James has per- formed at countless concerts, and festivals, he has taught at a variety of folk music camps, including Pinewoods. This is a good issue to keep as a reference for all of the fun happenings this summer, including festivals and Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp in Massachusetts. The Sea Music Concerts will continue weekly throughout the summer. There are open sings, string band get-togethers, and even a Swim and Sing party. What a great way to spend the summer. Our next newsletter issue will be in September. Don’t forget to sign up for the Fall Weekend. It’s not too early for reserving your space or for applying for the working scholarships as well as the Parker, Mayer and Appel Scholarships. Thank you to the volunteers who help to put out the newsletter each month and ensure that you get the word about what’s going on in the club and in events throughout the city. They could always use more help. For the June Newsletter thank you to: Kathy Cohen, Isabel Goldstein, Rosanne Levitt, Anne Price, Donald Stumpf, Marcus Tieman, Morey Weisman, and Don Wade who delivered the pages from the printer. Won’t you join us on Thursday September 5 and help mail out the next newsletter? (See page 3 for details.)
30 Years Ago This Month compiled by Harvey Binder Here are some club happenings as reported in the July-August, 1972 newsletter: •Lew Hollander’s new album, “Troublin’ Times,” was the subject of a front-page ar- ticle in his hometown paper. •Nick Hodsdon held a folk mass service in which the Padstow May song was staged featuring Don Wade as the horse and Maddy DeLeon as the teaser (ritual characters). •The Bluegrass Club of New York was formed. Kathy Kaplan was their newsletter editor. •The National Park Service, presenting “July 4th in old New York,” offered folk singing by Richie and Michele Heller, Lorre Wyatt, Jerry Epstein, and Estelle Wade. •The National Park Service also sponsored concerts at Federal Hall. Club members who performed were Alan Friend, Lew Hollander, Maddy DeLeon, Bud Weiss, David Jones, Jerry Epstein, and Lorre Wyatt. •Singing parties were held at the homes of Debby McClatchy and Evelyn and Milton Heimlich. •Despite the arrival of Hurricane Agnes, Evelyne Beers and Roberts and Barrand made it down to the seaport for their concert. •The club shared sponsorship with the Folklore Center in presenting Mark Spoelstra in concert. Folk music around town included: Sam Chatmon (Folklore Center), Aly Bain (FC), Lou Killen (seaport), Ruth Brown (seaport), Joe Heaney (seaport), Oscar Brand and Jean Ritchie (seaport), J. F. Murphy and Salt (seaport), Oscar Brand (Tibbetts Brook Park), Arlo Guthrie/Harry Chapin (Central Park), Tom Rush/David Blue/Pamela Pol- lard (CP), James Lang/Ruth Copeland/David Bromberg (CP), Richie Havens/Goose Creek Symphony (CP), Balfa Freres (Washington Square Methodist Church) Strange Creek Singers (NYU). The Club’s web page: http://www.folkmusicny.org Folk Fone: (212)563-4099 - 7 - THE BEST OF BOB BLUE Black Socks press; BSP 21 FINALLY, the monumental and totally wonderful collection of Bob Blue’s greatest songs. Don’t even think of not owning this spectacular double CD — 2 discs, 35 songs, almost two hours worth. In addition to Bob, singers (in alphabetical order) also include Joanne Hammil, Phil Hoose, Charlie King, Sally Rogers, Jane Sapp, Pete Seeger, Kim Wallach, and many, many more of his friends. The range is enormous, witty and thought-pro- voking songs for both adults and kids: classics like “The Ballad of Erica Levine”; the irre- pressible Jackson Gillman doing Bob’s exhila- rating Mozart tour de force (his words to Eine Kleine Nachtsmuzik); the actually thrilling “Eensy Weensy Spider”, allegorically linked to the raising of the Mary Ellen Carter; the very clever “Their Way” (a variation of Paul Anka’s “My Way”); The touching, “When the End Came”; the charming “Pigs”, juxtaposed against the lovely music of Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata; jazzy numbers like the “Pineapple Rag” (music by Scott Joplin); some very moving songs sung by young people — “Dear Mr. President” and the unforgettable “Courage”. And on and on. Remarkable songs by a remarkable man; yes, a must-have album. The double CD set is just $25 plus $2 shipping. Lyrics are included, plus Bob’s com- ments. The proceeds do help Bob in his valiant struggle with MS, so any additional amount would always be appreciated. Contact: Bob Blue, 170 E. Hadley Rd, Amherst, MA 01002; 413-256-8784 (after 1pm);
Scholarship Funds - Continued from page 6 Suzanne Szasz Shorr Scholarship - a new fund which, when operational, will provide a scholarship to CDSS Folk Music Week at Pinewoods Camp. You may make a fully tax-deductible contribution in any amount to any of the funds above by sending a check payable to “Folk Music Society of New York” (noted with the name of the scholarship memorial) to our office, 450 Seventh Ave. #972, New York, NY 10123-0101. To establish a new named fund in honor of or in memoriam to a loved one, please contact any of our current board members (see list in this newsletter). The Lil Appel Scholarship is an independent fund which provides scholarship support for the spring and fall weekends to an individual who has a strong interest in folk music, singing, and/or instrumental playing. This fund is newly established by a loving group of regulars in memoriam to Lil’s 35+ years of bi-weekly Friday night sings, “a breeding and feeding ground for many of today’s accomplished singers and musicians.” Con- tributors of $25 or more will receive a copy of the 64 page “I Remember Lil” book of loving remembrances. For information, or to contribute, contact Alice Backer at (914) 993-0618 or Drew Smith at (201) 444-2833. - 8 - New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club and Polytechnic University Student Activities present
