Rare Plants of Louisiana Agalinis filicaulis - purple false-foxglove Figwort Family (Scrophulariaceae) Rarity Rank: S2/G3G4 Range: AL, FL, LA, MS Recognition: Photo by John Hays • Short annual, 10 to 50 cm tall, with stems finely wiry, spindly • Stems simple to few-branched • Leaves opposite, scale-like, about 1mm long, barely perceptible to the unaided eye • Flowers few in number, mostly born singly or in pairs from the highest node of a branchlet • Pedicels filiform, 5 to 10 mm long, subtending bracts minute • Calyx 2 mm long, lobes short-deltoid, with broad shallow sinuses between lobes • Corolla lavender-pink, without lines or spots within, 10 to 13 mm long, exterior glabrous • Capsule globe-like, nearly half exerted from calyx Flowering Time: September to November Light Requirement: Full sun to partial shade Wetland Indicator Status: FAC – similar likelihood of occurring in both wetlands and non-wetlands Habitat: Wet longleaf pine flatwoods savannahs and hillside seepage bogs. Despite the wide range of biological activity and the study of the chemical composition of individual species, the microscopic characteristics of plants of this genus are insufficiently studied. In the article the anatomical structure of two species Elsholtzia Willd. of flora of Ukraine is represented. The sources of literature provide only a morphological description of Elsholtzia stauntonii and Elsholtzia ciliate. We analyzed cross- sections and ultrastructure of leaf blade, petiole, petal and stem, determined their anatomical features, and investigated the ultrastructure of seeds. Fry, Bartram's Garden Presented at the ― James Logan and the Networks of Atlantic Culture and Politics, 1699-1751 conference Philadelphia, PA, 18-20 September 2014 Please do not cite, quote, or circulate without written permission from the author These days, John Bartram (1699-1777) and James Logan (1674-1751) are routinely recognized as significant figures in early American science, and particularly botanic science, even if exactly what they accomplished is not so well known. Logan has been described by Brooke Hindle as “undoubtedly the most distinguished scientist in the area” and “It was in botany that James Logan made his greatest contribution to science.” 1 Raymond Stearns echoed, “Logan’s greatest contribution to science was in botany.”2 John Bartram has been repeatedly crowned as the “greatest natural botanist in the world” by Linnaeus no less, since the early 19th century, although tracing the source for that quote and claim can prove difficult.3 Certainly Logan was a great thinker and scholar, along with his significant political and social career in early Pennsylvania. Was Logan a significant botanist—maybe not? John Bartram too may not have been “the greatest natural botanist in the world,” but he was very definitely a unique genius in his own right, and almost certainly by 1750 Bartram was the best informed scientist in the Anglo-American world on the plants of eastern North America. There was a short period of active scientific collaboration in botany between Bartram and Logan, which lasted at most through the years 1736 to 1738. -

Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales. PHILIP MILLER BIOGRAPHY Chuck Staples, CSSA Historian Miller, Philip (1691–1771)—one of best known authorities in Britain on plants and horticulture during the eighteenth century—famous for his book editions of The Gardener's Dictionary. Born in London, England in 1691, Philip Miller became a British gardener, horticulturist and botanist. Miller was appointed chief gardener and curator at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London in 1722—working at the garden the rest of his life. During this time, he was constantly introducing new plants to the garden—achieved by building up a wide circle of correspondents from around the world that included Sr Joseph Banks (1743–1820) of England, Dr Carolus Linnaeus (1707–1778) of Sweden and John Bartram (1699– 1777) of United States of America—and receiving specimens from Charles du Bois (1656–1740) of England. Noted Scottish gardener and botanist William Aiton (1731–1793) was trained by Miller at the Chelsea Physic Garden. Miller's expertise was made widely known from his book "The Gardener's Dictionary", published in editions from 1731 to1768 during his lifetime. The book covered methods of cultivation and provided a systematic botanical collection of all known wild and cultivated plants in Britain. He gathered together a herbarium of plants from all over the world—now a part of the Natural History Museum herbarium in London. The 7th edition of this book in 1759 partially adopted the binomial system of Linnaeus, while the 8th edition in 1768 fully adopted Linnaeus' binomial system. Miller described the following genera in 1754: Ceiba — from the tropical habitats of Central and South America. -

Botanic Gardens and the Aesthetics of Artifice Cairns Craig In 1651 Andrew Balfour, later one of the founders of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden, visited Blois in France, where the physic garden developed by Robert Morison, then physician to the Duc d’Orléans, had become famous for its col- lection of plants that could be exploited for medicinal purposes. Morison, from Aberdeen, had left Scotland after being wounded fighting on the Royalist side against Cromwell’s forces in the battle of the Bridge of Dee in 1639. Having, like many other royalist exiles, taken up residence in France, he obtained a doctorate in medicine at Angers and went on to study botany in Paris with Vespasian Robin, then prominent in the introduction of North American plants into European horticulture. Balfour’s meeting with Morison was to lead to a lifelong friendship in which each supported the other’s botanical studies. Morison returned to Britain with Charles II in 1660, to become the King’s physician and subsequently Professor of Botany at Oxford; Balfour, having developed a reputation as a doctor first in St Andrews and then in Edinburgh, extended his medical practice by establishing, along with his cousin Robert Sibbald, who had also trained in France, a ‘physic garden’ to emulate those on the Continent, many of which Balfour had visited while on a ‘grand tour’ with the young Earl of Rochester during the years 1661–4. Balfour and Sibbald’s physic garden was transformed into a botanic garden after the unexpected death in 1671 of one of Balfour’s protégés, Patrick Murray (or Morray), Baron of Livingston (or Levengstone), who had been on a tour of the gardens of France. -

Botanik, Gärten und die Zirkulation von Ding- wissen«. The development and management of planted spaces in Northwestern Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries depended on the possibilities for circula- tion in the republic of letters of the Dutch golden age. Circulation was accom- panied by questions of managing space, information and “epistemic things” (Rheinberger) for botanists. Against the conceptual backdrop of “circulation” (Raj), “circulatory regimes” (Saunier) and “ensembles of things” (Hahn), this pa- per analyses, first, flowerbeds as a script for managing information that shaped botanical gardens across Europe in Leiden, Uppsala, Coimbra, and as far as Ba- tavia according to Linnaean principles.
