SEPTEMBER Thursday, September 19 Paris Hill Barn and Café – 7 PM The Small Town Big Band Admission is Free Friday, September 20 The Folkus Project – 8 PM Abbie Gardner Abbie is a fiery dobro player perhaps better known as a member of the popular group Red Molly. Tickets: $15 Hamilton College – Wellin Hall – 7:30 PM Ustad Shafaat Khan World-renowned Indian classical musician Ustad Shafaat Khan presents a concert of classical and folk and folk music from India dating back to the 13th century. The first half of the concert will be a presentation of tabla solo with accompaniment. The second half of the concert is performed on sitar and vocals with accompaniment on tabla. Lyrics include the of poetry Rumi and Hazrat Ameer Khusru. Tickets: $20 adult/$15 senior citizen/$5 student Nelson Odeon – 8 PM Stephane Wrembel Quite simply, Stephane Wrembel represents the living face of Django-inspired Gypsy jazz. He has been called “one of the best guitar players in the world”. Tickets: $25 Advance Jazz at The Other Side – 8 PM Ronnie Leigh The epitome of cool, jazz vocalist Ronnie Leigh has delighted discriminating audiences around the world with his soulful voice. Ronnie will be accompanied by Rick Montalbano, Mike Dubaniewicz, Jimmy Johns, and Ian Stewart. Tickets: $15 Saturday, September 21 Nelson Odeon – 8 PM Christina Ohlman and Rebel Montez The queen of blue-eyed soul, Ohlman has played with Muddy Waters, Keith Richards, and is the current long-time vocalist with the Saturday Night Live band. Tickets: $25 Advance Park Coffeehouse – 7:30 PM A Double Bill: The Mighty Craic (Bill Fahy, Amanda Straney, and Jessica Hilterbrandt) playing traditional irish music, with a touch of Americana, rock, and bluegrass, and Cathie Timian and the Hired Hands (featuring Brian Mulkerne and John Handzel) Tickets: $12 Sunday, September 22 6 On The Square – 7:00 PM Garnet Rogers Garnet Rogers has been called “one of the major talents of our time. With his incredible range and thoughtful dramatic phrasing, he is considered by fans and critics to be one of the finest singers anywhere. Tickets: $40 Thursday, September 26 Paris Hill Barn and Café – 7 PM Stage Road Admission is Free Friday, September 27 Earlville Opera House – 7 PM The Canal Street String Band With three-part harmonies, fifty-five strings, and a pair of cow bones, The Canal Street String Band puts a brand-new shine on some seriously fun old American music, including fiddle tunes, sea shanties, cowboy songs, canal ditties, mountain music, western swing, and originals too. $15 General Admission $18 Member Admission $10 Student Admission Nelson Odeon – 8 PM The Durham County Poets A lively and soulful group who write and perform an eclectic blend of blues, folk, and rock with tinges of country, gospel, and swing tossed in. Tickets: $22 Advance Saturday, September 28 6 On The Square – 7:30 PM Kerri Powers Kerri’s dark and beautiful soul-shattering voice is not the kind that can be taught. It has to be in your spirit, in your blood. Tickets: $20 Sunday, September 29 Nelson Odeon – 7 PM Woody Pines It’s tempting to call Woody Pines’ music “rockabilly, but it might be more accurate to call it “hillbilly boogie”. Tickets: $22 Advance OCTOBER Friday, October 4 The Folkus Project – 8 PM Darrell Scott Darrell is known as a songwriter for Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, and the Dixie Chicks. He’s also been a sideman for Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and Tim O’ Brien, and a frequent guest on the Mountain Stage radio broadcast. Tickets: $25 Saturday, October 5 6 On The Square – 7:30 PM House of Hamill Rose Baldino and Brian Buchanan met when Brian's band Enter the Haggis and Rose's group Burning Bridget Cleary shared a stage at the Folk Alliance conference and they soon became musical collaborators. Together, they write unusual new fiddle tunes and exciting, unpredictable original songs while breathing new life into traditional and contemporary songs. Both are unique lead vocalists, and the blend of their two voices is hypnotic and irresistible. Pre-show tickets are available at $18 (plus a $2 service charge) or $22 at the door Earlville Opera House – 5 PM Williams Road Band and Co. Tickets: $20 Hamilton College – Wellin Hall – 7:30 PM Tempesta di Mare, Baroque chamber players The chamber ensemble of Philadelphia’s Baroque orchestra Tempesta di Mare performs A Tale of Two Italian Cities, chamber music from Venice and Naples. The group comprises recorder/ flute, violin, viola da gamba, lute, and harpsichord. The program includes Vivadi’s Lute Concerto and