Serbian Orthodox Church in the USA Church Assembly—Sabor 800 Years of Autocephaly of the Serbian Orthodox Church: “Endowed by God, Treasured by the People” August 1, 2019 Holy Despot Stephen the Tall and Venerable Eugenia (Lazarevich) LIBERTYVILLE STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDENTS OF THE CHURCH ASSEMBLY-SABOR REGARDING THE CONSTITUTION AND RELATED GOVERNING DOCUMENTS To the Very Reverend and Reverend Priests and Deacons, Venerable Monastics, the Members and Parishioners of the Church-School Congregations and Mission Parishes of the Serbian Orthodox Dioceses in the United States of America Beloved Clerics, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As we have received numerous questions and concerns regarding the updated combined version of the current Constitution, General Rules and Regulations and Uniform Rules and Regulations for Parishes and Church School Congregations of the Serbian Orthodox Dioceses in the United States of America, that was published and distributed to all attendees and received by such on July 16, 2019 during the 22nd Church Assembly-Sabor, we deemed it necessary and appropriate to provide answers to our broader community regarding what was updated and why. The newly printed white bound edition is a compilation of all three prior documents, inclusive of past amendments and updated decisions rendered by previous Church Assemblies and the Holy Assembly of Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church. This was done in accordance with the May 7/24, 2018, HAB No. 45/MIN.171 decision of the Holy Assembly of Bishops of our Mother Church, the Serbian Orthodox Church, to whom we are and shall forever remain faithful. The Beginnings of the Romanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church

Professor PhD., University of Piteşti, Faculty of Theology, Letters, History and Arts/ Centre for Applied Theological Studies, ROMANIA, [email protected] Abstract The acknowledgment of autocephaly represents a historical moment for the Romanian Orthodox Church, it means full freedom in organizing and administering internal affairs, without any interference or control of any church authority from outside. This church act did not remove the Romanian Orthodox Church from the unity of ecumenical Orthodoxy, but, on the contrary, was such as to preserve and ensure good relations with the Ecumenical Patriarchate and all other Sister Orthodox Churches, and promote a dogmatic, cult, canonical and work unity. The Orthodox Church in the Romanian territories, organized by the foundation of the Metropolis of Ungro-Wallachia (1359) and the Metropolis of Moldavia and Suceava (1401), became one of the fundamental institutions of the state, supporting the strengthening of the ruling power, to which it conferred spiritual legitimacy. The action of formal recognition of autocephaly culminated in the Ad Hoc Divan Assembly’s 1857 vote of desiderata calling for “recognition of the independence of the Eastern Orthodox Church, from the United Principalities, of any Diocesan Bishop, but maintaining unity of faith with the Ecumenical Church of the East with regard to the dogmas”. The efforts of the Romanian Orthodox Church for autocephaly were long and difficult, knowing a new stage after the Unification of the Principalities in 1859 and the unification of their state life (1862), which made it necessary to organize the National Church. -

In the Serbian capital Belgrade and in the southern city of Nis, mobs set two mosques on fire despite the pleas of the Serbian Orthodox Church. In Belgrade, Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral personally pleaded with the mob and urged police and firefighters to react and preserve "what could be preserved". After initial hesitation for fear of the mob, firefighters and police did intervene, so the Belgrade mosque, which is "under state protection", was saved from complete destruction. In Kosovo since 1999, many attacks have been made on Orthodox shrines, without UNMIK, KFOR, or the mainly ethnically Albanian Kosovo Protection Service making any arrests of attackers. Some of the Serbian Orthodox Church's most revered shrines have been burnt amid the upsurge of inter-ethnic violence that erupted in Kosovo on 17 March, leaving at least 22 people dead and several hundred wounded. -

As a young boy, Rastko left home to join the Orthodox monastic colony on Mount Athos and was given the name Sava. In 1197 his father, King Stefan Nemanja, joined him. In 1198 they moved to and restored the abandoned monastery Hilandar, which was at that time the center of Serbian Orthodox monastic life. St. Sava's father took the monastic vows under the name Simeon, and died in Hilandar on February 13, 1200. He is also canonized a saint of the Church. After his father's death, Sava retreated to an ascetic monastery in Kareya which he built himself in 1199. He also wrote the Kareya typicon both for Hilandar and for the monastery of ascetism. The last typicon is inscribed into the marble board at the ascetic monastery, which today also exists there. He stayed on Athos until the end of 1207, when he persuaded the Patriarch of Constantinople to elevate him to the position of first Serbian archbishop, thereby establishing the independence of the archbishopric of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the year 1219. Saint Sava is celebrated as the founder of the independent Serbian Orthodox Church and as the patron saint of education and medicine among Serbs. -

GEORGIAN THEOLOGISTS ON THE INTITUTION OF MARRIAGE Among the religious functions social is one of the most important one. Religion actually influences the society, persons’ consolidations and individuals by means of belief, religious feelings and cult activities. Confessions, of course differ from each-other according to their aims and the means of implementation though each of them accomplish their specific social destination functions. Emil Durkheim points out that religion depicts not only the society structure but it supports to make it stable, religion has a uniting function as it concentrates men’s attention and inspires them with hope1. In traditional minor cultures, Durkheim proves, all the sides of life are precisely described by the religion. On the one part religious habits create new ideas and thinking categories, on the other part make the already established valuables steady. Religion is not only consecutive feelings and activities but it actually defines the rule of thinking of a man in traditional cultures2. As Michel Mill points out in spite of in what way the religious dimension will be displayed in social life we must always remember that the decrease of the religion political role do not at all mean an eradication of religious personal belief or social functions. Religious belief does not recently define functioning rules of states though it plays a vast role not only in personal but also in social lives. Very often theories of secularization meticulously define the place of religion in the present society and identify the weakening of traditional institution with the end of religion3. -

