Mots-clés : jeu vidéo, héroïne d’action, féminisme, Lara Croft, regard masculin, protagoniste féminin. i Abstract This master thesis focuses on the action heroine trope in video games.

Press Start Aya of the Beholder Aya of the Beholder: An Examination of the Construction of Real-World Locations in Parasite Eve Chris Alton York University Abstract The ways in which virtual environments are constructed and perceived is rarely a direct one-to-one experience. Using the foundational example of Square’s Parasite Eve (1997), I examine the ways in which real-world locations and approximations of such are represented within video game worlds. I examine the methods through which video games can create spaces which evoke the conceptual idea of a given place, both through audio/visual and interactive means, without constructing a one-to-one simulacrum of the location. Thus, the player actively contributes in the transformation of an actionable virtual space into an actualized lived place. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, my discussion draws on cinematic semiotic theory, by way of Christian Metz, in association with Wittgenstein’s examination of language as a foundation from which to proceed. These concepts are then incorporated into a broader discussion of theories more focused on video game studies, such as Laurie Taylor’s Lacanian approach to the video game avatar and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of flow, to illustrate how video game locations may leave out large portions of their real-world referents and yet still be identified as said referents by the player. The choices for what to include/exclude are also examined from a socio-political perspective, allowing reflection on what is considered necessary for a representation of a real-world place. • Opera Scenes in Video Games
Opera Scenes in Video Games: Hitmen, Divas and Wagner’s Werewolves Tim Summers Abstract This article aims to illuminate the meanings and aesthetic effects generated by scenes of staged opera in video games. It also explores the images of opera transmitted to the huge audiences that games address. Three dimensions of the opera-game encounter are discussed. First, Tosca in Hitman: Blood Money and The Beggar’s Opera in Assassin’s Creed III are used to examine the treatment of violence and the discourse of popular appeal in games and opera. Secondly, the arias sung by women in Final Fantasy VI and Parasite Eve illustrate how a melodramatic mode of expression represents a confluence of the aesthetic priorities of the two media. Finally, The Beast Within’s meditation on Wagner reveals how opera sequences aim to engage players by conjuring phantasmagorias through a unifying and enrapturing spectacle. I am fortunate enough to have made many trips to the opera. I have been ‘at the opera’ in concert halls, opera houses, amphitheatres and at the cinema. I have witnessed opera through radio, CD, television and the internet. And I have even been to the opera in video games. In these latter visits, the action on the stage and my own agency sometimes seem to blur together and conflate: I have assassinated in Tosca, committed crimes in The Beggar’s Opera, and undergone transfiguration in a music drama by Wagner. These operas occur in a different mode of reality to my day-to-day life, but nevertheless serve as experiences that are part of my holistic musical and cultural existence.
