Keilschriftbibliographie. 25 1 1* Keilschriftbibliographie. 25 1. IV. 1963 - 15. Burn your way to success Studies in the Mesopotamian Ritual and Incantation Series Šurpu by Francis James Michael Simons A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Classics, Ancient History and Archaeology School of History and Cultures College of Arts and Law University of Birmingham March 2017 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary.

I SUMERIAN AND SEMITIC RELIGIOUS AND HISTORICAL TEXTS BY S. LANGDON, M.A. OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS LONDON EDINBURGH GLASGOW COPENHAGEN .NEW YORK TORONTO MELBOURNE CAPE TOWN BOMBAY CALCUTTA MADRAS SHANGHAI HUMPHREY MILFORD 1923 PREFACE. The Series of Oxford Editions of Cuneiform Inscriptions which begins with this volume has been planned primarily for the purpose of publishing the tablets and inscribed monuments presented to the University of Oxford bv Mr. H. WELD- BLUNDELL of Queenfs College. The material contained in the earlier volumes has been obtained by Mr. WELD-BLUNDELL by purchase during his first visit to Mesopotamia in the spring to 1921 and later through the valuable assistance of Captain COOK of the Ministry of Awkaf in 13aodad. The munificent patron of the university then decided to send out an expedition to excavate in Mesopotamia and after a prolonged conference with the writer he decided to excavate Kish, the ancient capital of BabyloniaL, for the University of Oxford. In view of the heavy expense involved in such a project; for the ruins of Kish consist in two great mounds, Tel-el-Ah.aimer and Umm Gharra, which revert to the oldest period of human history, we gladly accepted the generous offer of the Director of the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago), under sanction of his Board of Trustees, to form a joint expedition. The philological material which shall accrue to Oxford and the Field Museum will be published in this Series.

  • Interpretation of Inanna's Descent Myth “From the Great Above Inanna
Interpretation of Inanna’s Descent Myth “From the Great Above Inanna opened her ear to the Great Below.” In Sumerian, the word for ear and wisdom are the same. For example, Enki, the God of Wisdom, is said to have his ear “wide open” -- an unfiltered receptivity! This implies that Inanna's primary reason for “going to hell” was to seek wisdom and understanding. But in order to make such a spiritual journey, she first had to give up her earthly powers and possessions. They don’t allow a lot of luggage on the road to hell. Preparing for the Descent into the Underworld In the myth, she abandoned heaven and earth to descend to the underworld, her office of holy priestess, her temples in the seven principal cities where she was worshipped. She gave up her earthly powers and possessions -- an essential willingness required of any soul undertaking such a journey, of any soul following such a path of initiation. Inanna also recognized the need to protect herself. She gathered together seven of The Me, attributes of civilization which she transformed into such feminine allure as crown, jewelry, and a royal robe. These were intended serve as her protections. They included her crown, earrings of small lapis beads, a double strand of beads about her neck, her breastplate called “Come, man, come”, her golden hip girdle, the lapis measuring rod and line, and her royal breechcloth. Each of these adornments were worn at the level of each Kundalini chakra! Finally, she instructed her faithful servant, Ninshubur, what to do in case she did not return -- to lament her loss, beat the drum for her, and go to the cities -- to the temples where Enlil (her father’s father), Nanna (her father) and Enki (her mother’s father) were, and ask for their help.

Maybe the deepest layer of history lies in the land between Tigris and Eufrat – Mesopotamia (Greek Mesopotam a ‘the land between two rivers’). It is hard to grasp how much our current culture has inherited from the people of that land – be it either the wheel, the art of writing, or the units for measuring time and angles. Science and knowledge of stars has always – though with varying success – been important in European culture. Much from the Babylonian beliefs about con- stellations and planets have reached our days. Planets had an im- portant place in Babylonian astral religion, they were observed as much for calendrical as astrological purposes, and the qualities of the planetary gods were carried on to Greek and Rome. The following started out as an attempt to compose a list of planets together with corresponding gods who lend their names and quali- ties to the planets.