Table of Contents Archbishop Jovan sentenced to 3 years in prison, all Church property confiscated, 18 others sentenced Questionable involvement of the state in the internal conflict of Macedonian Orthodoxy Archbishop Jovan sentenced to 3 years in prison, all Church property confiscated, 18 others sentenced Center 9 (02.07. 2013) - On 2 July 2013, the First Municipal Court of Skopje, Macedonia, under the leadership of Judge Ivica Stefanovski, sentenced the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) Archbishop of Ohrid and Metropoletan of Skopje Jovan (Vraniskovski) to three years in prison. The judge also ordered that all property of the Archbishopric of Ohird is to be confiscated. Bishops Marko of Bregalnica and David of Stobi and additional 14 priests, monks and nuns were all sentenced to two years and then suspended to five years of probation. Among sentenced are Archbishops mother and sister as well. All convicts were sentenced in the case initiated by the Macedonian Orthodox Church (MOC) that is not canonically recognized by any canonical Orthodox Church in the world, and of which all the accused were not members. The MOC does not have a status of the state church in Macedonia, however, de faccto extols all the power as if would be. The Archbishop Jovan was arrested on 12 December 2011 and since then was held in Suto Orizari prison, among the criminals and other serious law offenders. In May 2012 Macedonian police has arrested monks, nuns and believers: This is the sixth imprisonment of Archbishop Jovan in the last 10 years. At its annual conference in May 2013, all the Bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church issued an appeal to all democratic institutions in the country and internationally to help release Archbishop Jovan who is in prison under torture, as stated in a release by Bishop Irinej, the SOC port-parole officer. -

We, the clergy, monastics, and representatives of the people of God, ordained and elected members to the Annual Assembly of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of Eastern America, of the Serbian Orthodox Church, have gathered together at the Church of Saint Sava of Serbia in the God-protected City of Saint Petersburg, Florida on February 27 and 28, in the Year of Our Lord 2020. Today, as we celebrate the memory of Saint Onesimus, Apostle of the Seventy, and Venerable Paphnutius the Recluse of the Kiev Caves, the Holy Spirit has gathered us in the community of the Body of Christ that He might bring us closer to our Heavenly Father. Having announced the fullness of God’s Church, gathered around our Bishop, Father and Archpastor Irinej, we greet the fullness of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the person of His Holiness, the Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade-Karlovac, and Serbian Patriarch Irinej and his Delegation. We also greet the members of the Episcopal Council of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North, Central and South America, as well as the members of the Central Church Council of the Serbian Orthodox Dioceses in the United States of America, Canada, and Central and South America. From this place we greet His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Alexander, Heir to the Throne, and his wife, Her Royal Highness Princess Katherine. [email protected] Abstract: The non-elimination of the consequences of occupation in some parts of Yugoslavia in World War II, as well as preventing and obstructing from the Yugoslav state the elimination of the con- sequences of the war suffering of the Serbian Orthodox Church, will prevent and disable the Church in certain parts of its canonical territory and endanger, destroy and confiscate its property. This will then lead to a new suffering of the Serbian people, while putting the legal successor state of Yugoslavia to additional temptations. Non-return of property to the Serbian Church will be especially in favor of secessionist forces that threaten the territorial integrity of Serbia. After taking power in the country - by conducting a revolution while waging a war for liberation from occupation - Yugoslavia’s new governing nomenclature, legitimized as such during the Second World War, was not content with establishing a state order, only on the basis of a single, exclusive ideology, but it penetrated the civilizational frameworks of state jurisdiction and went about creating the whole social order. -
The Serbian Orthodox Church and the New Serbian Identity
Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia THE SERBIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH AND THE NEW SERBIAN IDENTITY Belgrade, 2006 This Study is a part of a larger Project "Religion and Society," realized with the assistance of the Heinrich Böll Foundation Historical Confusion At the turn of the penultimate decade of the 20th century to the last, the world was shocked by the (out-of-court) pronouncement of the death verdict for an artist, that is, an author by the leader of a theocratic regime, on the grounds that his book insulted one religion or, to be more exact, Islam and all Muslims. Naturally, it is the question of the famous Rushdie affair. According to the leader of the Iranian revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini, the novel “Satanic Verses” by Salman Rushdie was blasphemous and the author deserved to be sentenced to death by a fatwa. This case - which has not been closed to this day - demonstrated in a radical way the seriousness and complexity of the challenge which is posed by the living political force of religious fundamentalism(s) to the global aspirations of the concept of liberal capitalist democracy, whose basic postulates are a secular state and secular society. The fall of the Berlin Wall that same year (1989) marked symbolically the end of an era in the international relations and the collapse of an ideological- political project. In other words, the circumstances that had a decisive influence on the formation of the Yugoslav and Serbian society in the post- World War II period were pushed into history. Time has told that the mentioned changes caused a tragic historical confusion in Yugoslavia and in Serbia, primarily due to the unreadiness of the Yugoslav and, in particular, Serbian elites to understand and adequately respond to the challenges of the new era.
