The anniversary, which the Serbian Orthodox Church has announced for the year 2019, is the Eight Hundred Years of Autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church (1219-2019), which is inseparably linked with the firstArchbishop, Enlightener and Teacher of the Serbian people, Saint Sava. In connection with this, with the blessing of His Holiness Serbian Patriarch Irinej and under the auspices of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Orthodox Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade was host to an academic gath- ering held in December of last year entitled, “Eight Centuries of the Autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church (1219-2019): the Historical, Theological and Cultural Heritage. The significance of this gathering is reflected in its aim and hope of attaining a deeper glimpse and understanding of the century-old tradition of Orthodox patristic teaching, spiritual experience, enlighten- ment, and the laying of the foundations of church life achieved by St. Sava. In his and our Fatherland and beyond, his spiritual vision was unlimited, since he thought not with his mind but by the enlightenment of the light of Christ, that is, he depicted Christ whose goal is to enlighten and bring others, as well as oneself, into the community of God’s love and freedom. More specifically, various celebrations will be held throughout the United States of America to be announced in a timely fashion, while The Path of Orthodoxy will bring you articles on the theme of this year’s jubilee by various authors. A Church-La- With the Blessings ity Sabor and the celebration of 800 years of autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church will be held in Chicago, Illinois, on of the Episcopal Council July 13-14, while in the Western American Diocese the celebration will be held during Labor Day weekend (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) at St. Sava Church in San Gabriel, California. The Path of Orthodoxy In this issue we offer our readers an interview with professor Dr. Milos Kovic. Based on his historical research he offers us The Official Publication answers, taking into consideration the historical perspective from the time St. Sava and his father St. Simeon lived and labored. of the Serbian Orthodox Church It is a special joy to mention that the Episcopal Council of the SOC in North and South America blessed the publishing of in North and South America the monograph, The Serbian Christian Heritage of America (The Historical, Spiritual, and Cultural Presence of the Serbian Diaspora in North America 1815-2019), which recently arrived from the press and is available for purchase through the Sebastian Editorial Staff Press website (www.sebastianpress.org). The editor-in-chief of this monumental work is His Grace Bishop Maxim to whom we V. Rev. Milovan Katanic owe much gratitude for his selfless dedication and work in completing this publication. Box 371, Grayslake, IL 60030 In his sermon delivered in Monastery Zicha in the year 1220, Saint Sava advises us: “Brothers and friends and fathers and Phone: 847-223-4300 children called by God, lend your God-loving hearts to hearing the divine dogmas. And upon hearing these holy words, place [email protected] them, brothers, in your hearts and the conscience of your souls, and before the eyes of your mind and understand them. God, all merciful and lover of mankind, having immeasurable mercy for man, bowed the Heavens and descended to earth. With His Technical Editor Divine Dispensation and voluntary bearing of many different sufferings to His Divine Body, he enlightened the human race; and Vesna R. Meinert He sent to the whole world the Holy Apostles saying: “Go and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit”. But since they themselves did not come to us, our fathers, hearing in truth their words, believed them. And the gracious God, Who has endless mercy and does not wish that any one of us perish, by that same first commandment and same manner, according to the teaching and preaching of the Holy Apostles, elevates me to that Sainthood (Archbishopric). And He wants through me, to “fulfill that which is lacking” of our fathers; and through the Holy Spirit, He commands me to proclaim this word regarding your salvation, which you, hearing it with love, keep it that we might be in communion with the ranks of the Saints. Therefore, brothers and children, placing all of your hope in God, I first pray that we, above all, hold to His True Faith. For as the Apostle says, “no other foundation can a man lay than what has been laid” by the Holy Spirit through the Holy Apos- tles and God bearing Fathers and that is – the True Faith – confirmed and preached at the holy Seven Ecumenical councils….” PROTOPRESBYTER BRATISLAV KRSIC THE PATH OF ORTHODOXY WINTER 2019 • 3 Alhambra Parish Hosts Fifth Annual Sts. FORUM 18 NEWS SERVICE, Oslo, Norway http://www.forum18.org/ The right to believe, to worship and witness The right to change one's belief or religion The right to join together and express one's belief This article was published by F18News on: 18 March 2004 KOSOVO & SERBIA: Churches & mosques destroyed amid inter-ethnic violence By Felix Corley, Forum 18 News Service <http://www.forum18.org>, and <br> Branko Bjelajac, Forum 18 News Service <http://www.forum18.org> Large scale violence in Kosovo and Serbia before the 5th anniversary of Nato's bombing raids has seen many Serbian Orthodox churches and mosques attacked, amid disputed suggestions, including by an un-named UNMIK official, that the violence in Kosovo was planned as a "pogrom against Serbs: churches are on fire and people are being attacked for no other reason than their ethnic background", Forum 18 News Service has learnt. In the Serbian capital Belgrade and in the southern city of Nis, mobs set two mosques on fire despite the pleas of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In Belgrade, Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral personally pleaded with the mob and urged police and firefighters to react and preserve "what could be preserved". After initial hesitation for fear of the mob, firefighters and police did intervene, so the Belgrade mosque, which is "under state protection", was saved from complete destruction. In Kosovo since 1999, many attacks have been made on Orthodox shrines, without UNMIK, KFOR, or the mainly ethnically Albanian Kosovo Protection Service making any arrests of attackers. Some of the Serbian Orthodox Church's most revered shrines have been burnt amid the upsurge of inter-ethnic violence that erupted in Kosovo on 17 March, leaving at least 22 people dead and several hundred wounded.

Branislav Golic, Parish Priest e-mail: [email protected] Parish Office: 724-375-4074 webpage: stelijahaliquippa.com Center Office: 724-375-9894 JANUARY 26, 2020 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Saint Sava Born Prince Rastko Nemanjic, son of the Serbian ruler and founder of the Serbian medieval state Stefan Nemanja, St. Sava became the first Patriarch of Serbia (1219-1233) and is an important Saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church. As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs.

3 AWAKENED ARCHIVES - New music edition Radio Belgrade, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year (2009), and the Institute of Musicology, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008, have started a new collaborative project ‘Awakened Archives’. Alphonsus Ihuoma ________________________________ Professor Raj Bhala (Chairperson) Date approved: May 15, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Man, as a person, is superior to the state, and consequently the good of the person transcends the good of the state. The philosopher Jacques Maritain developed his political philosophy thoroughly informed by his deep Catholic faith. His philosophy places the human person at the center of every action. In developing his political thought, he enumerates two principal tasks of the state as (1) to establish and preserve order, and as such, guarantee justice, and (2) to promote the common good. The state has such duties to the people because it receives its authority from the people. The people possess natural, God-given right of self-government, the exercise of which they voluntarily invest in the state.

The National Library of Serbia (NLS) has occupied the Hilan- dar Monastery since 1971 and serves as one of the first cultural institutions of the Republic of Serbia to collect, process, protect, and present the mon- astery’s treasures including 507 medieval charters, 56 medieval manuscripts on parchment, 1048 manuscripts on paper (815 in Cyrillic), 83 incunabula, and numerous other archival materials. The general state of these collections, however, is poor and is plagued by bad storage techniques. This article dis- cusses the conservation efforts launched between 1990 and 2004 by the NLS as well as a recent initiative to highlight the preservation that has been ac- complished and also the work left to do to ensure these vital artefacts of Ser- bian cultural history are preserved.
