Dakine Cafe

Dakine Cafe, the sequel to the wildly popular shaved ice stand Dakine Grinds, is only a few months old and has already distinguished itself as a local restaurant staple. Located on Galveston in a beachy wood building, Dakine is the perfect place to go for smoothie bowls, avocado toast, or one of their signature espressos. The main drawback is the price, as most bowls cost around $11, but if you are willing to spend some extra cash, Dakine Cafe will give you a tropical treat you wont regret. Photo by H. Rogers

Pho Viet If interior aesthetic is what you look for in a restaurant, than Pho Viet is not for you. If you can get past the first impressions however, Pho Viet will give you the most authentic and delicious Vietnamese dining experience in Bend. Located on third street, Pho Viet offers a huge menu full of their different variations of pho. For about $10, you can get a full meal of the delicious noodles and broth. While the whole menu is exceptional, the Pho Ga, a traditional broth with chicken, is a classic meal that will please all. Photo by H. Rogers 4-Artist spotlight Grace Cooper

Pillars

I am a pillar Buckled in on myself To support you

I am strong And I allow you to lean on me And pull from my strength Until I can barely stand.

I am imperfect Yet when I allow myself To crumble at your feet You don’t piece me back together So lovingly Like I do to you.

I am human And you stare at my injuries With disgust in your eyes For how could I be so weak?

I am flawed But I’m supposed to be so strong, aren’t I? A symbol of perfection Made for you alone.

I am trying Even though my human side disgusts you And you would much prefer me A goddess.

I am not simply created for beauty and support Here only to solve your problems And lessen the blows of your life.

I am refusing To let the world tell me That I cannot be real.

For decades, independent film has shown that it deserves a great deal of respect as a genre, with classics like “A Clockwork Orange,” “Jackie Brown” and “Napoleon Dynamite.” Recently, the genre has captivated audiences, boasting box office hits such as “Get Out” and “Call me by Your Name.” Indie films have a unique quality of being free to take risks unlike films made by larger studios. The recent spark in the genre began with the production of the 2016 movie of the year “Moonlight.” The movie follows the life of an African American boy living in a dangerous town as he is forced to fight, sell drugs and battle his own demons regarding sexual orientation just to make it out of his own devastating circumstances. The movie was made with a very limited budget and a rather lackluster cast, yet it still captivates the minds of all audiences by creating a story the public can get behind. “I really liked ‘Moonlight’ because the story isn’t just of one boy it is the story of hundreds and thousands of boys and girls growing up in projects, but by putting it right in the of millions it could actually generate some change,” junior Carly Clarke said. Another independent film that dominated box office sales records was “Get Out.” Regardless of the genre one prefers, indie movies seem to make everyone think. Whether that thought is about one’s role in society, future potential or how to escape from racist in-laws, independent movies trigger something in everyone. It is no doubt that there are a lot of exciting things coming in the future from this genre and it will be interesting to observe as more indie movies earn places at the top of the box office. A description of “Get Out” is probably unnecessary considering it generated upwards of 170 million dollars, according to the Box Office Yearly Report. If you haven’t seen the movie, it is horrible, in the best sense of the word horrible. This film documents a trip that an African American man makes to his girlfriend’s parents house in what seems to be a pleasant plot line; however, when the couple arrive at the house things start to get very strange. “I really liked ‘Get Out’ because the concept of racism is already a very scary one, and what the filmmakers did here seemed so obvious that I was surprised to learn no one had done it already,” freshman Stephen Herzig said. Both “Get Out” and “Moonlight” received critical acclaim in part because they are powerful commentaries on race, tolerance and human rights. A more recent hit independent film was “Lady Bird;” this is interesting because the topics of discussion within this movie are vastly different from the previous two. “Lady Bird” depicts the life of a very outspoken high school girl and deals with her familial relationships and social life in high school. The movie makes a slight commentary on the pressures of living the life of a young adult and displays the battles fought with one’s own family as a young adult. “‘Lady Bird’ was great just because it follows the life of someone in my exact situation just experiencing completely different things. I wouldn’t call the story line unrealistic it’s just different from most high schoolers lives. In a way the movie is comforting and easy to watch,” Photos courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons junior Tatum Elshire said. Review-9 Aiden Haley Guest Writer

The term “raw” is grossly overused. It has been adopted as a slang term for things that are rebellious or “meta.” It has been used to describe pretty much anything that does not parallel the word’s definition. And if I hear it paired with “diet” or “juice cleanse” one more time (or the politically correct, white-girl term: “lifestyle change”), I think I may start screaming; however, I cannot apologize for its use in this context; The Florida Project is uncaged, unfiltered, and utterly raw. Set in an unkempt roadside-town just outside of Disney World, “The Florida Project” documents summer vacation in the endless imaginations of children. But these children do not have the overindulgent, middle-to-upper class breaks from school that pollute so many movies; their experiences are distinguishable because of where they live and who they are raised by. The Florida Project There is Moonee (), an extroverted six-year-old living with her misguided and struggling 22-year-old single mom in The An Adult World Through a Child’s Eye Magical Castle (a small, purple motel riddled with cigarette butts and misplaced bicycles). There is the seven-year-old boy, Scooty (Christopher Rivera), who lives in the motel room directly below Moonee, with his mother constantly working to make ends meet. And there is Moonee’s best friend, Jancey (Valeria Cotto), who lives with her grandmother in the equally tattered neighboring motel in a room full of destroyed, off-brand toys. The director and writer of the film, , manages to make the audience feel as and trusting as these characters.
