In the Serbian capital Belgrade and in the southern city of Nis, mobs set two mosques on fire despite the pleas of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In Belgrade, Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral personally pleaded with the mob and urged police and firefighters to react and preserve "what could be preserved". After initial hesitation for fear of the mob, firefighters and police did intervene, so the Belgrade mosque, which is "under state protection", was saved from complete destruction. In Kosovo since 1999, many attacks have been made on Orthodox shrines, without UNMIK, KFOR, or the mainly ethnically Albanian Kosovo Protection Service making any arrests of attackers. Some of the Serbian Orthodox Church's most revered shrines have been burnt amid the upsurge of inter-ethnic violence that erupted in Kosovo on 17 March, leaving at least 22 people dead and several hundred wounded. -

As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. -

The very presence of this medical instrument in Serbian medieval art indicates its usage in Serbian medical practices of the time. Phlebotomy is one of the oldest forms of therapy, widely spread in medieval times. It is also mentioned in Serbian medical texts, such as Chilandar Medical Codex No. 517 and Hodoch code, i.e. translations from Latin texts originating from Salerno–Montpellier school. Lancet or phlebotome is identified based on archaeological finds from the Roman period, while finds from the Middle Ages and especially from Byzantium have been scarce. Analyses of preserved frescoes and icons has shown that, in comparison to other medical instruments, lancet is indeed predominant in Serbian medieval art, and that it makes for over 80% of all the representations, while other instruments have been depicted to a far lesser degree. Examination of written records and art points to the conclusion that Serbian medieval medicine, both in theory and in practice, belonged entirely to European -

SERBIA PREFACE A visit to Serbia places one in the center of the Balkans, the 20th century's tinderbox of Europe, where two wars were fought as prelude to World War I and where the last decade of the century witnessed Europe's bloodiest conflict since World War II. Serbia chose democracy in the waning days before the 21st century formally dawned and is steadily transforming an open, democratic, free-market society. Serbia offers a countryside that is beautiful and diverse. The country's infrastructure, though over-burdened, is European. The general reaction of the local population is genuinely one of welcome. The local population is warm and focused on the future; assuming their rightful place in Europe. AREA, GEOGRAPHY, AND CLIMATE Serbia is located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula and occupies 77,474square kilometers, an area slightly smaller than South Carolina. It borders Montenegro, Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to the west, Hungary to the north, Romania and Bulgaria to the east, and Albania, Macedonia, and Kosovo to the south. Serbia's many waterway, road, rail, and telecommunications networks link Europe with Asia at a strategic intersection in southeastern Europe. Endowed with natural beauty, Serbia is rich in varied topography and climate. Three navigable rivers pass through Serbia: the Danube, Sava, and Tisa. The longest is the Danube, which flows for 588 of its 2,857-kilometer course through Serbia and meanders around the capital, Belgrade, on its way to Romania and the Black Sea. The fertile flatlands of the Panonian Plain distinguish Serbia's northern countryside, while the east flaunts dramatic limestone ranges and basins. -

Hundreds of people of all ages — families with children, teenagers, elderly — queue in front of the entrance to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade (MoCAB). e event is reported in most of the Serbian press, radio and TV. Quite unusual and an astute communication stunt, the opening lasts for seven days, during which period the museum will be opened for 24 hours, with free access. After being closed for ten years, pending an important and complete restoration, the building is reopened on exactly the same date as its original inauguration, October 20th, 1965, in order to meet the long-lasting expectation of the public (both professional and general) for this architectural landmark to come back to life. One of the most important modern public edices in the New Belgrade, and housing a major collection of Yugoslav modern art, the museum was also among the rst institutions of its kind in Europe. e MoCAB was founded in 1958, an event followed by an architectural competition in 1960, won by Ivan Antić (1923-2005) and Ivana Raspopović (1930-2015), both young and promising architects trained in the Modernist tradition. is was their rst commission together (to be followed by the strange and powerful brick memorial dedicated to the victims of October 1941, opened in 1976 in Sumarice — tragic, uncanny visual reminder of pittura metasica), a remarkable example of experiment with modernist architecture at the margins of canonical Western Europe. -

