October was absolutely wonderful in so many ways! Our San Francisco Giants led the way! The momentum of fall is with us, as we look forward to an absolutely wonderful November and holiday season. Events in November include some significant Sunday activities: a Library Open House on Sunday, November 2nd. Check out the library’s new look and wonderful collection of artifacts; a superb fashion show on Sunday, November 16th, sponsored by the LAOH, Division 2; the Annual Deceased Members’ Mass on Sunday, November 23rd at 10:00 a.m. It is with great respect that we celebrate the lives of those who gave 2014-2015 OFFICERS so much. BOARD OF DIRECTORS I would like to rectify an omission that occurred in the October Bulletin. When thanking the wonderful Building Committee and the incredible volunteers who helped during the August closure of the Judith Kell Center, I left out the name of one of the primary contributors on the Committee: Gerry Cassidy. Apologies President to Gerry and kudo’s to him and those who were mentioned in the October Bulletin for their stellar contribution to our beloved Center. Caitie O’Shea I am bringing my large family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving with the UICC’s incredible Vice President Thanksgiving dinner. I hope to see many of you with your family, friends and others as our very talented chefs, kitchen folks and servers are gearing up to give you the very best. John Tucker There is a surprise offering in the mix, Rosie Keehan, our Rose of Tralee, is organizing a “Last Secretary Rose of Summer” competition for those of us who “barely” miss the age cut-off for the Rose of Tralee competition. This event will serve as a kick-off for the January Rose of Tralee event. Yours truly will be in the Michael Bowler competition and more information regarding date and time will be forthcoming. Others who will admit to Treasurer being “around” my age are welcome to inquire in regard to joining the competition. More information will be forthcoming. Megan Cummins As mentioned in the email blast, there will be no General Membership Meeting in November as Michael Leboeuf Thanksgiving falls on our usual meeting date. Although we usually do not have a membership meeting in Bill Luqué December, we will have a “Membership Appreciation Meeting” in December this year. Your Board has set the date for this “first” on December 11th. Stay tuned by referring to the December Bulletin message. Additionally we are going to have a traditional Irish holiday variety show, “An Irish Christmas”, on Wednesday, December 10th. Please calendar the date. Your Board of Directors and I am thankful for the wonderful opportunity of serving as your Board this year. I would like to close with best wishes to the family of John (our former BOD President) and Arleen Gallagher on the marriage of their son, Tim, in Milwaukee (brrrrrrr) on November 22nd. The word is they have found an Irish piper and dancers for the celebration in Wisconsin!! DOWLING LIBRARY NEWS TREASURES OF THE PATRICK J. DOWLING LIBRARY “ you never know what you are going to find when you go through the collection of books at the library” —Pat D’Arcy A few months ago long time volunteer, Pat D’Arcy, was sorting through some books at the library when she came upon an anthology of stories about the Bantry Bay area, It Might Have Been But Yesterday. I am not even sure why she was looking through those books since she usually catalogs Irish language books, but fortunately she did since it contains stories about her uncle, Michael Walsh, and her first cousins, Frank, Vinnie, and Noel who are still alive and residing in Bantry. The anthology chronicles the story of how her uncle was involved in the transportation of petrol that had come aground in Bantry Bay when a military ship had been torpedoed during WWI and how the petrol was used by Sinn Fein to drive voters to polling places and another story about her cousins involvement with a handball court/ social club. Pat related the stories to her Bantry cousins on Facebook, who told her to keep sending more stories. Kind of fun how the stories came to San Francisco from Bantry in the form of this little anthology and back to Bantry via Facebook. • Hunting for the Genetic Legacy of Brian Boru in Irish Historical Sources
Hunting for the genetic legacy of Brian Boru in Irish historical sources. Catherine Swift, Mary Immaculate College Having won an English chariot from an Italian gentleman at play, my uncle had our arms painted on the panels in a more splendid way than ever (surmounted, as we were descended from the ancient kings) with an Irish crown of the most splendid size and gilding. I had this crown in lieu of a coronet engraved on a large amethyst signet-ring worn on my forefinger; and I don’t mind confessing that I used to say the jewel had been in my family for several thousand years, having originally belonged to my direct ancestor, his late Majesty, King Brian Boru or Barry. I warrant the legends of the Heralds’ College are not more authentic than mine was.1 In his travels in Ireland in 1842, Thackeray followed the course of the Shannon up river from Tarbert to Limerick and then travelled through Clare to Galway, visiting “a decent little library” in Ennis where he bought “six volumes of works strictly Irish”. As he describes them subsequently, “these yellow-covered books are prepared for the people chiefly” and included tales of a highwayman entitled Adventures of Mr James Freeny, legends in Hibernian Tales2 and “the lamentable tragedy of the ‘Battle of Aughrim’ writ in the most doleful Anglo-Irish verse.” He does not refer explicitly in his Irish Sketchbook to Brian Boru but it seems fair to assume that his description of Barry Lyndon’s ancestry was based, at least in part, on stories he had heard when travelling through Thomond or, perhaps, even elsewhere in Ireland.