ACTA UNIVERSITATIS UPSALIENSIS Historia Religionum 35 The World of the Sumerian Mother Goddess An Interpretation of Her Myths Therese Rodin Dissertation presented at Uppsala University to be publicly examined in Ihresalen, Tun- bergsvägen 3L, Uppsala, Saturday, 6 September 2014 at 10:00 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The examination will be conducted in English. Faculty examiner: Professor Britt- Mari Näsström (Gothenburg University, Department of Literature, History of Ideas, and Religion, History of Religions). Abstract Rodin, T. 2014. The World of the Sumerian Mother Goddess. An Interpretation of Her Myths. Historia religionum 35. 350 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-554- 8979-3. The present study is an interpretation of the two myths copied in the Old Babylonian period in which the Sumerian mother goddess is one of the main actors. The first myth is commonly called “Enki and NinপXUVDƣa”, and the second “Enki and Ninmaপ”. The theoretical point of departure is that myths have society as their referents, i.e. they are “talking about” society, and that this is done in an ideological way. This study aims at investigating on the one hand which contexts in the Mesopotamian society each section of the myths refers to, and on the other hand which ideological aspects that the myths express in terms of power relations. The myths are contextualized in relation to their historical and social setting. If the myth for example deals with working men, male work in the area during the relevant period is dis- cussed. The same method of contextualization is used regarding marriage, geographical points of reference and so on.

  • Ur III Tablets from the Columbia University Libraries
ARTÍCULO RECENSIÓN Ur III Tablets from the Columbia University Libraries Palmiro Notizia - CCHS–CSIC, Madrid Albasanz, 26-28 – 28031 The volume under review1, co-authored by Steven Garfinkle, Herbert Sauren, and Mark Van De Mieroop, is the sixteenth published in the “Cornell University Studies in Assyriology and Sumerology” series, and so far the second entirely devoted to the publication of administrative texts from the Third Dynasty of Ur. The authors present an edition of 318 tablets in the Columbia University Libraries collection, which come chiefly from Ĝirsu-Lagaš. The book includes a “Preface” with a full history of the tablet collection, a detailed “Catalogue of Texts”, a “Concordance” to sixty-one tablets previously published in copy by Lau in his Old Babylonian Temple Records (=Columbia University Oriental Studies 3; New York 1906, reprinted 1966), and a list of “Collated Tablets”. The bulk of the book is represented, as expected, by the transliterations of the texts which are provided along with the copies prepared by Herbert Sauren in 1975, together with the sixty-one copies by Lau already included in OTR. Next follow the “Indexes” of “Personal Names”, “Divine Names”, “Toponyms, Temples, Households, and Institutions”, “Fields, Storehouse, and Gardens” and a “Glossary of Selected Terms”. The volume concludes with a list of the “Seal Inscriptions” that, conveniently, are also included after the transliteration of each of the texts. As already noted by Englund (CDLN 2010:004) a full text concordance of OTR is missing, since only the sixty-one texts copied by Lau are cross-referenced. Also, references to Arnold’s doctoral dissertation Ancient-Babylonian Temple Records in the Columbia University Library, as well as to Mendelsohn’s Catalogue of the Babylonian Tablets in the Libraries of Columbia University: A list of Cuneiform Documents from the Sumerian, Old-Babylonian, Kassite, and Neo-Babylonian Periods, with Photographic Reproductions of Selected Seals, and Clay Objects (New York: Columbia University Libraries, 1943) are missing.

YALE BABYLONIAN COLLECTION New Haven The publication of thiS volume haS been made possible by a grant from Elizabeth DebevoiSe Healy in honor of her grandfather, Albert T. Clay. FOREWORD The publication of the present work has a long and complicated history. These included dissertations written under the direction of Stephens or of Albrecht Goetze, and monographs and collections of copies prepared by former students and other collaborators. I therefore decided to bring the authorS in question back to New Haven to finish their manuscripts where possible, or to enlist other collaborators for the same purpose where it was not.