DEJAN ATANAKOVIC SACI instructor since 2000 Digital Multimedia Body Archives: Special Topics in Studio Art Art, Mind & Diversity Dejan Atanackovic has been presenting personal exhibitions and curatorial projects since 1994, in Italy, Serbia, USA, Canada, Bosnia, Albania, Slovenia, while a number of his pieces have appeared as part of collective shows in Germany, Switzerland, Mexico, and elsewhere. He exhibited his works in cycles entitled Perfect Future (1999-2001), Golem (2003-2011), Orphic Fragments (2005-2006), German Lessons (2009-2014). Recent works include The Archive (2014) and Lusitania (2015). Some of his curatorial projects include Outside Project (2001), Infinity Enclosed (2004), Termination Shock (2007), Noncorpi (2011), Missing Places (2012). He teaches Digital Multimedia; Art, Mind & Diversity; and Body Archives at SACI in Florence, and Installation Art at the Siena Art Institute and at the photography institute Studio Marangoni in Florence. As a founder of the Center for International Studies of Arts in Belgrade, since 2005 he has been organizing the Outside Project, an exchange program in art education between Belgrade and Florence, dedicated to the study of cities. Between 2009 and 2011, in collaboration with Belgrade’s Museum of Contemporary Art, he curated the Belgrade: Another Gaze, a project dedicated to interpretation of cities through the perspective of marginalized groups. The project included workshops, public tours, TV production and exhibitions. Coordinator of the East Exit, a project for scholarships offered to the students of art in Eastern Europe, by the Siena Art Institute, since 2012. In May 2017, he published a novel in Serbian entitled Luzitanija (Lusitania). He lives in Belgrade and Florence. -

[email protected] Abstract: The non-elimination of the consequences of occupation in some parts of Yugoslavia in World War II, as well as preventing and obstructing from the Yugoslav state the elimination of the con- sequences of the war suffering of the Serbian Orthodox Church, will prevent and disable the Church in certain parts of its canonical territory and endanger, destroy and confiscate its property. This will then lead to a new suffering of the Serbian people, while putting the legal successor state of Yugoslavia to additional temptations. Non-return of property to the Serbian Church will be especially in favor of secessionist forces that threaten the territorial integrity of Serbia. Keywords: Serbian Orthodox Church, Yugoslavia, Serbia, occupation, property, usurpation INTRODUCTION The revolutionary communist authorities in Yugoslavia, in an effort to establish a social order by their ideological standards, relied on some of the consequences of the occupation in World War II. Especially in policymaking on the national issue and in relation to the Church. After taking power in the country - by conducting a revolution while waging a war for liberation from occupation - Yugoslavia’s new governing nomenclature, legitimized as such during the Second World War, was not content with establishing a state order, only on the basis of a single, exclusive ideology, but it penetrated the civilizational frameworks of state jurisdiction and went about creating the whole social order. -
The Serbian Orthodox Church and the New Serbian Identity
Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE NEW SERBIAN IDENTITY Belgrade, 2006 This Study is a part of a larger Project "Religion and Society," realized with the assistance of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Historical Confusion At the turn of the penultimate decade of the 20th century to the last, the world was shocked by the (out-of-court) pronouncement of the death verdict for an artist, that is, an author by the leader of a theocratic regime, on the grounds that his book insulted one religion or, to be more exact, Islam and all Muslims. Naturally, it is the question of the famous Rushdie affair. According to the leader of the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, the novel “Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie was blasphemous and the author deserved to be sentenced to death by a fatwa. This case - which has not been closed to this day - demonstrated in a radical way the seriousness and complexity of the challenge which is posed by the living political force of religious fundamentalism(s) to the global aspirations of the concept of liberal capitalist democracy, whose basic postulates are a secular state and secular society. The fall of the Berlin Wall that same year (1989) marked symbolically the end of an era in the international relations and the collapse of an ideological- political project. In other words, the circumstances that had a decisive influence on the formation of the Yugoslav and Serbian society in the post- World War II period were pushed into history. Time has told that the mentioned changes caused a tragic historical confusion in Yugoslavia and in Serbia, primarily due to the unreadiness of the Yugoslav and, in particular, Serbian elites to understand and adequately respond to the challenges of the new era. -