1 To: His Excellency Hojjatoleslam Sayed Mohammad Khatami, President of Iran BOBBY SANDS STREET, Tehran, Iran. THE name Bobby Sands is known throughout the world, symbolising the heroism of an Irish prisoner and his comrades who died on hunger strike in their unequal fight against their British jailors. Over the course of the past two years British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has been lobbying Iran’s Foreign Minister to change the name of Bobby Sands Street, where the British Embassy is situated, in the capital Tehran. (It was formerly known as Winston Churchill Street.) Bobby Sands was an Irish patriot and martyr, who died on 5 May 1981, after 66 days on hunger strike. Whilst in prison he was elected as a Member of Parliament [MP]. One hundred thousand people attended his funeral, including the Iranian ambassador to Sweden. The British government has no right to be in Ireland, just as it has no right to be interfering in the affairs of any other nation. We appeal to the Iranian government and its people not to bow to requests from the British government to rename Bobby Sands Street. Sincerely, Danny Morrison Michele Neylon [email protected] Kathleen Collins [email protected]. Both have had a very limited availability and this publication is an effort to rectify that situation. Both involved quite a lot of work in terms of collecting very valuable information that might otherwise have been lost and therefore they deserve to be made available. Canon Costello took a particular interest in the history of the Parish while he was Parish Priest here and collected a lot of information over a number of years. The late Padraig O'Maidin was in charge of the County Library for many years and contributed an enormous amount to local history through his research and writings in many journals and newspapers.

Chapter 4 THE SOUTH AND CENTRE The South Coast: Wexford, Waterford, south-east Cork The Blackwater valley: north-east Cork Glen of Aherlow, east Tipperary, Limerick The Shannon: Clare, Offaly Around Kilkenny: Carlow, Tipperary The South Coast: WEXFORD - WATERFORD - south-east CORK Wexford Beginning at the nearest landing-place from Wales for this part of Ireland, Wexford was the birthplace of Thomas Moore's mother -- which may seem a distant literary connection, but the poet Thomas (Tom) Moore (1779-1852) [1] was perhaps the most famous literary lion of his time: Wexford still regrets that his mother removed to Dublin in order to give birth to him. In 1835 Moore went to see his mother's house in Wexford and a crowd immediately gathered: While I was looking at this locality, a few persons had begun to collect around me and some old women (entering into my feelings) ran before me as to the wretched house I was in search of (which is now a small pot-house), crying out, "Here, Sir, is the very house where your grandmother lived. Lord be merciful to her!" Of the grandmother I have no knowledge... ... but, Moore adds in his Diary, he remembers that his mother, 'one of the noblest-minded as well as the most warm-hearted of all God's creatures, was born under this lowly roof.' The house is still a 'pot-house' -- a pleasant raftered pub now called the 'Thomas Moore'; the words about his mother are recorded on a plaque in its wall [2] . Oscar Wilde 's mother, (' Speranza ') also came from Wexford.
