These thirteen articles include topics that deals with a range of linguistics research areas and presents innovative and thought-provoking findings in the field. Al- Quran (Yarmouk University, Jordan), Kevin King (Northern Essex Community College), Benedicta Adokarley Lomotey (University of Ghana, Ghana), Teresa Wai See Ong (Griffith University, Australia), Nada Mohammed Salem and Stefanie Pillai (University of Malaya, Malaysia), Soh Siak Bie, Tam Shu Sim and Larisa Nikitina (University of Malaya, Malaysia), Md Jahurul Islam and Iftakhar Ahmed (Georgetown University, USA), Yeonok Hong (Sejong University, Republic of Korea), Abbas H. The opening article, Agglutination, Loanwords, and Japanese Morpholexical Categoryhood: Cross-Linguistic Factors in the Grammatical Handling of Verbs and Adjectives in Written English, by Matt Lucas, investigates how morpholexical subcategories of Japanese verbs and adjectives influence accuracy in relation to learners’ recognition of L2 morphological errors, and their ability to produce appropriate written L2 forms. Matt Lucas demonstrates the problematic nature of loanwords versus non-loanwords in L2 verb and adjective usage among Japanese EFL learners. This study, though focused on the Japanese context, is an avenue to explore the potential influences of English-based loanwords in other linguistic contexts. In the second article, The Effect of Task Type on the Writing Accuracy of Iranian Male and Female EFL Learners, Zahra Nouri and Rezvan Rasouli examine three types of writing tasks – personal descriptive, narrative and decision-making – with 50 Iranian intermediate learners and investigates how accuracy among male and female learners is affected by task type. The study finds that learners produce more accurate language in the personal descriptive task. No gender difference is observed in any of the three tasks. In A Contrastive Look at English and Arab Adjectives, Muhammed A. Al-Quran examines attribute and predicate adjectives in English and Arabic from syntactic and semantic points of view, using contrastive analysis. The study finds that ordering adjectives is more complicated in Arabic due to their inflectional properties. The findings will benefit translators and researchers, and can raise awareness of potential issues when modifying annexation structures in Arabic versus English. 4 In When-/Whenever-Conditionals and Conditional Taxonomy, Kevin King discuss the presentation of conditionals in textbooks and websites and argues that conditional taxonomies should be revamped. In the article King argues that when and whenever are equivalent to if (in factual generic and habitual conditionals) and increasing care should be taken with notions of timeless and time-bound. In A Conversational Analysis of Language Practices in the FL Classroom: Data from a Ghanaian University Context, Benedicta Adokarley Lomotey investigates the pedagogical and sociolinguistic factors that influence practices in foreign language (FL) classrooms. Lomotey finds that several factors encourage code-switching in Spanish FL classrooms, including linguistic deficiencies, time constrains and student preferences. The article ends with a call to acknowledge the learners’ first language in the FL classroom and use it to teach the new language. Teresa Wai See Ong’s article, Safeguarding Penang Hokkien in Malaysia: Attitudes and Community-Driven Efforts, takes an ecological approach to investigate the Chinese community in Malaysia’s attitude toward Penang Hokkien, and steps taken to safeguard the language. The article highlights a community-driven effort to maintain Penang Hokkien, in which participants and member of the community recognise the inseparable relationship between language and identity. In An Acoustic Analysis of Intonation in the Taizzi Variety of Yemeni Arabic, Nada Mohammed Salem and Stefanie Pillai study intonation patterns of Taizzi Yemeni Arabic in two age groups (20-25 and 60-65) to discover if changes occurred after the 1962 revolution. Analysing the findings in relation to spontaneous speech, read passages, wh-questions and yes/no questions, the main difference between the groups was in terms of wh-questions. The author puts forward the explanation that this might be due to the increasing contact and interaction that Yemenis have had with foreigners for the past decades which influenced their linguistics practices. In Designing and Piloting a Repeated-Measures ANOVA Study on L2 Academic Writing: Methodology and Challenges, Soh Siak Bie, Tam Shu Sim and Larisa Nikitina address the challenges of implementing repeated-measures ANOVA studies of academic writing in three task conditions. She adopts the principle of progression of tasks from simple to complex, offering insights to researchers who would like to design and implement such studies. In Mid-Front and Back Vowel Mergers in Mymensingh Bangla: An Acoustic Investigation, Md Jahurul Islam and Iftikhar Ahmed study the acoustic properties of vowel categories in Mymensingh Bangla to see if two vowels merge. This novel research is the first study to confirm that the dialect does have vowel mergers. It is hoped this study will lead to further investigation of the dialects of Bangla. In Change in Chinese Personal Pronouns from a Typological Perspective, by Yeonok Hong, Chinese personal pronouns are analysed from a typological perspective and a new corpus examination underwent a typological change from a two-person to a three-person language. It discusses this previously overlooked change in Chinese pronouns in great detail. The author puts 5 forward the argument that Chinese typological studies is an underutilised research method in humanities.     Relative Clauses in Mandarin Chinese Huiying Wen Queen Mary, University of London July 2020 Abstract This thesis is an investigation of the nature and theoretical analyses of the syntax of relative constructions in Mandarin Chinese, with a focus on adjunct relative con- structions and \gapless" relative constructions. In contrast to the traditional views, I propose that deriving these relative constructions requires a head raising strategy and show that this can give a better explanation of their properties and their interaction with comparatives deletion. I argue against the idea that adjunct relative constructions involve null opera- tor movement and defend a novel head raising approach using data from PP-in-situ adjunct relatives. With this in hand, I examine the syntactic analysis of gapless relatives, arguing that gapless relatives are true relatives as opposed to noun com- plements, and show that gapless relatives can be classified into two types: adjunct gapless relatives and resultative gapless relatives, depending on the semantic status of their head nouns. The former involves a manner-kind head noun which is the complement of a PP adjunct. The latter involves a result-kind head noun which is the complement of a null VP. Further, I extend this alternative approach to analyse comparative deletion in relative constructions.     PILIHAN BAHASA DAN LINGUA FRANCA SUKU KAUM DI SARAWAK PILIHAN BAHASA DAN LINGUA FRANCA SUKU KAUM DI SARAWAK Mohammed Azlan Mis [email protected] Pusat Pengajian Bahasa dan Linguistik Fakulti Sains Sosial dan Kemanusiaan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Abstrak Kajian ini membincangkan lingua franca suku kaum Melayu, Iban, Cina dan Melanau di negeri Sarawak. Di Sarawak terdapat bermacam-macam suku kaum dan masing-masing menggunakan bahasanya sendiri. Oleh yang demikian, lingua franca di Sarawak merupakan bahasa yang dipilih untuk berhubung dan bertukar-tukar fikiran antara satu sama lain agar hubungan antara suku kaum menjadi lebih erat dan sejahtera. Tentu sahaja bahasa perhubungan yang dipilih telah menjadi milik bersama, difahami, sesuai dan tidak menimbulkan masalah. Kewajaran kajian ini bertunjangkan lingua franca yang bertitik tolak daripada maklumat pilihan bahasa semasa yang digunakan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Sesuatu bahasa itu akan terus dipilih dan digunakan oleh semua pihak sama ada semasa situasi formal atau tidak formal sekiranya bahasa tersebut memenuhi peranan lingua franca. Hasil analisis pilihan bahasa responden Melayu, Iban, Cina dan Melanau di negeri Sarawak, didapati pilihan bahasa Iban dan dialek Melayu Sarawak lebih tinggi jika dibandingkan dengan pilihan bahasa yang lain. Walau bagaimanapun, pilihan bahasa Iban dilihat digunakan dalam situasi tidak formal dan pilihan bahasa dialek Melayu Sarawak pula semasa situasi formal. Surveys, observations, and interviews were carried out to elicit relevant data. Qualitative data was collected using an observational framework. The findings revealed that three types of code-switching known as tag switching, inter-sentential switching, and intra-sentential switching were predominant in classroom communication between students and between students and the instructor. The study was also able to ratify several systematic and predictive reasons for code-switching in the classroom. The study also found that English was the dominant language of communication while code switching was used to convey ideas in specific situations and to enhance solidarity in the first language.