La Notte, Scarlatti’s Concerto in A Minor, and other works of early music. Tickets. $20/$15/$5 Park Coffeehouse – 7:30 PM Quick Step with John Kirk and Trish Miller, accompanied by Joel Rosenberger – An evening of fiery fiddle tunes, fancy footwork, and versatile instrumental skills Tickets: $12 Thursday, October 10 Paris Hill Barn and Café – 7 PM Midnight Mike and the Bent Blinds Admission is Free Friday, October 11 6 On The Square – 7:30 PM Joe Jencks Joe Jencks is a 20-year veteran of the international folk circuit, an award-winning songwriter, and celebrated vocalist. Joe delivers engaged musical narratives filled with heart, soul, groove and grit. He is a co-founder of the harmony trio, Brother Sun. Blending well-crafted instrumentals and vivid songwriting, Jencks serves it all up with a lyric baritone voice that has the edgy richness of a good sea-salt caramel. Tickets are available at the advance price of $15 (plus $2 service charge) or $18 at the door Remsen Arts Center -- 7:30 PM Monk Rowe and the Roots of Rock n’ Roll $10 General Admission $8 Member General Admission $5 Student General Admission Saturday, October 12 Nelson Odeon – 8 PM Leo Crandall This event celebrates the CD and Vinyl release of Leo's new album, Unknowable and Stunning Things. Leo will be joined by both his collaborator Hymie Witthoft and a number of special guests who appear on the record as well as members of his band, the Gonstermachers. Leo is a songwriter, musician, poet, filmmaker, and artist. He performs on requinto, cello, baritone guitar, mandocello, dutar, ukulele, and guitar. He has been nominated for the international Bluestar Award and charted #14 nationally in the Roots and Blues category. Tickets: $20 in advance Thursday, October 17 Paris Hill Barn and Café – 7 PM TBA Admission is Free Friday, October 18 The Folkus Project – 8 PM Upstate Upstate’s music has been called “thrilling and dazzling”, drawing from their adventurous blend of folk, R & B, jazz, gospel, and rock n’ roll. Admission: $20 Nelson Odeon – 8 PM Benjamin Dakota Rogers Hailing from the countryside of rural Ontario, Benjamin funnels his penchant for starry nights and nostalgia into his stylized folk sound, reaching far beyond to include influences of roots, blues, and country music. Tickets: $20 in advance Saturday, October 19 6 On The Square – 7:30 PM Crys Matthews Crys Matthews blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics. Having been compared to everyone from Toshi Reagon to Tracy Chapman to Ruthie Foster, and equally thoughtful, realistic and emotional, her songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul. Tickets for this performance are available at the pre-show price of $15 (plus $2 service charge), or $18 at the door Earlville Opera House – 7 PM Hazmat Modine Hazmat Modine has toured the world for over fifteen years. The band distills American music into an essence from its myriad forms: Blues, Country, R & B, Rock-n-Roll, Jazz, Gospel, World Music, Soul, Roots... Yet it adds to this mixture something raw and mysterious that feels at once familiar and new. Tickets: $33 - $43 Nelson Odeon – 8 PM Yarn Yarn spent two years honing their chops at the famed Kenny’s Castaway in Greenwich Village. The band then took to the road, and shared stages with Dwight Yoakam, Charlie Daniels, Allison Krauss, Leon Russell, and The Lumineers. They have landed on the Grammy ballot 4 times, garnered nods from the Americana Music Association, and placed top five on the AMA album charts. Tickets: $23 in advance The Other Side – 7 PM Alternative Electronic Music featuring works by: Ann Rhodes (solo voice and electronics using loops and soundscapes) Brandon Battles (ambient patches, heavy drone, and even dance orient studio productions) MONONIXON (modular synthesis and ambient jazz combined to relax the mind and calm the spirit) Tickets: $5 Unity Hall – 8 PM The Dust Devil Band One of Central New York’s classic good-time bands return to Unity Hall’s Ed Rosenburgh stage with their impressive musical talent and infectious sense of camaraderie. Opening act: Syracuse’s masterful female vocalist Syd Pinto accompanied by another CNY musical treasure, Paul Case. Tickets: $15 Thursday, October 24 Paris Hill Barn and Café – 7 PM Ann Carey and Matt Mielnick are Nook & Crannie This is the last of the weekly shows for the Paris Barn’s current season. Admission is Free Friday, October 25 Remsen Arts Center -- 7:30 PM D’Funk’D D’Funk’D is a nine-piece pop music band (five horns, rhythm section, and vocals) featuring music teachers from throughout Central New York.
