game in the history of the AHA, and the first outdoor contest for both the Purple Eagles and Tigers.

January 24, 2014 — Niagara made a national television appearance on CBS Sports Network, dropping RIT, 3-0, at Dwyer Arena. Freshman TJ Sarcona’s highlight reel goal received national attention when it was featured as the No. 5 play on SportsCenter’s Top 10 later that night. March 7, 2014 — Niagara dropped AIC, 1-0, in double overtime, marking the first time in the program’s 18-year history the Purple Eagles battled an opponent into a second period of extra time.

March 7, 2015— Sixth-seed Holy Cross defeated 11-seed Niagara, 2-1, in triple overtime of the second game of the first round of the AHA playoffs. The game lasted 110:40, marked the first time the Purple Eagles skated into a sixth period, and was the longest game in program history.

March 8, 2015— 11th-seeded Niagara defeated sixth-seeded Holy Cross, 5-3, in the third and deciding game game of the first round of the AHA play- offs. Since the AHA updated its playoff format in 2012, Niagara became the first 11-seed team to upset the 6-seed in the first round of the postseason.

February 5, 2016 — Goaltender Jackson Teichroeb surpassed 2,000 career saves, becoming the fourth Niagara goaltender to reach the milestone - and the first to do so prior to his senior season.

February 26, 2017 — Niagara played in its second-ever outdoor game, taking on Robert Morris at Heinz Field in . Niagara was defeated by a final score of 5-1, with Sam Rennaker scoring the lone goal for the Purple Eagles.

March 5, 2017— 11th-seeded Niagara upset sixth-seeded RIT in three games during the first round of the Atlantic Hockey playoffs. After scoring three goals in the final four minutes, including two shorthanded goals, to take a 5-4 win in game one, Niagara secured a 4-1 victory in game three to take down the two-time defending conference champions and move on to the quarterfinals. For the second time in three seasons, 11-seed Niagara ousted the 6-seed in the opening round of the playoffs.

April 18, 2017— Niagara University, along with Canisius College and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is announced as a co-host of the 2019 Men’s Frozen Four that would be played at KeyBank Center in Buffalo. It marked the second time the national championship would be decided in , and the first since 2003.

December 17-22, 2017— With the IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo for the second time in eight years, Dwyer Arena hosted three exhibiiton games between four national teams - Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, and Switzerland - prior to the start of competition.

February 2, 2019— Freshman forward Ludwig Stenlund scored in his sixth straight game, establishing a new program record for consecutive games with goals.

February 5, 2019— After a 10-point January (5 G, 5 A), Stenlund was named the Hockey Commission- ers’ Association Rookie of the Month, awarded to the top rookie in the country. Stenlund became just the second player in program history to earn the honor.

February 9, 2019— Stenlund scored in a 6-3 loss to Sacred Heart to push his program record to eight straight games with at least one goal.

February 9, 2019— In the regular season finale against RIT, Luke Edgerton scored the game-winning goal with 1:40 left in regulation. Edgerton’s goal was a highlight-reel beauty that was featured on Sportscenter’s Top 10 the following morning.

Dave Burkholder Earns 200th Career Win March 22, 2019— Niagara and RIT went scoreless for 60 minutes in the AHA semifinal game at Harbor- center in Buffalo. 7:03 into the extra frame, Stenlund scored to push the Purple Eagles into their first-ever AHA Championship game.

March 23, 2019— For the fifth time in the postseason and the seventh time in the team’s last 10 games, Niagara goes past regulation against its opponent. AIC eventually won, 3-2, to claim the AHA title. The Purple Eagles played at least one overtime game in each of the four postseason rounds, going 3-2 in those contests.

November 8, 2019— Following an offseason change to Atlantic Hockey’s overtime format, Niagara plays its first-ever “bonus,” double-overtime game at RIT. The Purple Eagles got there thanks to Eric Cooley’s game-tying goal in the third period. Cooley scored again in the bonus, 3-on-3 second overtime to earn the extra point for Niagara. Both goals were spectacles in their own right, with various outlets featuring them, including the NHL, TSN’s Bar Down, and @NCAAIceHockey on Twitter and Instagram.

December 14, 2019— The offseason change to Atlantic Hockey’s overtime format produces another program first. On the road at AIC, Niagara plays into its first-ever shootout following 70 minutes of scoreless hockey. After two rounds, neither team was able to score on either goalie. In round three, Noah Delmas slipped the first puck of the game across the goal line, and Brian Wilson sealed the win with a save on the other end.

- Went to the program’s third NCAA Tournament, where they took on Mich- igan.

- Led by junior Vince Rocco (14-32-46), senior Matt Caruana (17-22-39) and junior Ted Cook (19-12-31). Niagara’s top goaltender was junior Juliano Pa- gliero, who posted a 17-7-4 record with a 2.32 GAA.