    On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2021 © 2021 Xiaohan Du All Rights Reserved Abstract On A Snowy Night: Yishan Yining (1247-1317) and the Development of Zen Calligraphy in Medieval Japan Xiaohan Du This dissertation is the first monographic study of the monk-calligrapher Yishan Yining (1247- 1317), who was sent to Japan in 1299 as an imperial envoy by Emperor Chengzong (Temur, 1265-1307. r. 1294-1307), and achieved unprecedented success there. Through careful visual analysis of his extant oeuvre, this study situates Yishan’s calligraphy synchronically in the context of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy at the turn of the 14th century and diachronically in the history of the relationship between calligraphy and Buddhism. This study also examines Yishan’s prolific inscriptional practice, in particular the relationship between text and image, and its connection to the rise of ink monochrome landscape painting genre in 14th century Japan. This study fills a gap in the history of Chinese calligraphy, from which monk- calligraphers and their practices have received little attention. It also contributes to existing Japanese scholarship on bokuseki by relating Zen calligraphy to religious and political currents in Kamakura Japan. Furthermore, this study questions the validity of the “China influences Japan” model in the history of calligraphy and proposes a more fluid and nuanced model of synthesis between the wa and the kan (Japanese and Chinese) in examining cultural practices in East Asian culture.

In particular, how the television and film industries (as an outgrowth of the mass media) related to social dialectology help maintain and promote one regional variety of speech over others is examined. These issues and data addressed in the current study have the potential to make a contribution to the current understanding of social dialectology literature - a sub-branch of sociolinguistics - particularly with respect to LM literature. The researcher adopts a multi-method approach (literature review, interviews and observations) to collect and analyze data. The researcher found support to confirm two positive correlations: the correlative relationship between the number of productions of dialectal television series (and films) and the distribution of the dialect in question, as well as the number of dialectal speakers and the maintenance of the dialect under investigation. Romanization in Hokkien began in the early 1600's with the work of Spanish and later English missionaries with Hokkien-speaking Chinese communities in the Philippines and Malaysia.

