CONFESSIONS OF A BLACK FEMALE RAPPER: AN AUTOETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY ON NAVIGATING SELFHOOD AND THE MUSIC INDUSTRY by CHINWE MAPONYA-COOK Under the DireCtion of Jonathan Gayles, PhD ABSTRACT The following research explores the ways in whiCh a BlaCk female rapper navigates her selfhood and traditional expeCtations of the musiC industry. By examining four overarching themes in the literature review - Hip-Hop, raCe, gender and agency - the author used observations of prominent BlaCk female rappers spanning over five deCades, as well as personal experiences, to detail an autoethnographiC aCCount of self-development alongside pursuing a musiC career. MethodologiCally, the author wrote journal entries to detail her experiences, as well as wrote and performed an aCCompanying original mixtape entitled The Thesis (available on all streaming platforms), as a creative addition to the research. -

It’s Not Me, It’s You: Considering the Worthy Sacrifice Hip Hop Artists May Need to Make to Reclaim the Heart of Hip Hop, its People by Sharieka Shontae Botex April, 2019 Director of Thesis: Dr. Wendy Sharer Major Department: English The origins of Hip Hop evidence that the art form was intended to provide more than music to listen to, but instead offer art that delivers messages on behalf of people who were not always listened to. My thesis offers an analysis of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content and adds to an ongoing discussion of the potential Hip Hop artists have to be effective leaders for the Black community, whose lyrical content can be used to make positive change in society, and how this ability at times can be compromised by creating content that doesn’t evidence this potential or undermines it. Along with this, my work highlights how some of Jay-Z and J. Cole’s lyrical content exhibits their use of some rhetorical strategies and techniques used in social movements and their use of some African American rhetorical practices and strategies. In addition to this, I acknowledge and discuss points in scholarship that connect with my discussion of their lyrical content, or that aided me in proposing what they could consider for future lyrical content. I analyzed six Jay-Z songs and six J. Cole songs, including one song from their earliest released studio album and one from their most recently released studio album. I examined their lyrical content to document responses to the following questions: What issues and topics are discussed in the lyrics; Is money referenced? If so, how; Is there a message of uplift or unity?; What does the artist speak out against?; What lifestyles and habits are promoted?; What guidance is provided?; What problems are mentioned? and What solutions are offered? He released “Spiritual” after the extrajudicial killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Jay is featured on the remix of “All the Way Up” and teamed up with DJ Khaled and Future to create “I Got the Keys.” Back in April, Mr. Carter made a cameo on his wife’s Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade as a family man. The last time we saw the lyricist in full rap mode (e.g. album, singles and tour) was for Magna Carta Holy Grail in 2013. The promotional On The Run trailer for the married couple’s tour stars Jay-Z and Beyoncé as bank robbers à la Bonnie and Clyde, and features all kinds of guns, ski masks, shady figures, cop chases and a line-up. In 2014, I started to think about Jay’s past criminal life as a drug dealer, and his references to it on his records. I let the thing between my eyes analyze Jay’s skills, then put it down—type Braille...you feel me? Last month, the rapper narrated the New York Times Op-Ed: “The War on Drugs Is an Epic Fail.” I went back to my study of Jay-Z and his lyrics with a more critical eye. -

Anybody that doubts the impact of music in popular culture needs SVP Entertainment to look no further than a review of 2013. Beyoncé bookended the year - first with her performance during the half-time show at the Super Bowl (joined by her former Destiny’s General Manager, Music Child bandmates) and closing the year with her “surprise” audio/video release, which has Nielsen already become one of the ten best selling digital albums of all time with over a million digital albums sold in just three weeks. In between, music fans were treated to a year of creative release events by such artists as Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga and Daft Punk. In addition to the great awards shows and celebrations, such as the Billboard Music Awards and the Grammy Awards, we were also brought the first YouTube Music Awards, celebrating the consumer’s favorite video streams of the year – this amid continued growth in all forms of music streaming. With year-over-year growth of 32% in streaming consumption (to over 118 billion streams) and with Nielsen consumer research showing that 68% of U.S. consumers reporting streaming music in the past year, we are seeing a surge in music consumption. As is always the case with the music industry, technology is an ever-changing driver of how music is consumed, and today’s consumer has more access to music than ever before - from their connected devices to the all-access models that digital presents. -

Many individuals have provided assistance that helped an incredible amount during the process of writing and researching for this thesis. Firstly, I am truly indebted to my advisor, Macklin Smith. This thesis would not be nearly as thorough in rap’s historical background or in hip hop poetics without his intelligent ideas. His helpfulness with drafts, inclusion of his own work in e-mails, and willingness to meet over coffee not only deepened my understanding of my own topic, but also made me excited to write and research hip hop poetics. Public display of music rights are the licenses an individual or business needs to play music for a group of people larger than your immediate family either inside your home or in public. As an aspiring entrepreneur myself, I attempted to take a product to market using public display of music rights and encountered significant challenges. Through my startup journey I documented my team’s struggles. Then I compared our struggles with those of others who have attempted to innovate in the music industry using public display of music rights. I found four significant challenges. Towards an African-American Genealogy of Market and Religion in Rap Music
POPULAR MUSIC AND SOCIETY, 2018 https://doi.org/10.1080/03007766.2018.1458275 Towards an African-American Genealogy of Market and Religion in Rap Music Kevin Pyon The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, USA ABSTRACT This essay provides a new reading of the intersections between religion and rap music in its genealogical consideration of how black laborers’ orientations to the market—from the antebellum slave market to the contemporary music industry—have informed their consequent commodifications of race and religion. The essay (1) traces the informal economy and sacred world of the slaves to the twinned births of the modern black prosperity gospel and hip-hop culture and (2) connects the religio-economic modalities of postbellum peddling and celebrity preachers to contemporary black prosperity preachers and hip-hop moguls. Finally, this essay concludes that the commodified formulations of race and religion in rap music represent transformations of spiritual and market categories of “authenticity” and “freedom” which have structured and sometimes limited our understandings of distinct articulations of race, religion, and the market throughout African-American history. Articulations of Race, Religion, and the Market This essay situates hip-hop music within a lineage of black laborers who have both nego- tiated with and disrupted the market’s commodification of them through various means: the medium of the market itself, their religious belief and practices, and—oftentimes—a paradoxical combination of both.1 It argues that the