    Associate Professor Janet Yong University of Malaya Abstract The language diversity of Penang Hokkien – a hybrid of native Malay and Hokkien dialect loan words. Penang Hokkien is a typical dialect spoken only on the island of Penang by the Chinese who have settled there since the 16th century. Unlike the Malacca Peranakan or Baba Malay, many of the Penang Peranakan did not have mixed Malay heritage, and the Penang Peranakan community has also tended to remain more Chinese than the Baba Malay. The Baba Malay language is a Malay-based creole of mixed low Malay and Hokkien Chinese colloquialisms. Penang Hokkien, on the other hand, is Chinese-based but has absorbed Malay linguistic influences. The Penang Peranakan have developed a language that is a cross between native Malay and Hokkien dialect loan words. When the two languages merged, extensive borrowing from either languages is unavoidable. However, linguistic borrowing in Penang Hokkien is far from being always a necessity. Words and phrases are used creatively, spontaneously and habitually in a hybrid style. This paper discusses the unique phonological, morphological and lexical traits of Penang Hokkien words, phrases and expressions. Nine categories of borrowing from Malay are found: complete borrowing of a whole word, partial copying but retaining its Hokkien Chinese element, complete borrowing with syllable deletion, half a word borrowing, sound change (voice to voiceless and vice versa), either first or last consonant change, vowel change, shortening in the borrowing and switch in word order (Malay to Chinese word order)..

It does so by bringing it face- to-face with the local-knowledge turn in sociolinguistics that emphasises local knowledge, held by language users themselves, to understand sociolinguistic phenomena through local epistemologies. This paper analyses whether and how epistemologies inherent to language, mother tongue and languaging hold relevance in metalinguistic talk in Malaysia. Focus group discussions with ethnic Malay, Chinese and Indian youth revealed that languaging through Bahasa Rojak is already firmly embedded in local epistemology for communicating across ethnolinguistic divides and fostering interethnic inclusiveness. However, an essentialised view of language also remains vital to any holistic sociolinguistic research in Malaysia in culturally-specific ways that do not conflict with languaging. The paper especially supports arguments that we ought not to disregard mother tongues in the interests of critical linguistics. Chinese Loanwords in Vietnamese Pronouns and Terms of Address and Reference Mark J. Alves Montgomery College Chinese loanwords have played a significant role in the Vietnamese system of pronouns and terms of address and reference. Semantic and pragmatic features of Chinese kinship terms and names have been transferred into the overall Vietnamese referential system. However, many of the Chinese loanwords in this semantic domain have undergone grammaticalization quite distinct from those in any variety of Chinese, thereby mitigating the notion of Chinese as being a primary source of the structure of in that system. This paper also considers how kinship terms, titles, and names came to have 1st and 2nd person reference potentially via language contact with Chinese, areal linguistic influence in Southeast Asia, or both. Many related questions will require future studies. 1. Background and Overview Identifying the linguistic influence of Chinese on Vietnamese generally begins with Chinese loanwords, permeate various levels of the Vietnamese lexicon (cf. Lê 2002, Alves 2009). What has become increasingly clear is that a great deal of the lexical and phonological features of Vietnamese must be attributed to a period of substantive Sino- Vietnamese—or more properly Sinitic-Vietic—bilingualism and language contact. Phan (2013) has hypothesized the former existence of ‘Annamese Chinese,’ an earlier but now non-existent variety of Chinese that, he claims, emerged in northern Vietnam from the early to mid-first millennium CE and lasted presumably through the end of the Tang Dynasty, but ultimately merged via language shift with Viet-Muong at some point.

Jacobson Broadening Language Use Options in Formal Discourse: The Malaysian Experience Rodolfo Jacobson The University of Texas at San Antonio Abstract The present paper will report on the ongoing research on “codeswitched speech in formal settings in Malaysia”, a project funded by the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka of Kuala Lumpur, and argue in particular on: 1. the settings where Bahasa alone is the appropriate choice; 2. the settings where codeswitched speech is an acceptable medium of communication; 3. the kind of nativization of English that can be detected in the stretches of English within the code-switched variety. The rationales why monolingual or bilingual discourse is chosen will be examined and the reasons will be explored why a form of English could survive in Malaysia in spite of the official pressure that Bahasa be the only means of communication at the official level. 1. Introduction A project designed to chart codeswitching practices in Malaysia has just been completed under the auspices of that country’s Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and is described in a yet unpublished manuscript entitled The broadening spectrum of a Malaysian experience: From codemixing to codeswitching. Some of the features identified there are worthwhile reporting as they mark Malaysian codeswitching as a unique language mixing technique, quite different from similar language use patterns elsewhere.
